Thanks!

The video offers yet more proof that Disney/LFL approached Tarkin two ways. One, by having Guy Henry stand in front of a blue-screen wearing a headcam rig, to produce a CGI Peter Cushing; the other, by having Henry on set in full costume and makeup, to play the role without worrying about CGI at all.

Here’s Henry as Tarkin in the CGI motion-capture rig:

And here’s Guy Henry on set, playing Tarkin via simple recasting:

Here’s hoping we get to see that latter version of the film at some point.

It’s most likely early camera tests and rehearsal footage (notice no screens behind him are switched on). There’s also a shot of him in full costume with a Leia stand in which was never to be part of the movie. They most likely got him to act out the scenes in full gear for the CG techs to nail the lighting

Those aren’t screens in the second pic, they’re windows. They’d insert a starfield behind him in post.

The shot of Henry wearing the CGI camera rig is definitely from early tests, but as far as I can tell the rig didn’t change much - they just added a few extra dots on the uniform tunic, and it still used bluescreen backing.

And we know from other photos that Henry was definitely on set with Ben Mendelsohn - without the camera rig.

I know they are windows. i was talking about the screens set up outside. They used Hires screen for many of the background elements instead of solely replying on green screen. But, if this was an actual filming session either the screen would be turned on or there would be a green screen. You would not film with a grey background because it would be ridiculous to do so if you needed to insert a background.

Well, the shot of Mendelsohn and Henry on set (sans rig) has the video turned on:

Recreating Tarkin was undoubtedly rather like how the CGI skeleton pirates were handled in the first Pirates of the Caribbean.

First the director would shoot a “practice take” with the actors playing skeletons on set with other actors, to get a reference for the lighting & choreography. Then they’d do a second take on set, using only the actors whose roles didn’t require CGI. The undead pirates would also be filmed separately, so the actors could be digitally transformed into skeletons and overlaid into the scene.

But in this case, as a byproduct of the footage shot for reference, an entire alternate version of the Tarkin scenes exists without the need for any CGI whatsoever. I’m sure Disney is smart enough to make use of that.

How can you tell?

If it’s the hair, there was specifically a stage of the CGI which used Henry’s head but without any hair. Possibly the second picture in my previous post is actually of an intermediate stage where they put Peter Cushing’s hair onto Henry’s head.

EDIT: This is in fact the case. Further scrutiny of the video reveals some odd artifacting of Tarkin’s hair in that particular shot. Meanwhile, Henry’s performance, both on set and in mo-cap, had him wearing a graying dark-brown wig.

I wonder if Disney is planning a “PT special edition” one day. Could be a great opportunity to add a “better” Tarkin at the end of ROTS. This tech is fascinating (and at least R1 has respected the SW tradition to develop special effect tech to another level).

One thing I really liked about RO is that we finally got a Star Wars movie without a Skywalker.

That was certainly not the response I expected.

Might be what you wanted to say.

Technically, this is the Rogue One Spoilers thread, we can’t spoil the other movies for Frink.

It depends: is R1 the prequel to ANH… or the sequel to ROTS ?

Wait a minute, are you saying that Luke and Leia get married at some point, or that Vader and Leia get married? The latter doesn’t make sense because that would make Leia a Vader, not a Skywalker.

Wait…do Luke and Vader get married? That makes more sense, although I would kind of expect Luke to take Vader’s name rather than the other way around.

I’m starting to wonder if this Rogue One plot hole is worse than the TFA one about the map hole.
