Thought on de-SE'ing the DVD — Page 14

A quick update...

I had intended to start sending out DVDs this weekend, having successfully restored the receding Star Wars logo to the correct speed, but a few more things have been cropped up on watching my latest "beta". But they shouldn't take long (although one's going to be controversial) so I'll hopefully get sending next week.

I just now noticed this.

4. When 3PO and R2 are in the pod, the Star Destroyer recedes into the background. Unfortunately so do the stars, which is not what they should see. I've replaced the stars with non-receeding ones.

I never noticed that one.

14. I've painted out (but kept the shot) the humanoid droid smacking down the floating droid as the speeder enters Mos Eisley.

That might make the shot salvagable. ^_^

19. Han fires first!
20. The single frame of Greedo before he fries is no longer a poor dummy.
21. Jabba - you're cut! I've done my best to reconstruct the OT here, right down to matching the number of frames in the transition.

Always a good thing! I'm surprised Lucas never fixed that himself.

23. I've painted in the radar dish on the Falcon as it sits in docking bay 94 (just before "What a piece of junk!").

More things Lucas should've fixed.

25. Before Leia is brought to Tarkin, there's a shot of him and another officer standing in front of a poorly projected picture of Alderaan. I've replaced the projection with a shot of Alderaan from later, replicating the original shading and size.

The pic you have looks pretty sweet. Now if only you'd ditched the stupid praxis ring.

42. In various shots, I've painted out the power cable that led from Ben's sleeve to his lightsabre.

Yet another thing Lucas should've caught.

43. When Ben gets cut down, I've added in his face so it looks less like an empty cloak.

Intriguing. Can I see a pic of that one.

54. I've fixed the Death Star schematic that appears on the monitor and in the briefing. The weapon bowl should appear above the equatorial trench, not on it.

THANK YOU! I've always though that that shot sticks out as something that should've been fixed but wasn't ever since the SE came out. AOTC's made it even more painfully obvious. The DS countdown clock is a nice touch too.

68. Denis Lawson's name is now spelt correctly in the end credits.

Another nice touch.

Out of curiousity, did you fix the Rebel Fanfare at the opening of the Battle of Yavin? I watched the shot at a Good Guys and was aghast at how it was so inaudiable. Also, if you're going to keep the CGI BOY, is it possible to touch up the X-wings? I don't know about you, but the fact that every single new one is Red 2 with a blue R2 unit and rust in the same spots just spoke volumes of ILM's laziness and really ruined the believability. At the very least, I'd love to see Luke's X-wing with a consistent stripe throughout the battle(it's a solid stripe in the hangar, and broken in space due to only one X-wing prop on the set).

All in all, it sounds interesting. You and Mverta seem to understand the potential of a SE more than Lucas. Instead of all this CGI junk, simple removals of garbage mattes and fixing continuety errors should have been the focus.

I suppose it's too late to grab a copy, but then, there's always the torrent release.

Here's Ben in his cloak. It does look better when seen in context.

Now if only you'd ditched the stupid praxis ring.

That would be impossible without resorting to footage from before the Special Edition, which I think looks a lot worse, or creating a brand new explosion which would be too much.

No I didn't. Edited to add I've just been doing some research and it looks like I was mistaken about where this change was. Now I've had a chance to check it, I don't think it would be easy enough to fix. Using SE Laserdisc audio is fine for small changes, but I don't think I could paste it in seamlessly, and a 2.0 soundtrack wouldn't be enough to work from because the scene is sound effect heavy.

Here's the new Death Star schematic, rendered and animated in POVRay:

After too many hours working on the anamorphic frames, circles stopped looking like circles to me unless they were 1.33x taller than they were wide.

And here's the Falcon, with dish:

All of those look great and I'm looking forward to getting to see this. About the fanfare, maybe you could talk to Neil S. Bulk about it. Apparently he fixed this. It really is a glaring problem for all of us that grew up with these movies. Those trumpets are something I will hum out loud or play over in my head whenever driving on the highway.

It's just something that becomes engrain in you and when it is missing, it's glaring.

But if you say screw that, I understand that too.

