Yeah you have to go to the language options on the 2004 DVD menu on the Dagobah themed menu to see the extended lift up of R2-D2 poking his head in the window. It’s totally re-framed but I think it works better in that framing too.

Nice, as well as Darth Vader and Luke duel; but they are on ESB DVD - that’s why I haven’t found them before! 😄 I guess it it’s possible to use them somewhere, along with other DVD menus - a new idea, I like it!

Also, I guess if there are some live action sequence from official videogames that could be used as well - with same characters of the saga, of course.

Thanks for the links; now I’m watching other clips, and I think many are from the same sources. I’ll take a look at these tomorrow.

How would any of these be included?

R2-D2 and C-3PO meet BB-8 in a desert environment O2 commercial (00:32) *****
BB-8 hacking a computer, while Chewie waits for him Verizon TV spot (00:21) ****
BB-8 piloting an X-wing Jeep commercial (00:15) ****

You could take a look at the commercials on youtube; frankly I saw TFA once when it came out, so I can’t be sure if/where to put these, but the quality is very good, and * maybe * could fit in the story… that’s why I put them in the evaluation list; but I think it could be OK to use them, it’s a fan edit, after all!

UPDATE

I finally found the Episode 3 ‘extended Count Dooku duel’ from the videogame… it’s just 3s shot, but, as it’s Christopher Lee, and it fits quite well, I decided to put it in; original quality is low, so final result isn’t perfect - it’s in color, at least - but we are talking about a 2005 PS2 game, and the cinematic sequence is also windowboxed… you find the test clip here, as well as in the first post!

i think there was a landing scene at tatooine from EPVI by change the menu in the german dvd…but don´t sure…
will all the movies have german language with german subs in the deleted scenes?
and do you add the sandstorm scene in EPVI?i like them…😃

I think DVD menus are the same all over the world - there are three (or four?) each, and they appear at random AFAIK - but I’m pretty sure there is a way in hardware player to choose (or change) them.

Foreign language: this is a thing I’m thinking about since the beginning… it will be hard just with the english track, so I thought to use only that. I’d like to add subtitles for the whole movie + deleted scenes in other languages, but it will be really hard… 😦

Are the menu items truly deleted scenes, or were they just crafted for the DVDs?

As for the additional scenes being added, there are complications for certain. I am with benduwan, I would love to have the most complete edit possible. But there are a few little problems. For instance, the opening scene with Luke on Tatooine looking at the battle overhead has two deleted scenes: the black and white one revealed back in 1996, and the 2011 scene revealed on the BDs. Though they share some of the same shots, most are different takes and angles. I have enjoyed combining the two of them in black and white to try to make the most complete version. There are two versions of Luke and C-3PO in the up close speeder with the fake backdrop. One scene was found in Empire of Dreams. It starts a little sooner and carries a bit of dialogue not carried in the version found on the BDs. It is a different take, but can easily be spliced in when the shot changes briefly to the desert in front of them. There are several other bits and pieces, and I have thoroughly looked at them all, particularly with ANH. I can definitely offer suggestions for anything missing.

Thank you for doing this. I have always wanted to see as extended a version as possible. I too care much less about quality and just want to see a complete extended edit.

Yep, you can choose them by pressing the buttons 1, 2 or 3 of your remote during the warnings at the beginning of the disc, if I remember correctly.

They were just crafted for the DVDs, here’s an article about it.

Once there is the script, in where there is a call for each scene, I think it could be always possible to do two (or three versions), as I suggested some posts before; one with the best quality clips, and another with (almost all) the others discarded for the former reinserted, including the b&w.

Forgot to mention: if there are alternative take/different angle, with finished effect, that could not affect the overall quality of the final result, would you prefer that it is used instead the shot seen in the movie?

Bewy, thanks for the link; it is really informative.

Menus: I knew they were not deleted scenes, BUT… they always could be used to replace some bad shot in the deleted scene - Wampa comes to mind.
Sadly, the best ones have the written all on them, BUT… I managed to fix it, and result, albeit imperfect, is nice; I used the duel menu to make a simple intro, that I’d like to attach before any film, along with the BD logo carved in the stone with a lightsaber.

The only provlem I have with this test clip is the PAL speedup. Really hope this will be corrected in the final version.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

If possible, I would prefer an edit with alternate shots/takes when available. You sent me a PM indicating I had a truncated shot. I truthfully may have done that a few times. If you find that is the case, let me know and I’ll try to get you the better versions anything that was not clipped correctly.

