It is still a great story, but once the wow factor is gone, you realize that Empire is the best. No question.

CGI killed ANH.

Yeah, but what ANH has in droves that I love is Alec Guinness as a regular character. ESB is still the best, but I love Obi Wan.

*That's not true! That's impossible!!!*

CGI has not killed STAR WARS(again I don't like referring to it as ANH), prehaps it killed the SE OT, the PT, and George Lucas but not Star Wars. No the Special effects don't give you the wow factor that they did, but neither does CGI(imho).

Star Wars began the whole Saga. All the other movies, books, comic books, board games, computer games, cds, tapes, DVDs, toys and this site owe their existence to the original Star Wars. I like the Story, the pacing, and the music just I little more than I like Empire. And nothing in the rest of the Saga beats the battle of Yavin(the original one not the screwed with version of the SE). If I have to be in the minority, so be it.

Hey, Warbler, why is the original "Star Wars" so good? It is with with rotoscoping, soundFX, choreography, direction, effects, previz, story, and just about everything. There is no argument!!!

I agree ... on both counts. (I refuse to call Star Wars "A New Hope," Episode IV, or any other revisionist name.)

The original Star Wars film is a classic, and I'd take its visuals over any modern CGI. Star Wars had its own style ... CGI *is* a style, and it's not exclusive to Star Wars.

ESB tells a more involved, more compelling story than Star Wars, so that's why it's the better film. The original Star Wars ranks very close behind Empire on the scale of greatness, though.

Er.. Lucas was going to call it that originally but the studio thought it would confuse people. Besides, Starwars is the Universe. Something has to distinguish Star Wars Episode IV, A New Hope, from the other 49, 999, 999 things in the StarWars franchise.

Yeah? And he was originally going to call the third film "Revenge of the Jedi," but you don't see people using that title, do you?

And please don't give me Lucas' new spiel about purposely mis-naming RotJ to thwart bootleggers, because it's a lie ... it's re-writing history. So is calling these movies by titles they weren't released under.

Bottom line: the film I saw a zillion times in 1977 & 1978 was simply called "Star Wars."

But it was released under "A New Hope" in 78, 79, 80, 82, and 97.

It has had once release as just "Star Wars" but several as "A New Hope."

I never saw the title "A New Hope" until around or after the release of Empire. I saw the film far more times in the theater without the revisionist titles than with.

Just curious: Did you ever see Star Wars when it was just called Star Wars?

I'm in agreeance with Warbler. The original 1977 Star Wars is the best movie in the series. I'll take those goofy cantina monster masks over some excessive CGI orgy ANYDAY.

But... there are no Goofy monsters cantina or CGI orgies in the original ESB.

Jeten San Hett, Why are you mad?

As to why Star Wars is so good? I can't put my finger on it. It just seems that everything in the movie(script, story, actors, charactors, sets, special effects, music, makeup, etc) comes together like magic. The same can be said for Casablanca(imho the best movie ever made). Empire is great but the magic just isn't there like it is for Star Wars.

Chaltab: throughout my childhood the movie was known as Star Wars. That is the original name, and I'm sticking to it. The hell with ANH!

I'm really bad at picking favorites. I usually pick Star Wars. It was the last one of the old trilogy I saw. My favorite as a kid was Jedi, but after awhile it started boring me. It was the first I started memorizing lines from (Vader's taunt to get Luke out of hiding to be exact). I still greatly enjoy the space battle and duel though.

It's probably forever a tie between Empire and Star Wars.

The Empire Strikes Back.

When I was a kid, RotJ was my favorite; but I think RotJ is everyone's favorite when they're a kid.

Perhaps it has something to do with realizing more an more as you get older how implausible the Ewoks defeating a legion of the best StormTroopers is.

You should watch the ROTJ Directors comm on the DVD..or something on one of the DVD's..coz ol' Lucas says that actually the Ewoks are getting their asses whooped.
Which is true...the Ewoks aren't actually beating the Empire!
It's more luck with Rebels, and Chewie having one of the AT-ST's that makes the real difference, that way enabling Han to gain acces into the Bunker!

Or some shit like that anyway!!!

Ohhh Bollox...the Ewoks are shit and that's that

Trying to justify the furry fuckers is no use!!

Even my girlfriend said that the Ewoks looked fake after seeing them on TV the other day. She was one of those who loved the little shits the first time round! Ahhh so cute!!

Cute don't beat an almighty Empire in my books!

"It is sort of blasphemous. Here I am at a website, desperately fighting for the release of a DVD that I will fast forward through if I ever got it."

//makes note to remove chapter points and P-UPs for fast forwarding from my next version.

"Sorry, I think it is a matter of opinion."

Why do you keep taking these posts the wrong way?

"Hey, Warbler, why is the original "Star Wars" so good? It is with with rotoscoping, soundFX, choreography, direction, effects, previz, story, and just about everything. There is no argument!!! "

Great, now someone else is making a bigger deal out of this than is necessary.

See this is a hard question for me. All three have a different flavor to them.

ANH was epic and had constant movement from place to place, revealing just a dab of every aspect of the universe while showing a great story line that covered up an even greater story line to come.

ESB was dark and expanded on existing characters much more, while introducing some new ones as well. You saw that Darth Vadar was merely human instead of just a two dimensional bad guy (putting his helmet on facing from behind him, and later announcing that he was Luke's father). Lots of tragedy as well as twists and turns throughout.

ROTJ had a more lighthearted feel about it with the Ewoks and celebration at the end, but with all of the battles that took place in it (Jabba's palace, the Death Star, Luke/Vadar/Emperor fight), it definately balanced the tone.

If I were forced to pick one, I'd go with Empire Strikes Back, mainly because I like darker films. But honestly, I still like the other two just as much.

Return Of The Jedi is my favorite, but i know that ESB is the best and I'm going to have to accept it.
