Star Wars saga - Extra Extended Edition (1080p) (* unfinished project / WIP *) — Page 2

I found unofficial Extended Editions of all seven Star Wars movies on a certain popular Russian torrent site which I will not name in risk of banishment.

Unfortunately, the quality isn’t that good and the audio is only in Russian for some films like Episode V and VI.

Would still be interesting, though.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

AFAIK, ADigitalMan released the three prequel episodes; I’ll use them as main guidelines to know where to insert deleted scenes; the others in the mysterious russian site could always serve for the same purpose.

UPDATE

  • Found a new Rogue One korean trailer; I think it’s * possible * to use one of its brief shot, to replace a similar, unfinished shot of the EP6 deleted scene found on BD, “Jerjerrod’s Conflict”, the final one with the empty screen.
  • Found further EP7 shots on trailers, teasers, TV spots, not found in the final movie, or different takes etc. - don’t know how much footage will be proved effectively cut/different, in total, but an educated guess could be around one minute, if not more, taken in account there are around two dozens of them, and each shot is few seconds long.
  • Thinking to use “non canon” footage found on some TV spots - quality is very good, and scenes are plausible… got just to find out where to place them! With just three spots, total time is around one minute and half!

An audio editor is still needed!

By the way, that mysterious Russian site is actually RuTracker.

I just didn’t mention it in fear of banishment, but since other users always mention it’s name nowadays, I think it’s same.

We all would like to see actual Star Wars footage, I think… (^^,)

Here is a quick first pass, without any noise reduction or color fixes. This footage has always been in color, but I thought it was a good idea to see how close it could come (automatically) from B&W input.

So, how were the Russian extended editions?

I didn’t check on them because I think they would be of pretty low quality and my space is running low.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

I know this might be odd… has anyone tried the color match tool on similar frames that have been reduced to black and white, then applied the algorithm to the deleted scenes? I understand it probably won’t work, but worth the try.

To which color matching tool do you refer? That could be helpful for me 😃
I uploaded another test, the trailer for ANH. I wrote a new script, hopefully it can come a bit closer.

@Swift S. Lawliet:
I have now EP 4, 5, 6, 7 of the russian extended versions; quality if low, are only in Russian, extended scenes are untouched and not all present, some could be uncorrectly placed (for example the Wampa attack on EP5); nevertheless, they could be used as rough guidelines to scene placement; for EP 1, 2, 3, I rely on ADigitalMan extended version, even if, at the time, the BD scenes were not available; benduwan made an ultimate cut of EP 4, and it will be my main guideline; pittrek send me long excerpts of EP 4, 5, 6 with deleted scenes reincorporated, and I’ll follow these, too. At the end, I’ll ask your help to place further scenes.

@nightstalkerpoet:
Yes, it is possible; to achieve perfect results, the reference scene must have the same frame size (NOT resolution); I mean, if the reference has not cropped size, it could be upscaled to HD and used for input; if the scene is similar, but not the same, or has different size, results will vary. Further tests are needed. Any help with locating same/similar shot to use as reference is really appreciated!

@MWilson:
An avisynth script like colourlike, or there are other softwares that could do that. Today I reviewed the EP 6 deleted scenes included in the Rinzler ebooks, and luckily the b&w ones could be not used, as they are uninteresting or alternate takes, BUT the Rancor scene has shots not seen before, that will be great to reinsert! Your chromajig works well, but I think it’s impossible to reach good result with automatic colorize tools… I think that doing manual settings is the only way to go, possibly following a reference image/clip.

Actually, what about combining the methods? Using automated color tools to add color information into the picture, then using color match to adjust those colors?

Perhaps someone familiar with Matlab could help with this? Looks like it could be pretty amazing for establishing a base image to match from. http://www.cs.huji.ac.il/~yweiss/Colorization/

Ryan McAvoy did a rough and incomplete edit I loved called The Lost Workprint. It moved since scenes around a little liberally but it was a fantastic watch. It could be a good guide. I also made modifications to it to extend it further I think you should consider. I could send my copy of this extension.

Any help is really welcome, so yes, your version will be appreciated!
About scene replacement: I would like to put them in the exact order, if possible. But I’m too lazy to read the whole scripts…

Colorize: I made further testings, both using MWilson script, and trying to color match a B&W clip with a reference clip or image… results are poor… the only positive thing I found is that the B&W scenes are few, some are useless or are the same of the movie, or have a corresponding color scene; what remain are some snippets here and there, for a grandtotal time of around a minute or so… hoping MWilson will find a way to colorize them by hand, with better results!

Now I’ve finished to review EP 4 Rinzler ebook scenes, first topic (and the deleted scene database as well) updated; tomorrow I’ll try to take a look at the remaining scenes.

I think I have all the most important deleted scenes of all the movies; maybe some little snippet remain to be found in some trailer - it will be great to find other few interesting seconds here and there - but, apart those, it’s almost time to start to work seriously on EP 1!

Empire Strikes Back is a very different Beast in fact there are scenes that were not created and or filmed cut and re-arranged. The first and third act is where most of the shuffling occurs.

The rest of the films should be simple enough to simply extend with missing shots without any re-arrangement.

I think there are 2 instances of re-arrangement in Star Wars as far as I can tell and those are the the Falcon Blasting out of Mos Eisley and the Death Star landing bay. But they are self contained re-arrangements. I think there is one to do with the pilots too (wedge Antilles) battle of yavin.

