George Lucus and John Landis are good mates.

These rumors just keep flying, but still nothing concrete. I’m just finding it hard to get my damned hopes up. I’d download Harmy, but I’m scared of getting arrested.
You wont get arrested. The person who shared it would be more likely to get arrested. I’ve downloaded a ton of torrents over the years and never had an issue.
Almost all of the fan-edits of films I want are of movies I own at least one copy of, and sometimes several. My brother is a lawyer trying to get into Internet intellectual property law and says that it can be a pretty big fine if I get caught, but not arrested. Thanks, Atticus. Millions of people torrent stuff, but I swear, I’d be the damned one who got caught.
if you get a fine then what’s the point in getting these fan edits at all?

To enjoy them because most people won’t get a fine because they own the official releases?

That is correct, Commander.
If you guys are trusting Disney to do anything right, I think you’re going to be sadly mistaken.
Are you able to make any posts that don’t complain about TFA or RO?
That post had nothing to do with TFA or RO. It was about Disney not releasing the OOT after nearly 5 years.
They will release something in 2017. The 40th anniversary is too big a cash cow to ignore. It just has to include an original theatrical cut cleaned up. There is a 4K version out there as the library of congress made a copy. Lucas films just stopped them from showing it so far.

As long as you can prove you’ve bought the products available then there is nothing they can do. Harry’s versions are well worth it. Excellent copies. Let’s face it if they re released the original versions I’d take the day off & buy it the moment it came out. So the ball is in their court so to say. These fan versions are now part of the legacy so you shouldn’t deny yourself a piece of history.

This is incredibly innacurate. The LOC can legally publicly screen anything in their collection without permission from any other entity. They choose not to do anything that might rile lucasfilm for fear of damaging a very good working relationship with the company. With a few notable exceptions that we obviously care about, lucasfilm is actually one of the more generous an accommodating studios that the LOC works with.
The scan the LOC has done is a 2k scan of the copyright deposit print that they made for archival purposes (their goal is to scan every piece of film they have for future preservation). It is NOT a commercial scan and it WOULD NOT be used for any sort of home video release.
The truth is, while it’s great that the LOC has copyright deposit prints of all three original films, none of them are pristine (well, ROTJ is pretty close, but Star Wars is pretty pink, and ESB is blood red). Star Wars was a release print that was only sent to the LOC well after initial release (likely sometime in 1978) and it shows all the wear and tear from being projected many many times. And ultimately, some of the work being done by this community will generate far better results than the scans the LOC has done/is doing. They aren’t using multiple prints. They aren’t doing any cleanup. They are just doing raw scans of each print, with basic color correction in the case of faded prints with the sole intent of making a digital backup copy of what they have. It’s not a restoration in any sense of the word.
The Library of Congress has not selected Return of the Jedi for preservation.

You’re confusing copyright deposits with the National Film Registry. LOC has original prints of all three from when they were released. What they don’t have are the pristine, conservation grade prints of SW and TESB they requested for the registry.
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.
In regards to the original 1977 film, did they not acquire such a print back in the 80’s when it became one of the very first movies to be added to the registry? Or was there some factor preventing them from doing so?
I’d have to do some more digging to remember all the when’s and why’s, but no they never received the requested copy of Star Wars for the National Film Registry. Lucasfilm offered them a copy of the 1997 SE, which they politely declined.
The copyright deposit prints are, as CHEWBAKAspelledwrong pointed out, are an entirely different thing altogether and have nothing to do with the NFR. When a studio applies for/receives a copyright on a movie they are asked to submit a copy of said movie to the LOC copyright depository. This copy is then used as the primary reference in court should any copyright lawsuits be filed over that media. The LOC has original 35mm prints of all three OT films, as well as 35mm prints of the 1997SE.
Star Wars is an original 1977 print with the original crawl, shows normal wear and tear from being a standard release print shown in cinema before being sent to the LOC and is somewhat pink faded. ESB looks pretty clean damage-wise from what I saw, but it is severely red faded just like every regular release print of ESB we’ve seen. ROTJ looks brand new, like it was struck yesterday and appears to have gone straight to the LOC without being sent to cinemas first. All three SE prints look brand spanking new and were almost certainly sent straight to the LOC as soon as they were struck.
I mean. I would just prepare myself for it being a 4k upscale of the Special Editions.
That is possible but I would keep some faith. Disney has been doing okay by Star Wars so far. I’m sure they know how fans feel about the SEs. I’m holding onto hope unless a Disney press release specifically says it’s 4K copies of SEs.
I’m totally pre-ordering if they ARE the original cuts 😃

