Nope, if it was up to me, that would have been off youtube a long time ago.
It’s my film and I can do whatever I want with it. I’m sorry if you fell in love with an earlier version of this, but the longer one is my final vision 😄

Oh groan! That’s classic! 😃

Perhaps the lower resolution copy I have will one day be a collector’s item.

But that probably won’t happen until USB drives are obsolete. 😉

But seriously though, I don’t know if I have it in better quality than it is on youtube, but if someone downloaded it off of youtube and shared the link, I have no problem with it. 😃

Yeah, I’ve already got it from YouTube. So I’m all good. Thanks!

Is the despecialised edition fair use?

Not strictly… Lucasfilm (and all related companies) doubtlessly knows about it and has not taken any measures against it, they’ve been pretty lenient toward many kinds of fan productions, but no it is not exactly legal, though it isn’t competing directly with anything they’re actually selling (which is the whole reason this exists, because they WON’T sell the theatrical versions) and we take a very firm stance that anyone who gets the Despecialized Editions should own the commercially available sources used here (the Star Wars Blu-rays) so as to further distance ourselves from lost sales on Lucasfilm’s part. But in the end, justify it as we will, there is no safe provision this is operating under, just Lucasfilm probably not wanting to piss off their fanbase any more than they already have.

Also, as I understand it, as long as it is a restoration it is also slightly more distanced from just a copy. As long as no money ever changes hands and people on the original sources I can see no action being taken.

I’m pretty sure that they made clear to Verta years ago that if he ever distributed his then he’d be in huge trouble. I think it’s because, as great as DE is, it isn’t on the level of a professional studio blu ray release, whereas Mike Verta’s is.

EDIT: Then again, whenever Verta said that it was years ago, and Despecialized wasn’t as widely known or as seamless in quality.

If they wanted to sue Harmy, they could do it. But as he does not make any money from his releases and requests users to buy the official releases, they can’t claim he’s stealing their money. So if they decided to sue him, they would just make the fans angry, which is a horrible business decision, and as we see Lucasfilm under Disney’s ownership tries to please the fans of the original trilogy as much as possible.

TL:DR - these releases are definitely copyright infringement (at least according to US laws), but they have no reason to interfere. Don’t give them the reason please 😃

So long as he gives it away it is not copy right infringement

Actually, it still is, but some companies will look the other way if it’s not commercial piracy.

I downloaded the avchd version from the uloz links, from teh paradox, this time the iso file shows up, but the file size shows up as 8.48gb, not 7.9gb. All of the information from the page I downloaded it from stated that all three would be 7.9gb, but this was not the case.

I haven’t tried to burn these unto DVD DL’s yet as I’m waiting for them to arrive, but won’t this be a problem?

I’m using an iMac running yosemite, if that may have something to do with it?

Would appreciate any insight.

8480000000 / 1024 / 1024 /1024 = 7.8976… GB

edit: So, the insight is, anyone authoring an OS that doesn’t use power-of-2 units on machines that operate by power-of-2 is a fool.

Not a nice thing to say, and not very insightful either.

Heh, it’s not an insult to anyone except the people that wrote that code in OSX. And they deserve to be insulted for it. AFAIK, every single OS before it on any platform used/uses power-of-2 for their memory and storage counts. Which makes perfect sense, because they are all digital machines, inherently using power-of-2 math for absolutely everything. Changing to power-of-10 for your storage counts “just to be different” is very dumb, and they should be chastised for it. Unless you’re responsible for writing that code the remark shouldn’t affect you at all. If you are responsible for writing that code, well, you deserve a slap.

Also, it’s helpful enough because it answers the question about the discrepancy and confirms that there’s no problem with the file. As for the OS authors he insults, I’m sure they’ll manage to get a full night’s rest before long.

so the OS is responsible for the file size discrepancy.

But will this mean that an 8gb dvd dl will appear to be 8.5gb on my os then? Or am I pretty much stuck unless I copy the files to my external hard drive then burn it at a friends house?

Blank dual layer DVDs hold 7.96 GB. It should fit just fine.
