But to answer the question more specifically, I think the only dubs added would be incomplete dubs for Hindi and Tamil, and the Slovak dub has also been improved. There’s also an incomplete Turkish dub I haven’t released yet because all I need is one stupid little bit of audio and then it will be complete. Argh. Incomplete dubs, BTW, are because the source material comes from torrents that apparently weren’t very carefully edited and were missing chunks. I’ve got someone checking a Turkish Star Wars fan forum for me, fingers crossed.

As for descriptive audio–check the relevant thread. I’ve written the scripts using the Special Edition descriptive tracks as a reference and all I need is voice talent for the voiceover. Please tell me one of you is Cate Blanchett. Then I just splice and dice and we’ve got descriptive audio tracks. The descriptive track for Star Wars needs work, so it’d be included in the package.

I’m not interested in “despecializing” the SE descriptive tracks because the voiceover makes despecialization even trickier, and the quality is so poor that even if I pulled it off, it wouldn’t sound very good. Part of the joy of Star Wars is the impressive score, and it would be particularly galling not to let that shine through on a track for the blind.

Question! In The Return of the Jedi DE, is the “Slavac Dub” the same language
as the “Slovenščina - Slovenian” Subs, or are they different Slavic dialects?

Heh, Slovenian and Slovak are different (but related) languages, language code slv and slk respectively. The difference between dialects and languages is always a fuzzy area and often has a little politics mixed in for spice.

Slavic languages have varying degrees of mutual intelligibility, and I don’t particularly care to delve into what qualifies as a distinct language versus a dialect. If it gets a different language code, I call it another language. Besides, writing systems throw a whole different spanner into the mix–Serbian and Croatian are the same language when spoken, but Croatian is written exclusively in Latin characters, while Serbian can use Cyrillic or Latin. Same with Urdu and Hindi–they’re mutually intelligible dialects when spoken, but they use totally different alphabets when written and are indecipherable to each other. So what’s the same language for a dub may be two different languages for subtitles!

In more practical news, I have been trying to rope pittrek into making me some Slovak subtitles. No luck yet.

That’s exactly why I asked! I’ve got a Slovac Dub here and a Slovenian Sub!
Wondered if they were the same. I imagine someone who could read the sub
may also understand the dub! LOL Even though they are different.

Edit: Had to add this! I just watched a bit of ROTJ with the ‘Tamil’ Dub,
only the “Vader arrives” part. Damn, they got a creepy guy to do Vaders
voice! I thought the lip syncing by the Commander looked real good too!

FWIW, Czech subs are a much better match for the Slovak dub than Slovenian, if you have to choose a mismatched language with hopes of intelligibility.

Regarding other dubs, the official Hong Kong DVDs and Blu-rays definitely don’t have a Cantonese dub (we have them; they don’t), I think Blu-ray.com just has some bad data on the Blu. There may very well be a Cantonese dub for television (lots of languages have these, not just Tagalog), and knowing how common bootlegs are over there, there may be a very official-looking DVD with the Cantonese dub that you can buy in Hong Kong, just not the kind you can buy in regular stores in the US. If you find that or the Tagalog dub, I’d love to hear them. I don’t care much if they’re well-done, they’re for accessibility–some of our other dubs are… interesting… too. If there’s one person out there who doesn’t know English very well, but knows Tagalog, that’s enough reason to have it.

I checked, the “bad info” about the Hong Kong Blu-ray having Cantonese-dubbed versions is actually true from a certain point of view.

The set includes the Prequel Trilogy alongside the Original Trilogy but only the prequels have Cantonese dubs.

Move along. We’re not discussing the Prequel Trilogy translations here.

If you’re already watching with the Tamil dub, go ahead and watch a bit more. It is by far the weirdest dub I’ve found. In particular, the “heavy breathing” by any character who’s onscreen not saying anything, and the fact that some of the Ewok lines are dubbed… either in Tamil or in a nonsense language by Tamil voice actors, I can’t tell which. Also watch Empire for snatches of English phrases spoken by the Tamil speakers, such as Luke telling R2 to shut up, or Han telling Luke “I hate you” after Leia kisses Luke. Seriously, it’s wild. I wish we had the whole thing.

I’ll PM you with a link to the latest files in case there’s a difference between them and what you saw (I don’t think there is, but just to be sure). You can then PM me back with a link to the updated files, or if it’s just a few lines, just send the corrections. The Dutch subs are direct from the GOUT, which generally have been decent but not without problems.

The filenames for the Dutch subs are: SW-nld-full.sup, ESB-nld-full.sup, and ROTJ-nld-full.sup. They can be found in the SUP-720p or SUP-1080p folders.

EDIT: Many preservations including the Despecialized Editions only include the SRT portion of Project Threepio. If you want BD-SUP, you can download the whole project, typically from the same places you got Despecialized.

At some point, SSE became GOUT-synced, and versions from that point will work without changes. For versions prior to the GOUT-sync, you’ll need to use the special resync scripts that come with Project Threepio–it’s covered in the README. I honestly forget if 1.6 is GOUT-synced or not, but I think it is. Oh, and PM sent.

There’s a pretty detailed README file included with the project files. That part would be covered in the “Project Threepio’s file naming convention” section.

SW-eng-native.sup: A set of subtitles that cover what most people would want.
SW-eng-sdh-native.sup: A set of subtitles that include SDH (deaf & hard of hearing) audio cues.
SW-eng-alien-35mm.sup: Greedo’s subtitles, for use with preservations that don’t have burnt-in Greedo subs.
SW-eng-match-35mm.sup: A set of subtitles for the rest of the film, designed to look like Greedo’s subs (similar font & style).

SW means Star Wars, ESB means Empire, ROTJ means Jedi. I’d recommend against using SRT files unless you have no other option.

So, in short, -eng-native is probably what you’re looking for, unless you want SDH cues.
