Info Wanted: Preparing for SW marathon, wondering about O-OT - which preservation set is best?

 (Edited)

In honor of the series winding down with Episode III, I plan to go through everything I’ve got regarding the movies in the weeks ahead, in chronological order. I plan to start with the O-OT (including soundtracks, books, the making of and Holiday Specials, etc.), then move on to the SEs, then the prequels and the 2004 OT DVDs.

Still, regarding the O-OT, all I have are my beloved 1990 CBS-FOX pan/scan videos and some asian DVD transfers of the Def. Collection (with some sound-sync problems and such).

I’d very much like to upgrade to the best version of the O-OT possible (Although I hope and pray LFL gets their act together and releases the original versions of each film–with alternate sound mixes, etc., for historical accuracy, which is what this preservation effort is all about, right?). I also worry about player compatibility, as I have a 2001-era Sony DVD player, and I wouldn’t want to acquire some solid O-OT DVDs only to be unable to play them. (I’d also like to get the making of specials and Holiday Special on DVD, too–upgraded from my VHS tapes).

Any suggestions on what the best way to go would be? What set(s) are the best, and how would they be acquired?

The Droids series was set before Episode IV.

If you have the currently available retail version of Droids on DVD (and the Ewoks Animated Adventures), not all of the original episodes are on those DVD's.

I also notice that you do not have the Holiday Special in your list...................

4 - 5 - 3 - 1 - 6 - 2

"YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ONE!!!"

I not doing the ultimate marathon, but being a "Gushing Geek" myself, I've already watched Ep1 and Ep2. Now I'm waiting for Ep3.

I will then follow up w/ HipHops corrected DVD ANH, the 2004 ESB then follow up w/ ADigitalMan's ROTJ (I wish all the sub titles were there though )

Isn't Labyrinth of Evil a prequel to ROTS? I know The Approching Storm was a prequel to AOTC. There's also Rouge planet which takes place after Episode I

Made for IE Forum's Episode III theme month - May 2005.

And if you're willing to go with Fan Films, Revelations fits incredibly well in between Eps III and IV. It's really good, too!

Edit: I should answer the original question too!

It really depends on what you're looking for. I'd suggest the TR47 versions, because the sound is amazing, and the video is pretty good too. That set is barebones, but it should work on any DVD player. Read the stickies for information about the different versions.

As for availability, a number of the sets are available for download with a BitTorrent client through www.myspleen.net. Alternatively, you can often talk to the creators (or Rikter), and they can help you get a set, either for free or for a small fee (the cost of the blank DVDs and postage, etc.)

Shouldn't you put rebel mission to ord mantell between ANH and ESB too?
And now, for your feature presentation:
The Classic Re-re-re-release of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back.
In this version the word "WOOKIE" has been changed to "HAIR CHALLENGED ANIMAL" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks.