Empire Strikes Back is really shuffled up not saying it does not work in it’s theatrical or special edition state but that the context of the film is not always easily apparent and you need to look beyond seeing a deleted scene and look for missing elements that were planned to understand the context of missing sequences and the order of scenes and how things would have been slightly different. Just saying that if you really want to see an extended cut of Empire it would be quite a bit different to all the rest of the films in the Saga in how that works. And it will take a lot of your time trying to figure out what goes where and how it works and not having the footage available to do this also. But the full cut is probably only 5 minutes Longer in a very different order localised to sequences and the overall narrative and shots in a different context.

I’d also suggest not trying to include all deleted scenes or alternate takes.

@Ronster:
thanks for the informations! I’m aware there are many scenes/shots not even filmed, or lost, or (probably) hold in some secret place, ready for 40th (or 50th) anniversary… who knows?

We could only use only material effectively available; even using every single scene and shot, any film will be not longer than 20m each but, as you also suggested, not every scene will be used; I’m trying to compile a detailed list of what will not be include, because it’s irrelevant, or technically inferior, what it could be included, with a little of work, and what could be put back in the film “as is” - like almost all Episode 1, 2, 3 DVD deleted scenes.

Another thing I find amusing is to find out every day some little snippet of a shot here and there; but I think almost everything usable is listed in the first page - and, of course, in the * database *.

Just to tease the fans of extended editions - as, of course, I am - I found scenes that I’ve never seen before, but I must admit I’m not a die hard fan like many here are; that’s way a little help is always welcome!

Between the others, latest finds that I think are interesting:

  • Luke and Leia kiss on Bespin
  • Few shots inside the Death Star corridors
  • Luke answer at Ben’s hut

plus a lot of Episode 7 shots found on trailer and * supposedly * not found in the movie - work in progress!

UPDATES

  • Finished to rate any scene/shot I have available
  • Found new footage from unknown sources

I want to thank again benduwan and pittrek; their help is fundamental for this project!

Still looking for an audio editor who would like to help; also, a graphic editor will be useful as well!

Re: Empire

My general thoughts are that if the filmed scoring sessions by John Williams were unearthed then we would actually find most of the missing material in a cohesive order to earlier proposed final cut before the budget went south and certain decisions had to be made on what was feasible in both time and money. I am holding out for those scoring sessions to become available even with storyboard cards or animatics. I asked the right person I think even though he was a bit at odds with who should dictate what… music editor or a film editor? (post the music being scored mind).

This would not really apply so much to any of the others.

Can you elaborate on These?

Were in relation with my previous sentence “I found scenes that I’ve never seen before”; and I can add now “on ‘usual’ places like DVD, BD and Rinzler ebooks deleted scene”.
I’m quite sure it is possible to find out other snippets inside documentaries, behind the scenes etc. - but, as I haven’t seen the movies dozen times, if I see a shot, I must check it anytime if it’s in the movie, or modified, or not at all, but I have to search the whole movie each time… that’s why a Star Wars super expert is welcome!

Well I am not a Star Wars Super Expert but you need to look at a few documentaries also.

You need to look at the original Making of Star Wars (1977) there are a few shots in that.

You will find a better alternate take of Han Running up the Ramp on to the Falcon from a different angle. You also get shot’s of Landspeeders driving through Mos Eisley. Tie Fighters being blown apart on blue screen. Deleted Y-wing fly over.

Deleted Magic I can’t seem to find a good quality version of it now days has cool stuff in it too. It has the Landspeeder display when R2-D2 is located, so I don’t know where that came from either originally as it’s a compilation from various sources.

The Best Deleted Footage for Empire is in some of the trailers although the best one for cut footage is not in cinemascope. You won’t be able to use the take of Vader force lifting and choking Luke off the Gantry Crane and throwing him down the shaft either. As it was obviously changed 😃

There is an extended snippet of R2-D2 lifting himself up to the window of Yoda’s hut from the 2004 DVD menu of Empire

Empire Strikes Back SFX documentary has some alternate audio.

don’t use the shot of Vader communicating with Luke in Return of the Jedi lightsaber construction scene. Vader in his meditation chamber was from Empire Strikes Back.

That about covers All that I can think of at the momment.

I think I have it from Rinzler ebook IIRC

Got them, but they are quite rough.

Tie Fighters being blown apart on blue screen. Deleted Y-wing fly over.

Those are missing!

Landspeeder display, uh? Interesting… 😄

Got to find them anyway! May you tell me something more?

There is an extended snippet of R2-D2 lifting himself up to the window of Yoda’s hut from the 2004 DVD menu of Empire

I just watched all the VOB menu file of my PAL DVD, but it isn’t there… maybe it’s only on NTSC DVD?

Empire Strikes Back SFX documentary has some alternate audio.

May you explain this?

don’t use the shot of Vader communicating with Luke in Return of the Jedi lightsaber construction scene. Vader in his meditation chamber was from Empire Strikes Back.

I know, but it’s soo cool… anyway, don’t you think one powerful as Darth Vader may have more than one meditation chamber? 😄

That about covers All that I can think of at the momment.

That’s food for thought! Thanks!!!

A couple of shots but alternate audio of Vader striking the walls with Lightsaber and good quality deleted explosion,

Yeah you have to go to the language options on the 2004 DVD menu on the Dagobah themed menu to see the extended lift up of R2-D2 poking his head in the window. It’s totally re-framed but I think it works better in that framing too.
