I tried to read the Expanded Universe, starting with the much-hailed Thrawn Trilogy. I couldn't get into it, and after awhile I didn't really care.
I must say that I preferred the novelizations of the original trilogy, in some ways, to the original trilogy itself.
To me, Star Wars is the original trilogy and only the original trilogy. Anything else is just an optional expansion that need not have any bearing upon that universe.
