Also, for some reason I welled up when Jimmy Smits was talking with Mon Mothma about “recruiting the jedi that served you in the Clone Wars”. Something just clicked for me right there. Like I could finally accept that the original six films, while half terrible, may really have taken place in the same universe after all.

Same here. I’ve always felt that there was a disconnect between the Prequels and the OT, but something about this movie helped to smooth that over. Maybe it had something to do with Saw Gerrera. I don’t want to get too political here, but when the Rebels attacked that convoy on Jedha my mind immediately jumped to the Taliban. I thought back to the Onderon arc in TCW, and how the Republic armed those rebels to fight the CIS, only for Saw to turn those arms back on the Empire. I’m convinced this was done on purpose as a reference to the Mujahideen.

Yeah ok. Good luck with that. RO will make a percentage of what TFA did, which was all because of repeat business and the OT actors.

Agree. TFA made money because of the cheap trick of injecting the OT actors into the movie, not because the movie was actually good.

If the movie sucked people wouldn’t have come back to it.

Argumentum ad populum.

And, btw, reviews for TFA are better than RO.

Moving target. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is 89% for TFA, 90% for RO.

There’s MUCH more “heart” in TFA than there is in RO and you care a helluva lot more about the characters.

Couldn’t possibly disagree with you more.

Watching TFA last year and RO this year have made the PT even more irrelevant in my mind because they’ve hammered home how poorly executed the PT is.

RO also renders TFA irrelevant. The reality for the fan base hasn’t fully burned in yet, but RO has grabbed the reins of the SW franchise and jammed it back on track. It’s a coup. In the end, Disney is going to have to rethink the direction of episodes 8 and 9 based on the sensational execution of RO.

That’s not a slam against RO, which I loved, but my excitement about it has been tempered by subsequent viewings.

Personally what I take away from it is that Episode eight will be aimed at 5 - 10 year olds and the Anthologies hopefully will be aiming at higher age ranges teens to adults.

I don’t feel the sequel trilogy is really aimed at adults or at least that is my current perception unless they make the sequel trilogy more mature.

Personally, the whole reason why I got into Star Wars is because of its tremendous heart and soul, which the OT had in abundance. Even Empire, which is the darkest of them all, has an over-abundance of it.

RO is great for a stand-alone but several of these and I’d no longer be a Star Wars fan. Give me the heart of Eps 4-7 on the regular and I’ll be very, very happy.

Oh good! I was hoping to see a screenie of it, since I missed it in the theater. I’m definitely confirming Chopper.

What the hell does “heart” even mean, anyway? Post a vague, eye-of-the-beholder rationale for liking or disliking a movie?

I think it’s a bad move to compare all the films and you don’t have to justify it to me why you like something or not.

I honestly thought that Rogue One was more like episodes 4-6 and nothing like 1-3 or 7

But 7 is closer to 4-6 than 1-3.

I’d take 7 any day rather than 1-3 but I just don’t feel invested in that story line that might change but I don’t really feel the need to go back and watch 7 (only seen it once) where as I would really go back and see Rogue one again because I really liked it.

Perhaps Rogue One will be a Freak Mishap?

RO also renders TFA irrelevant.

You already thought TFA was irrelevant so your statement makes no sense. Anyone who liked TFA would not suddenly dislike it just because RO was also good.

You’re not comprehending the use of the word relevant in this particular context.

Try to explain it then. How does RO make TFA irrelevant?

Finished Rogue One about an hour ago and I liked this movie a lot more than I did the first time. I can’t really go into detail about this movie after two viewings so here are things I liked and didn’t like about the film

Good:

  • Top notch cinematography

  • The plot and small things like the Cassian killing Galen thing

  • Force abilties are only used in one scene

  • Ties in perfectly with STAR WARS

  • Fun and energetic (especially the 3rd act)

  • Mostly amazing CGI

  • Funnier than expected

  • Vader was used sparringly and effectively (though this comes at a price)

  • New and interesting ship and Trooper designs

  • Felt like a war movie/grittier side of the Galactic Civil War

  • Director Krennic was an interesting villain and got a very just death

Bad:

  • 1st act was kind of disjointed

  • Most of the Rogue One crew lack real depth

  • CGI Leia and Tarkin

  • Vader should have had Tarkin’s role

  • Soundtrack is uninspired and hardly has any noteworthy moments

  • The effects of the reshoots is very apparent as there are a few lines that were in the trailer but were not in the film. The most important one being Krennic calling the Death’s Star’s power immeasurable.