Don't worry, I completely agree that should be restored - I just didn't think it was easy. But I wonder if I might be able to use my soundtrack CD to restore the fanfare. It's not overpowering at that point, so I might get away with using a stereo source to replace 5.1 music.

Darth Editous: this fanfare can be found in the French mix, on the official DVD.

It shouldn't be difficult to mix in from this source.

Unfortunately it's not present on the R2 DVD, just 5.1 and 2.0 in English. Even if I did have the French soundtrack, it's 2.0 so the effects for that section would have to be downgraded. If I mix in from the CD, only the music will be 2.0 (and I can construct a center channel and repeat L and R for the rear channels) and the sound effects will remain the same.

Those screenshots have me eagerly awaiting your ANH, Editous!

Forgive my ignorance, but I sent you a PM about it quite a while ago, and did not specify NTSC or PAL, and I have no idea which one I need. I'm in the US, so I guess I'll just trust your better judgement.

Also, Editous...the John Williams soundtrack that is coming out soon is going to have some select tracks mixed in 5.1, hopefully the Fanfare is one of them.

That may be something worth holding out for to investigate alittle further before the release.

I'm going to pop in the DVD bonus disc, and check out what scenes could be re-inserted into an edit, one that comes to mind is the ROTJ throne room saber duel with the correct color sabers, one segment that stands out is when Luke and Vader clash sabers in front of the Emperor's face, on the bonus disc the sabers have white cores...if the quality is comparable, it would be alot easier to insert the scenes, instead of trying to color correct them or draw them in by hand.

Also I like the segment on the bonus disc where they show the Original crawl without "Episode IV or A New Hope attached to it" I remember hearing that someone had actually restored that original crawl to an edit...It would be a nice bonus feature or easter egg.

Along those lines, Sebstian Shaw could be put back in to the force ghost scene. The original version of that scene is somewhere on the bonus disc.

Only a few seconds of it. I believe THX WOW has a longer segment.

darth editous. rather than have a green R5 unit and introduce another continuity error. why not just pinch a shot of artoo rocking back and forth instead. it makes more sense at that point as Artoo is trying to be bought anyway and there are enough shots in that segment you could repeat one of them easily without it really being noticed.

I thought of your suggestion too tellan and decided to take a look. I took a look at what shots are available to substitute for that scene and whether they would work well, I decided that I liked the original scene better. I think that what Darth Editous is doing by painting the reappearing R5 unit is a nice compromise between the two ideas.

The reason I like that original scene, even with its glaring continuity error, is because I feel that when Artoo slowly turns his head in Owen's direction it is like he is saying "see, I'm just as good." It is like he is showing that he is a perfectly funvtional astromech droid to Owen who didn't want to buy him until now. For some reason I have always felt that there was just that small bit of non-verbal communication in that shot. I don't think any of the other possible shots you could replace it with would be as good.

Maybe I am just on crack...has anyone else ever sensed that when watching that scene?

Anyway, with it only being that one shot, I think changing the droid's color would work fine. After all, you can't really see what is to the right of Artoo after Red blows up. Who's to say that the green R5 isn't actually there?

.........................................................................................................................................

I took aother look at the DVD just now and found one possible shot that might work as a replacement. Right after Luke concedes to his uncle he tells C-3P0 "C'mon." We see a shot of Artoo as Luke and 3P0 go walking by, and then Luke calls to Red. Well, if you reversed the film during that short shot of R2, and you edited Luke and 3P0's walk-by a bit, than I think that it might work...and it will be very similar to the shot we're replacing.

What do you think?

Had an idea for the Green R5 debate. How 'bout something less eye-grabbing than green. Black, grey, brown, white ... some neutral color to take one's eye away. Just a thought...

Hi Magnoliafan! Long time, no see.

ADM, I was look over "Making of a Saga", and realized that the "Shaw ghost scene" is vertically compressed - meaning it was probably struck from the anamorphic print. Do you have this documentary?

I think I have the documentary somewhere, though I can't vouch for the resolution. If the shot is is compressed, would it still be in standard 4:3 resolution? I'm just curious if it'd be beneficial at all to work with.

MF, long time no see. I hope you'll be joining us regularly again. Things have been too quiet around here lately.
