4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 105

It’s interesting and kinda sad that the whole twitter conversation pictured above began with this

.

Is it possible Lucas retained final cut on these films in the sellout to Disney?

Author

Not trying to argue, but I’d like a better assurance than that. It’s a nightmare scenario, and I can totally see Lucas pushing it through. After all, Disney only really cares about being able to make new movies and Lucas was always careful about having control over his films.

Well, I mean, if Lucas didn’t want anything related to the OUT to be released, then we wouldn’t get 24 bit audio remasters of Lapti Nek and Yub Nub, right? After 93’ the original version of Jedis soundtrack ceased to be rereleased until recently.

Honestly I think Lucas just didn’t want to spend the money remastering the original versions of his films. If he was really that adamant about people not being able to see them then he wouldn’t have released them in those DVD Limited Editions.

Putting that into the contract would be a really pissy thing to do. I don’t think he honestly cares that much. I really don’t think he ever put that much thought towards the SEs. He prefers the them, and that’s probably why he commissioned 4K scans so that they would live on. But when he sold the company he knew he was selling away everything. They felt no need to follow his ST story treatments, for instance.

Sometimes I think hidalgo gets too far into conversations he shouldn’t and tells a lie or half truth to get out.

2012? So Lucasfilm had a 4K version less than a year after charging 90 bucks for a box with the heavily flawed one from 2004? Well, that sounds douchey enough to be true.

But I wouldn’t worry too much about Hidalgo’s tweets, he would not be in the loop about this, particularly the Fox side of it. (I feel kind of bad for him, his twitter seems like a nightmare)

I wish someone could just ask Gareth Edwards, directly & on the record, which damn version of SW he saw in this 4K “restoration print”. Seems every time there’s an anniversary we all get our hopes up and then… (insert Vader-esque “Nooooooooooo!!!” here)

I’m really hoping Pablo lied.

He doesn’t need to lie, it might well be the truth that the Edwards 4K print in 2014 was a Reliance Lucas SE. But that doesn’t mean that there’s not a subsequent 4K OOT restoration.

Further info from Hidalgo’s Twitter:

  1. Someone asked him if George made 4K versions of 5, 6 & 1. His reply: “@Sora96 @RealCGallant @druzod1012 No one’s said anything about those, so I’m not gonna be one to do it.”

  2. Hidalgo also says that the Reliance 4K cut that Edwards watched dated from 2012 in reply to a comment that Edwards made it seem like it was new: “@RealCGallant @druzod1012 Yeah. 2012.”

Learnings:

  • the Edwards cut is older than we thought
  • Hidalgo either doesn’t know about a 4K saga / OT / OOT set or isn’t saying

We should create a [Crushed OUT Hopes Memorial Thread]. Imagine the discussions about the OUT in 60 years: “You know what, STAR WARS’ 100th anniversary is coming up. Oh well, since McDonalds bought Disney after the Third World War we should get our hopes high that we will finally get the OUT.”

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

Well, at first I thought it was going to be the former, with “No one’s said anything about those”, but “I’m not gonna be the one to do it” clearly sounds more like he’s not going to be the source of a leak on that one. It doesn’t mean anything exciting in terms of it being pre or post SE. Just that he’s commenting on IV because it was already out there by Edwards (and the Reliance reel, presumably). Perhaps some progress was made on V and VI as well, or they were at least commissioned?

Very true. 🤣

So, this is what we know so far…?:

  1. Disney buys LucasFilm in October 2012.
  2. Reliance scans the OT ('97 SEs) in 4k, presumably starting in 2012, finishes around 2014.
  3. Gareth Edwards watches a “recently finished” 4k version of ANH in 2014.
  4. Rumors ahoy!

The scans being done in 2012 makes perfect sense. Disney would definitely want something better than the awful 10-bit 1080p telecines that were used for the Blu-rays - they were outdated by the time they were even finished! Even if it’s not the OOT, we will still have much better material to work with.

The Reliance stuff started before the sale to Disney and ended after it. I suspect it was probably finished in 2014 when it went up on their website.

I’m not disconcerted by Hidalgo’s comments. All he said is that it was an old 4K thing that George wanted. We always knew that Reliance’s effort was old. It gives no inkling as to whether or not we’ll see the OUT this year.

Pablo is almost as good at the vague non-answer as Dave Filoni is.
