Now, what you could do is put the resulting MPEGs (VOBs) on your computer, run them through TMPGenc, and cut out the blank spaces. Then you just remaster the disc with your own menus, etc. Of course, if your computer doesn't have a DVD burner, then you'd have to feed the video and audio to your standalone (if it has this capability). Unfortunately, this means you are recompressing your original MPEG again, which isn't a great thing.
