So why is it a direct prequel to episode IV if it’s a spin-off ? Aren’t spin-off supposed to tell other stories ?

With a spinoff that relates to the saga they can test the waters of reception without going way out and taking a massive risk like with some Tales of the Jedi “4000 years before ANH” shit. Plus it’s a cool story.

Do you know a better word for “this is a movie that takes place between these other movies, which already have consecutive numbers, and which’s main characters are unrelated to the main characters of these other movies, however, you should still watch these other movies to fully understand this one”? If so, let me know, so we can see if that word is better than “spin-off” or “stand-alone”.

Frank, it’s a prequel. Disney just doesn’t want to call it a prequel for obvious reasons.

It’s definitely not a stand-alone film just because they didn’t stamp an episode number on it. It could have been a stand-alone film; arguably, it should have been.

Should it be called a prequel? Maybe. Is it possible to call it a prequel in the context of the Star Wars franchise? No.
Also, I think spin-off is a much better descriptor for it than stand-alone. Has either of these terms been used officially?

I would say that Standalone is acceptable.

I’ve seen Star Wars so I can’t say as how it stands up alone as a film or not, but I’d argue that major elements of Star Wars are so ingrained in the societal conscience that even people who don’t know Star Wars would get the idea.

I’m fine with stand-alone, too, but if some people are really worried about the semantics of it, then calling it a spin-off should solve that problem.

Spinoff or Anthology seem reasonable enough to me. But I do remember it being referred to as a stand-alone film quite a bit, and when I took my gf who had never seen anything Star Wars, she had no clue what was going on.

Come on guys, every single topic is about arguing semantics here.

Has the original trilogy even ever played in China? Rogue One kind of requires you’ve seen the original film more so than TFA.

IIRC, the OT was shown like a couple of years ago for the first time. I remember seeing some YouTube video where the Chinese thought SW was boring when they interviewed them after seeing it.

I call it a side story (like “side quest” in RPGs). It’s a prologue to ANH (because “prequel” makes you think about Episodes I-II-III). It’s neither a standalone film, nor a standalone Star Wars film.

I saw the original theatrical release of the Old Trilogy on the big screen and I'm proud of it...
How did I accomplish that (considering my age) is my secret...

It’s an EU movie.

Exactly. And it is the very best of EU; otherwise most of EU (both Lucas and Disney era) is a sea of utter rubbish with few hidden gems.

So you are telling me that despite the plan of including two Asian characters the film didn’t fare that well in China?

Imagine Hollywood execs meeting, who suddenly look&sound like confused Nemoidians:
-But… this… is… impossibru!

It works as a stand-alone. My wife, who has never seen anything Star Wars, went with me the first night and had no problem understanding the story as it was presented. She’s aware that the 1977 film picks up where this one ends, but didn’t have any questions as to why they needed the plans. For the record; she had no idea Tarkin was CGI.

A little actual on-topic info.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4257&p=.htm

Currently holding the #1 spot for the weekend is Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which dropped 55.7% and finished with an estimated $21.97 million as its domestic cume climbs to $477.2 million, placing it just $9 million behind Finding Dory as it is soon to become the highest grossing release of 2016.

In addition to its domestic gross, Rogue One added another $56.6 million internationally this weekend from 57 markets bringing its overseas total to $437.1 million for a global cume of $914.4 million. This places Rogue One ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and The Secret Life of Pets making it the fifth largest worldwide release of 2016, giving Walt Disney Studios the top five global releases for 2016.

Of that international haul this weekend, Rogue One opened in its last international territory this weekend, China, where it brought in an estimated $31 million for the three-day, only 61% of Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ two-day opening weekend. Nevertheless it was the #1 film in China this weekend, pulling in an estimated 56% market share.

Holding onto the number one spot in a crowded holiday movie season for almost a month is an impressive feat these days.

Not if you’re a Star Wars movie.