Guys, what’s about Dooku PS2 insertion? Should it be used?

If it’s the only problem, I’ve fixed it:

Investigating the possibility of using DVD menus as shot replacement; right now I’m working on Darth Vader and Luke duel on Cloud City; it should be ready later today.

Me too… discovering so many alternate takes (thanks also to you), it could be a great oppurtunity to have another version - we are not tired enough to see theatrical, 1997, 2004 or 2011 versions, aren’t we? 😉

I truthfully may have done that a few times.

My fault; it has truncated audio, but present in the final movie, hence not important.

I mean obviously the quality of video is much lower but your incorporation of it into the movie is perfect. It fits very nicely.

The menu looked great too. Looking forward to many more surprises!

Strange, can be true… but not worse than EP4 CGI Jabba - any version! 😄
I do think that is a nice “alternate take” to add to the project, that is becaming not only an “add deleted scenes to get a longer version”, but more as an alternative version…

Now shoot me, but I also thought to make a DVD with different angles, where alternate take is the main track, and original take is the second track… if only I could be able to do that… maybe someone more skilled could chime in!

Still hoping to find a good audio editor - it is really needed; and a graphic designer to correct some missing or unfinished effects…

Now, I’m going to test an alternate take of R2 and 3PO entering Jabba’s palace… wish me luck! 😄

Not being out of order it’s ok.

But you understand I pointed out that the shot where R2-D2 lifts himself up to yoda’s hut was the only bit of deleted footage?

I don’t mind the menu shot but I would not dream of using that personally. It feels weird.

Maybe, who knows? 😄

Ronster said:

Understood. But actually IT was in the movie (around 54:30); I made a quick comparison between the movie and the overlaid DVD menu: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/192756 - as you can see, this part of the shot is useless, because is smaller, and full of writings that could not be deleted perfectly; if you are talking about R2 that is “walking” around Yoda’s house (and it’s clearly impossible he will reach the window from that point, in the movie), yes, this is not in the movie, but it’s a recreation, so, if it’s “accepted”, any other part could be, as well. I mean, if GL made 4 different versions of his OT, why we, making a fan edit, are not allowed to use unortodox sources? I remember there is at least a SW edit where Padmé is alive, and her clip is taken from another movie… it’s canon? No! But it works, so… let’s have fun! 😄

I don’t mind the menu shot but I would not dream of using that personally. It feels weird.

If you talk about the one with Darth Vader and Luke duel on the bridge, yes, I agree, it was just a test clip, I had fun making it, understood something new, and, apart a nice (IMHO) intro, it will be useless in this project perspective. But, for example, the other shot, where Luke meets his father, with a 3D zoom in, is nice and, to me, doesn’t seem out of place, in comparison to the original static shot (repeated some frames after it); it’s a bit of “fresh air”, and, again, in comparison with bad CGI (EP4 Jabba) or bad practical effects (Taun Taun), it’s better. My 2c, as usual, as much it could worth.

Now, to let this project be open for future variations/versions etc., I think it could be better to render full screen scenes (4:3 and 16:9 SD) to be full screen 16:9 1920x1080; then, they could be cropped to have the same 2.35:1 aspect ratio of the movie, or left untouched, and get a variable aspect ratio version - like The Dark Knight, for example… sooo, the final versions * could * be:

  1. Best quality color scenes only, image cleaned and upscaled to 1080p 2.35:1, audio restored, using alternate takes where available
  2. All the previous, plus others with lower quality (including b&w), partially unfinished effects and/or missing audio, with fullscreen where available.

Probably the best path to follow is to make the second, and then try to clean as much scenes as possible, and use them to make the first.

Now I think I have almost all deleted scenes, shots, pieces, needed to start the project; need a new computer, though, because I can’t wait months just for rendering time!

Thanks for the corrections, everything is right now!

About the clip: don’t know… you are right, the scene doesn’t need a correction, is perfect “as is”… but, from another point of view… yes, it’s just that; another point of view - not mine, the camera! 😄 Should another take be used instead of the original, even if perfect? And when? Same angle? Or a different angle? Or zoomed in/out? What’s about dialogs? Who decides?

Some serious questions arise along the previous one… which cut, color grading, and audio track to use? Which changes to leave, and which to revert?

Why I have decided to do this? I know, right now, that I will spend so much time in this project… I don’t want to take a given cut, whichever it is, leave it untouched, put the deleted scenes, untouched as well, at the right place, and stop. Many did this. Too easy. 😄 I must find something difficult, and different… for what reason, I’m still asking myself!
