BOTH STAR WARS (1977) DESPECIALIZED 2.7 & SILVER SCREEN EDITION:

First off, and forgive me if this sounds rather hyperbolic, I want to say that watching both of these films on my Samsung Smart TV was nothing short of a spiritual experience! I was astonished and speechless by the brilliance of these editions and I am definitely looking forward to see Empire Strikes Back & Return of the Jedi in the same way.

That said, there is a small problem that I’m curious about: The scene when the Millennium Falcon was caught in the Death Star’s tractor beam and the confused Luke and Hans starts arguing about it, I noticed the scene’s volume decreased a little (it went back to normal when Obi-Wan tells Han about there being other alternatives). Now on the 2.7 edition, I turned it to English 2 on the Audio Language setting and noticed the scene was pretty normal with the sound (I also like to mention that when I turn it to English 3, I can actually hear the sound of the tractor beam whereas I can’t hear it in 1 and 2).

In the Silver Screen edition, which lacks the Audio Language setting, the same decreasing-volume problem arose in the same scene.

It’s not extremely bothersome, but it’s pretty weird. I mean, does anyone else have this problem? Is this something irreversible? What can I do?

There have been several different sound mixes for that film over the years, so, it is not a surprise that the sound levels for each element–music, dialogue, spaceship fxs, creature fxs, etc–would be different in balance for each sound mix.

As far as what you can do about it? You can replace the audio for that scene with the one you like, but you may have to do some research on your own. There are a few free audio editing softwares out there. Perhaps doing a personal project like this will help you learn how to use these softwares.

Is the Leia hologram new for 2.7? I no longer have the previous versions to compare. I’m seeing obvious tearing where the two sources are combined.

Nope.

Do you know how far back this version of the scene was used?

The Leia shots were pretty much all done for 2.0 as far as I know. 1.0 simply used the blu-ray footage. I didn’t upgrade any of them for 2.7. And in the first hologram scene, I didn’t end up changing anything at all, even color-wise. The color would have been changed in Obiwan’s hut, which pretty much had shot by shot color adjustments (with varying levels of success).

The timestamps you’ve used are definitely the ideal way to represent which shots you’re asking about. However, it can also be helpful to include screenshots to quickly demonstrate which shots you’re discussing. If you’re asking about some specific tearing or compositing issues, a screenshot perhaps with the area highlighted could help explain what you’re talking about.

The point is most likely moot, as the next time this is upgraded (3.0), Harmy won’t be using GOUT sources. So these shots will either be taken from 35mm entirely, or re-rotoscoped, using 35mm instead of GOUT.

Thanks for all the info. I don’t think screenshots will show what I’m talking about. It’s the motion which exposes the issue. I think the problem arises from the two sources weaving differently (the blu ray has quite a bit of weave at some points) and so the two sources are going in and out of alignment and this exposes where the rotoscoping edge is. Possibly a very feathered edge blending the two sources would’ve made it not so noticeable, but I have no experience with this kind of work, so I don’t know if that’s even an option.

The issue can be seen at those time stamps, but is most noticeable on the last one, which is as the hologram disappears. But like you said, it really doesn’t matter anyway as the next version will have it redone. I was mostly wondering if maybe it had been done differently in a past version. It just really stood out to me. To be fair, I was watching it on a 125" screen. But once I knew it was there, I could also plainly see it on my laptop screen when I was looking for it. Impressively, this was the only issue I noticed while watching on the big screen. Empire is up next.

ROTJ V2.5 MKV
Approximately 1:53:10

After Luke defeats Vader, he looks at his hand. His lightsaber goes through the railing on the left side of the frame.

Should go over it or was that messed up in the original?

The only other thing I noticed on ROTJ was the saturation was inconsistent on Luke’s lightsaber especially during the Death Star scenes. Vader’s saber looked great and in some shots Luke’s did too, but in other shots it looked like a blurry green glob and was highly distracting.

Otherwise 2.5 looks terrific! The only visual deficiencies are from Lucas cutting corners on production. Great work guys!

The lightsaber is the same in that shot in Despecialized and Grindhouse.

Ok thanks Depheros. It was like that for a few seconds in that scene. Very strange!

Empire 1:37:29 - Sky darkens above Luke suddenly

1:47:23 - Missing shell casings on hallway ground.

0:20:16 - panel on the floor is lit at Vader’s feet. This is an SE addition.

Is there a wobbliness to the 35mm footage used to replace GOUT scenes in Jedi? Primarily on Lapti Nek and Yub Nub (and a little bit in one shot of the Sarlac, where Luke is standing on the diving board above it).

