I just prefer the ESB to Star wars (why can't I call it ANH, I was born like, 15 years after it was changed).

ANH was epic and had constant movement from place to place, revealing just a dab of every aspect of the universe while showing a great story line that covered up an even greater story line to come.

ESB was dark and expanded on existing characters much more, while introducing some new ones as well. You saw that Darth Vadar was merely human instead of just a two dimensional bad guy (putting his helmet on facing from behind him, and later announcing that he was Luke's father). Lots of tragedy as well as twists and turns throughout.

ROTJ had a more lighthearted feel about it with the Ewoks and celebration at the end, but with all of the battles that took place in it (Jabba's palace, the Death Star, Luke/Vadar/Emperor fight), it definately balanced the tone.

If I were forced to pick one, I'd go with Empire Strikes Back, mainly because I like darker films. But honestly, I still like the other two just as much.

ESB is my favorite, although as my brother says, it's like asking what my favorite ice cream is...they're ALL good.

ANH definitely had many great moments, including the binary sunset with the poignant (sp?) music (what kid hasn't been able relate to Luke at that moment?) and the Battle of Yavin. Although I think overall that it moved quite slowly in the beginning (especially with the droids getting lost on Tatooine).

ESB was almost non-stop from beginning to end. The sense that the Falcon was 1/2 second away from being captured at all times just adds to the excitement, as well as the betrayal at Bespin. The music took a leap forward from being already legendary, especially the scene when Han is lowered into the freezing pit...the music combined with Chewie's screaming ratchets up the agony, and is still emotionally powerful.

ROTJ had some awesome points: The Tiberium Shuttle debut (which got screwed up in the Spec Editions) in the beginning was cool. The saber duel at Jabba's palace was good. The entire sub-plot between Luke and Vader was very cool, and the visuals when they're on screen are extremely polished. The throne room battle scenes are still impressive, and the music when Luke whigs out on Vader is very appropriate somehow. I like the new music from the Spec Editions (take your pick which version), and the celebrations on Curruscant make more sense now that we've actually seen what it looks like. Also, I prefer the ORIGINAL actor in the ghostly trio at the end...not Hayden Christensen.

You're 10 years old?

Sorry, I'm 13, and not very good at maths (it was an estimate, OK?)

As a 34 year old, I used to lay it out to people like this:

On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being best)

Star Wars: 11
Empire Strikes Back: 12
Return of the Jedi: 9

For Star Wars, you had to be there at that age at the beginning to truly know what we went through. Seriously.

For Empire, it was more of the same but better... more, eh, realistic? Better character development, better director, better writer. And darker... darker was good.

For Jedi. Parts were great. Parts were shite. Parts were weird and disappointing to me at the age that I was. But, Ewoks aside, the redemption of Anakin and the triumph of Luke made it for me and I went away happy enough.

Let's be a little more realistic...
I'm sick of seing people rating stuff, and never giving a rate below 7.
Have you ever heard of the Gaussian distribution?

In plain english, that means that:
a)70% of the things beiing given a rate/value should be rated between 3.5-6.5 (using a ususal value of sigma, in that case sigma=1,5).
b)For the same sigma value, If something is rated with an "8", it does not mean that it is better than 8 out of 10 other rated stuff, it is better than the 98% of the others.
If something gets a "9", it means it is better than the 99,5% of the others.

Keeping that in mind, here is my own rating of the films:
SW: 8
ESB: 9
ROTJ: 5
TPM: 5.5
AOTC: 7

EDIT: Sorry for the diagram it should have a white background, but I can't fix it. It is better shown if you select it by dragging the mouse over it.
EDIT2: greencapt, By replying to your post I didn't mean to offend you or disagree with you. Your post just reminded my of that thing, and I just wanted to make my point. As you can see, our ratings are placed on a different scale, but they are similar
And now, for your feature presentation:
The Classic Re-re-re-release of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back.
In this version the word "WOOKIE" has been changed to "HAIR CHALLENGED ANIMAL" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks.

Well actually yes I have heard of it and am not moronic to the ways of statistics. Perhaps I didn't make myself clear- those were my ratings as a child. And yes, like the '11' volume setting that Spinal Tap used, the movies had that much of an impact. You'll note that I *didn't* rate the PT films so far; and if I had then I would have used a 1 to 5 scale which I find is plenty enough to cover an expressive view of quality placement on a bell curve.

Might I also add that if your sense of wonder is so adherant to 'reality' I find it hard to believe you could enjoy films so rooted in un-reality and so ridiculous in the face of scientific thinking.

Or maybe I just forgot in my post that 11 and 12 were *above* than 10. Hmmm... perhaps that was just 'new math'.

Read my second edit above. I wrote it before seeing your post, and I think that should set things straight. What I wrote had nothing to do with SW. It is my general comment on people rating stuff (teachers rating students, ratings on various contests etc...)

Edit: Talking about scientific ridiculness, have you ever thought that a Laser beam should not be visible to anyone unless you are the one being killed by it?

Heh heh. No harm done!

And yeah, we could probably start another entire thread (if there isn't one already) on inaccuracies of sci-fi flics in general. But then again, I'd *never* want to get rid of that kick-ass Tie Fighter whoosh sound... (vacuum... we don't need no sticking vaccums in space!)

What do you mean?

And also, you couldn't concentrate a beam of light for that length. Another thing is that when they start up, with a real beam of light, it would just turn on, instead of gradually protruding. And light doesn't make a sound.

Unless the area you're in is filled with smoke or mist, any light beam of that sort *should* just appear as a bright dot on its intended target, ala a laser pointer or scope on a gun.

When scientists finally develop a working, hand-held laser 'gun' they are going to be required by law to put a sound effects chip in the weapon that, every time the trigger is pulled, goes 'Pweee! Pweee!"

For safety reasons, laser weapons should make a distinct sound when fired, or else you could fire them accidently and not even know. As we all know, laser beams travel at the speed of light, so it would be hard/impossible to see a shot from such a weapon.

The fact that distinguishes the Laser beam from any other light beam is that all photons have paraller (or almost parallel) courses. That trait makes laser so usefull, because you can point light to a certain direction. As a consequence, a laser beam cannot be visible, because none of the photons ever reaches your eye. If they did, the light beam would not be concentrated. When you "see" a laser beam in dust, what you actually see are the photons that hit a particle and lost their course, and therefore are not anymore part of the laser beam. The only way to see a laser beam, is for it to be pointed to your eye. So, in the case of a laser gun, the only way to see the beam is to be pointed at your eye when if opens fire.

Couldn't you see the laser point if it was shone on the wall next to you?

Yes you could, but it isn't possible to see the beam itself.

Starwars and most scifi get around this contradiction of physics by coming up with some other explanation for energy-based weapons; starwars blasters shoot charged Tibana gas, not technically light.

Indiana Jones Trilogy?Raiders.
Star Wars?Jedi. Though it took me a few minutes to decide.

a little late on getting in on the thread, but Empire is by far the best film, ANH would be second, and Jedi a distant third. If Jedi would have been ewokless, and had a couple other minor tweaks it would be challenging Empire, but since it doesnt have those changes i have to fast forward through certain parts...

Best movie? ESB

Best scene? Emperor's room in ROTJ (still get the chills when Luke screams "NEVEEEER!" and when the Force Theme starts as Vader lifts Palpatine)

Sorry, impossible for me to see otherwise, it's visceral.

P.S. This goes for all 6 Episodes, of course.