why not both i like some of the special edition changes.
Just so we can settle this part of the debate:
The 4k master is not an upscale.
Yes, we know this with a degree of certainty.
The only things that would be upscaled in the SE are practically all of the vfx shots, since even the “unaltered” miniature shots were still recomped and this only would’ve been done in 2k.
However, it’s worth noting that even new movies made today in 2016, even if they’re finished as a 4k DI, still only have their vfx shots rendered at 2k. So, there’s nothing at all disingenuous about the '97 fx shots being upscaled from 2k as far as I’m concerned.
It’s also worth noting that the 2004 and 2011 changes may possibly have been finished at true 2k and not 1080p (subtle and perhaps insignificant distinction, but still). ILM might have saved them on a hard drive and simply “plugged them in” to the new 4k master. But those changes are so few and far between either way, so they’re not worth worrying about really.
What matters is that most of the OT-SE is still the original camera negative, or at least IP replacements for the frames of the o-neg that were damaged beyond repair. This fresh 4k scan utilized for Reliance MediaWorks’ 16-bit 4k master will bring out even more detail than was possible with the 2k scan Lowry used twelve years ago.
There’s a regular on the Steve Hoffman Forum that has been saying for years based on supposed connections that the OUT was meant to be released in 2015, but was postponed until 2017 because ANH needed more work done. If it were coming from any other forum I wouldn’t put much faith in it, but the regulars on there tend to work in the business and know what they’re talking about.

I remember hearing about that but I’d forgotten the source, so thank you for bringing it up.
The only other rumors we have to go on are John Landis’ story about talking to George and the report that Disney had requested a look at the LoC’s old print of Star Wars '77 (I forget who reported this).

The latter was “Vidiot”, who worked on the DVDs of the movies. I definitely believe him. What purpose they’d have for a digital copy of a Star Wars print is anyone’s guess. It’s more attention than the original versions have been given in a while, but for all we know Lucasfilm is just trying to consolidate all of its movies digitally. The one I’m referring to is a lot more vague than the Vidiot source, who is definitely trustworthy, and admittedly there is no real reason to put much stock in his claim other than that he is a regular on the Steve Hoffman forum and has been confident in the same story for a while. He isn’t the only guy on there that cites a supposed source within Disney/Fox/Lucasfilm regarding Star Wars.
Then there’s always Mike Verta, and who knows where he fits into all of this.

Bill Hunt is hopeful for theatrical Star Wars in 4K.
Here is the relevant part:
“Speaking of Star Wars, this is a very interesting (and completely unsurprising) revelation: The Little White Lies website has a new interview with director Gareth Edwards in which he reveals that Lucasfilm has a brand new 4K restoration of A New Hope. It’s not clear if this is the original 1977 version or some version of the Special Edition, but in order to even be able to create a 4K Special Edition, you’d have to first scan all the original negative in 4K. And Disney is not the kind of studio that takes a chance of losing their most valuable film assets. So we would bet a lot of money they have an original version in 4K, and probably Empire and Jedi too. When we might see them is a different question.”
Obviously he isn’t speaking from a position of inside knowledge, but I trust him to know what he’s talking about.

Now that this old news is resurfacing once more, I find myself reading the same thing: “the negatives for the originals are gone! no chance for the theatrical cuts!”
Mostly everyone who’ve wrote these articles can guess (or perhaps even know) that Reliance scanned the '97 SE. Because of this, they are all under the impression that there’s no simple way to recover the theatrical versions of the OT – because rumor has it the o’negs for the three films were conformed to the '97 SE. However, you don’t need a negative. Interpositives are very close in terms of quality to the original source, and if I’m not mistaken, they retain the original color timing, unlike the negative.
If the negatives actually are recut, then no sweat. Now, if for some reason LucasFilm only have access to the recut negatives and beat-up release prints, then sure – we can panic. But as seem from both MVerta and Poita’s work, a good 35mm release print scan can hold up very nicely.
My rant is over. Goodnight, and Happy New Year.

I believe color correction is done at the inter negative stage.

As we head into another endless round of that nonsense, it’s worth pointing out that Robert Harris has once again (just in the last few days on Home Theater Forum) reiterated that this is not an issue.

Does anybody remember which of the directors for a Disney Star Wars movie said that he hated the Special Editions? If it was Gareth Edwards then that would be positive regarding the OUT’s prospects, because Edwards seemed pretty excited about the 4K print he saw. I can’t find it online, but I remember one of the director’s old forum posts being dug up years ago and he said a bunch of really dramatic stuff about how much he hates the SEs. Does anyone remember?

Edwards was once very outspoken against the revisionism, yes.

Rian Johnson is also not a fan of the SE’s. When the blu Rays were released in 2011 he asked on his Twitter feed if they were releasing the “actual original movies” or the “90’s cartoon versions”

Do you think that his emphasis on the 4K print and how great the experience was points toward this 4K print being non-SE?