I noticed that the matte painting and/or set seems to be altered even more. Here’s a comparison between Despecialized and Grindhouse (gamma boosted so you can see it better). Take a look at the support beams and walls on the sides. Also the lines surrounding the holes in the floor look brighter in Despecialized (not sure if that was changed or not).

Hey guys, I’m really confused about something in Jedi that I hope someone (especially Harmy, if he sees this) could answer. The dance number in 2.5, which is entirely TN1’s footage as far as I know, looks a little wobbly in a couple of shots. This is confusing me because most shots are totally stable, but the shot of Boba Fett and the medium-high angle shot from behind Jabba of the green woman and that big fat lady are kind of jittery. What’s more confusing is that I revisited Dark Jedi’s V3 of Jedi and the Boba Fett shot has shakiness to it in that also. Is this a Despecialized Edition side effect or has it always been there? There’s no shakiness to the TN1 footage in Star Wars or Empire, and those are older so that’s why it caught me off guard. There also doesn’t appear to be any in the Sarlac scenes, so I think it might be part of the actual original footage.

Well, one major point of correction is that there is no TN1 footage in Jedi 2.5. That’s a different scan, the whole of which you can watch in Harmy’s Jedi Grindhouse release.

I don’t know about those specific shots, but if you see the same exact motion in the Boba shot in a GOUT release, presumably it’s present in the negative. It could have been stabilized for the SE (I don’t know if the exact shots you’re talking about are present in the SE) I’m not familiar with the shot. If so, you might be the first to have noted that change. As described in the first post, this thread functions best if you provide a time stamp of what you’re discussing.

Gate weave in scans can be a pain to remove. Poita’s process seems incredibly stable. But for those of us using other less sophisticated techniques (I am pretty sure Harmy would have used some Adobe type software or else an avisynth script), the results can be quite variable, especially if there is a lot of motion on the screen. But it sounds like this might just be part of the original film.

12:46 is the Boba Fett shot, and 12:56 is the shot of the green, skinny dancer and the fat dancer. 13:08 is another place that might have gate weave but I can’t quite tell. The Boba Fett shot especially looks a little unstable in the GOUT but I’m not sure exactly. The reason it confused me is because most shots in the sequence are completely stable, but a select few specific shots as a whole have this quality to them.

I don’t know if this was already covered, but the Despecialized Edition of A New Hope is missing a goof the original theatrical version had; after “Red Leader this is Gold Leader” line but before the shot of Luke, a Y-Wing in the background suddenly disappears for a frame or few.

Author
Time

Is this a problem for 2.7 but not 2.5? And is this something they fixed for the 97SE? I suppose it is possible that I accidentally removed the problem as I did use Harry’s 97SE for its color at some points.

Though I did go through every visual change in 005’s gallery, so I would be surprised. still, it’s possible.

Author
Time

Just to follow up on this, the error occurs after, “Red leader this is gold leader, we’re starting our attack run”, and before “I copy gold leader” (a shot back on the base), right? The error is present as it should be in 2.7. Are you perhaps watching v1.0 of Harmy’s or something? I’m also not sure what you mean about the shot of Luke, as I’m pretty sure that doesn’t occur at that point.

Thanks, though!

The shot of Luke I was referring to was during the line “I copy Gold Leader”, I was just giving a visual so you can find the error on the Y-Wing prior to that.

And yes, I probably was watching the 1.0 version.

Nope, you were right. I was talking about a different shot.

Damn. Must have been something they fixed in 97 that slipped in.

Edit: Hmm. I swear I knew about this change, but I don’t think I see it in either Harmy’s Despecialized Gallery or doubleofive’s change gallery. That explains how it missed my spot checking at the end, but I could have sworn it was, at one point, in such a gallery.

A part of Return Of The Jedi (v2.5) AVCHD was taken down or something (speciffically HARMY-DEED-VI-V2.5-AVCHD-MULTIPART.part09.rar on uloz.to). If anyone could try to reupload it temporarily somewhere until the file is put back on uloz.to please send it to me. Thanks

I don’t know if this has been reported before, but at 15:39 of Star Wars 2.7, There is a subtle, yet noticeable change in brightness from the beginning to the end of this shot. This is from the Blu-Ray, since it is not in the theatrical release.

Maybe if “anyone” had stolen an original reel of every Star Wars films when were released, this work would be more easy.

Maybe “anyone” should do it, or Lucas will change it again before the next moon rise.

Can any of these reels be found and bought in black market?

😉