All in all this a great film and will be accompanying any Star Wars marathon I have.

8/10

Give a fucking break. Star Wars films have always been for EVERYONE and have always had the power to make adults feel like a kid again. Just because Rogue One killed everyone doesn’t mean it’s aimed for adults and TFA isn’t. TFA is tonally on par with the OT and RO is a bit different by design. If you can’t handle stories that aren’t what you consider “more mature” that’s too bad for you. But saying Ep8 will be aimed toward 5-10 year olds is just ridiculous.

Oddly enough, where I live, so many people were polarized by TFA to an extent that they don’t want to go see RO in cinemas. So, there goes all that “how much money it will make compared to TFA” argument out of the window.

I don’t want to derail this but taste is subjective. To me, TFA is an incredibly well done movie but an incredibly soulless one. It’s the marketing director’s sweet dream come true. Repeated viewings have made it worse each time. Whenever people say they couldn’t connect to ROs characters but praise TFA, I can’t help but roll my eyes. If the TFA characters weren’t connected to the original cast, I am pretty certain things wouldn’t have been the same. And I give them that they acted well enough.

Honestly, Ep. VIII has me excited just about three things - Rian Johnson directing, behind-the-scenes photos of an A-Wing cockpit, and the possibility that it will feature a large space battle. I don’t care about the characters one bit.

Not even during the Prequels I could catch myself being so completely uncaring about the fate of the “trio” of Star Wars protagonists. Which really saddens me, but… it’s how it is.

And, btw, I know EVERYONE is loving the Vader scene (as did I) but I’ll be the guy to throw a huge monkey wrench in the Vader-orgy going on:
With one force pull, he grabbed 5-6 blasters. Couldn’t he have done the exact same thing with the plans that the soldier was holding? One force pull and he’s got them. Done.

This statement is as inane and simplistic as it gets. That’s like saying "if it weren’t Star Wars, you wouldn’t care at all.

Well, duh. No shit.

If it were Star Trek, I would barely care. If it were The Walking Dead, I wouldn’t care at all. But, in the end, it’s Star Wars and that’s the primary reason why ANY of us care.

Riiiiiihgt. So the dark lord of the Sith needs someone to point an arrow at them and say “these are the plans you’re looking for?” He could use the force, read their minds and find the trooper that’s the MOST frantic. Or, hell, the one who’s thinking “I’m holding the plans in my hand.” He’s the one with the plans. Done.

TFA wasn’t perfect but neither is RO. I’d argue the problems with RO are more glaring than TFA. And some, like this, you have to think about a little more.

Furthermore, Rey, Ren, Finn, Poe, and BB-8 were all fantastic characters (played by fantastic actors) independent of any connection to the old characters.

Assuming he knew that one Rebel had the plans, maybe he was focused on the fight. Maybe he was using all his powers to not get shot. Maybe he thought the guy was trapped and wouldn’t be able to get the plans through. Maybe he was overconfident he’d get there before they got away. Maybe the Rebels got lucky.

Why didn’t he just use the Force to stop the Tantive from escaping? Why did they waste time going on foot? Why didn’t his Star Destroyer just destroy the Rebel flagship? Why didn’t the Death Star shoot it?

Point is: who cares? Things happen how they happen.

That type of thinking can enable me to poke a million hopes in the OT as it suffers from that type of writing too. Even if those films didn’t have shit like that in them you’re overthinking it. It’s a chaotic encounter in a narrow, dark hallway. Vader was probably fixated on blast deflection and just trying to kill everyone instead of devoting useful mental resources to think about one Rebel.
