The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.

H.P. Lovecraft, “The Call of Cthulhu”

What people don’t seem to recognize is that ‘reality’ doesn’t necessarily map onto the findings of science. This is not to say that the universe as described through scientific principles is not factual - it usually is. However, it is incomplete. It is my belief that there is more than this universe, and people can and do travel into these realms. For some people, reality includes not just the screaming abyss, the horrible nightmare, and the demiurgic machine, but places of spiritual rest, vivid attainment, and absolute oneness. The modern laser focus on scientific materialism distorts the reality of normal people into accepting a form of frightening powerlessness, and most of those who escape this do so by rejecting science. The answer lies in allowing physics to be but one aspect of an infinitely greater metaphysics.
