Well, the 97 releases were theatrical…
I found some 1997 dts mixes on myspleen that were edited to be GOUT synced. Very nice
I prefer the 1997 over the 2004/2011 Editions. I had already seen the 3 Star Wars movies back in the 80’s on VHS & TV as I was too young to see any of them on the Big Screen. However, when I found out they were being Re-Re-released on the Big Screen in 1997, I had to see them, no matter what.
I felt happy, knowing that I watched a version of the OT on the Big Screen.
Heck, if I had a time machine, I would use it to see them when they were all originally released.

I’d say '04, but that’s when the lightsabers kind of just melted into each other, right?
I know it was corrected for the BD release, but I can’t remember if '97 had the same issue.
The 1997 releases looked good on the big screen, changes aside. Had Lucas simply remastered them and put them back in theaters- they would have done equally well. I still remember how the sound system shook when the first Star Destroyer went across the screen in Star Wars. For that reason alone, I don’t hate the '97 version with the same intensity as I do the 04 and 11 desecrations.
It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher
I prefer 97, no doubt about that. 97 is a proper special edition, while 04 and 11 were just an excuse to insert PT crap into OT.
真実
while 04 and 11 were just an excuse to insert PT crap into OT.
I’d argue the same is true for 97, albeit to a lesser extent.

What PT stuff is in the 97 edition?

I think he’s referring to showing Coruscant at the end of ROTJ but since it pre-dates the PT it technically wouldn’t qualify as a PT reference unless there’s some George Lucas quote SE time that mentions that this unseen planet from the OUT would in fact be seen in the PT.
So, one quick shot throughout three movies? That barely registers even if you count it.

Hey you’d be amazed.

Is the PT stuff in 04 and 11 really that much more, though? The SE was crap from the start.

“Wesa Free!!!”
I rest my case.
Honestly I never even noticed that until I heard about it on this site.

No. Nooooooooooooo!
Oh, wait…
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

I don’t really consider that a PT thing. It’s just the same word. The situation and intonation are completely different.

Yeah but now you can’t unhear it and it counts. Oh man, does it ever count.

I disagree. Noooooooooooo is an ROTS abomination that was carried into the SE, and it’s similar enough to count.

Try to think of any other fathomable reason to add that, except that Vader said it exactly the same way in Sith. And you’re right, it is a completely different situation, which is part of what makes it extra stupid.

The word is said in plenty of the other movies. The way he says it is a lot more similar to Luke in ESB. It’s a shit change for sure but in my mind it’s like saying Lucas made the Ewoks blink because Gungans blink (which, like the “no” might be true, but I don’t think there’s enough of a connection to call it a PT change).
But then WHY did he make the change. Most of the changes are stupid, yes, but there is a discernible question to the answer why for most of them, at least when viewed through the GL outlook.

I have a hard time rationalizing most of his changes.
Let me put the “no” this way. If all the “alert my stardestroyer” crap had been added after 97, people here would call it a PT change because the PT has a bunch of unnecessary ships leaving and landing shots. But it isn’t really a PT change, is it? It might be coming from the same place in Lucas’s head but that doesn’t mean causation.

I don’t think that’s the same situation.
