Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - on VHS (Released)

Not sure what the interest would be like for this, if any, but I came across a VHS of Goblet of Fire in a lot a couple of months back and only got around to capturing it today.

I was surprised to find this cause I had never seen any other listings with it or even any info on it. Unlike Revenge of the Sith which was primarily in PAL regions for VHS, it looks like this never got a release anywhere else. Not sure if this was even in Australia cause the cover doesn’t have any AU ratings on it, just the NZ sticker, so it may have even been just a New Zealand release.

Content wise, it’s not anything special, just the film in 4:3 format, though it’s interesting how it still has that “This is DVD” promo before the film, even though it would have been 5 years then since it was made.

As all the Harry Potter films were shot in 35mm spherical, the Full Screen versions of those are partially open matte (with the exception of HP3). Goblet of Fire 4:3 version is also open matte, so there will be more image on top and bottom than the widescreen version.
Could you post some screenshots of the VHS?

Not sure how much of it was Open Matte, the cropping was quite obvious in some shots:

Yep, it’s open matte alright; same as the Full Screen DVD. Opened on top and bottom, but cropped at the sides.

A VHS version sounds interesting… I’d like to do some comparisons with my DVD copy.

Probably, since VHS seems to have stuck around in New Zealand longer than it did in other countries. I remember seeing VHS cassettes on sale in places like Foodtown even as recently as 2009.

Didn’t pay attention to VHS then, our family had moved onto DVD way before, would have been interesting to see how many people ended up getting the VHS at the end.

Still gotta make the DVD encode for it, hoping to get that up by next week or so.

Uploading it to Dropbox now, should be up within 6 hours, so PM then if you’re want it.

EDIT: Don’t bother PMing right now, Dropbox apparently doesn’t like heavy activity on public links and prohibited it now, so I’ll have to find another way to upload them. A contact of mine has Amazon Drive, which I’ll try and put it on ASAP

Wow, this is amazing! I didn’t know HP 4 would be released on VHS (and only in New Zealand).

Me neither, till I saw it in a random Trademe listing and then found no results on Google about a VHS release.

I know this post is from 4 years ago but I was wondering if you still had the VHS? I would be interested to know if you would be willing to sell it?

*Sorry, just noticed there was another post

Yep, I still have the tape, but didn’t have any plans to sell it anytime soon, wouldn’t even know what its value would be if I did.

No problem! I have looked everywhere and you are the only person to say that you have a physical copy of it. I know they were only released in New Zealand. If you happen to see a copy anywhere could you pick it up for me? (I am located in Canada and cannot find a copy anywhere). I would pay all shipping and any extra fees for your time.

They sell for 500+ dollars it’s the most sought after rarity among VHS collectors I searched for a copy for 6 years and found it in a 500vhs bulk lot I got for free had to drive across the country to get it.

hey can you pm me the link please???

My email is jakewyattpsn@gmail.com.

What link were you after? 😃

I was after the mega link. 😄

Oh that was the other guy with the mega link. I have photos of my VHS goblet of fire. Sadly I have no idea how to upload the VHS to the computer as my vhs to disc burner was broken by my niece putting coins inside of it 😢 haven’t been able to find an affordable one since. They sell for like 300-500 the burners.

If your in New Zealand I’ll sell you my copy along with the first 3 HP on VHS. For $200 buy now on trade me and I can provide afterpay but I couldn’t sell any cheaper as they are worth a few grand. That’s about as good as I could offer 😃

I’m pretty sure they had an early dvd print aswell that was displayed in open Matt you may be able to find this one to watch online and it will be the same image croping and sizes as the VHS version.

Little bump here.

I’ve done a new V2 capture of this tape. I wasn’t really impressed with my last one looking back at it, mainly from the smearing artifact that was present from my DVD recorder passthrough (for S-Video out). I upgraded my VCR to a S-VHS deck sometime ago, but my old capture device would have massive warping making it useless without the DVD recorder, so I kept it.

An example of the smearing:

Recently I changed my capture device to a Hauppauge USB-Live 2 (as a recommendation from someone) which plays much better with my S-VHS deck, so I could remove the DVD recorder and the smearing it added. There may be a tiny bit of warping but nothing noticeable, certainly the best I’ll get without forking $$$$ on an external TBC.

Since there’s no smearing now, I’ve done a Progressive encode for the film itself this time also to help it quality-wise while keeping it for single layer DVD, while everything else is Interlaced. Certainly better than the original where I actually captured it deinterlaced already and got reinterlaced it. lol

A tiny little bit of combing can be seen in spots, mostly on the top of the frame, if you pause it which I was gonna blend, but it made the picture more softer than I expected, so I left it untouched. I played it back on my CRT and it looks fine, so I didn’t need to do it.

I also noticed that the DVD recorder step had cropped the sides in my original capture, so that’s opened up in this new V2 capture. I was gonna use Framecompare but the site has refused to work for myself for months now, so here’s both:

Original:

Version 2:

So if there’s anyone that’s wanting a replacement for this, feel free to send a DM. I stopped responding to requests in threads ever since I got no emails (for some reason) for at least a months worth on the Chronologically LOST HD thread.

I’ve also redone the Revenge of the Sith tape as well which I’ll post an update on there later.
