Sorry for going off topic a bit, but I thought it was worth mentioning here. If you’ve heard about Shelley Duvall’s appearance on Dr. Phil this week, you know she’s not in the best of shape. (I couldn’t bear to watch after seeing the promo.)

The controversy over Dr. Phil exploiting her mental health issues aside, Vivian Kubrick has started a go fund me page to try and help Shelley.
https://www.gofundme.com/shelley-duvall
I’m just as wary of online scams as the next guy, but you can verify this from Vivian’s twitter, as well as that of Lee Unkrich, who’s the owner of the Overlook Hotel website, as well as being the director of some Pixar movie about toys I’ve never heard of. 😉

JEDIT:Crap! Now I have reason to doubt the money is going to be used as intended. 😦

“Don’t sympathize with Shelley!” said Stan the man.

That doesn’t have anything to do with her current health problems.

Hold your horses, I didn’t say that Stan is the reason for her current state. It is just the first thought I had when I read Vivian’s sudden deep concern about Shelley. And you seem so sure of yourself - I have to believe you.

Sorry, there have been people crawling out of the woodwork elsewhere on the net regurgitating every myth that has grown up over the decades about how Shelley was treated, and attacking a man who no longer is around to defend himself. It really sucks.

Actually, Shelley, herself, defended Kubrick’s “treatment” on the set:

YouTube: Flashback: Shelley Duvall and Stanley Kubrick Battle Over ‘The Shining’

“If it hadn’t been for that, you know, volley of ideas, and sometimes butting your heads together, it wouldn’t have come out as good as it did. And it also helps get the emotion up and the concentration up because it builds up anger, actually, and you get more out of yourself. And he knew that. And he knew he was getting more out of me by doing that. … And it’s just the necessary turmoil to get out of it that you want out off it. … And I find I really respect him and really like him, both as a person and as a director.”

I’m with Shelley on this one. When “Dr.Phil fell back to platitudes and talked over her, as she demonstrated her competence to know what she once looked like and what she looks like today (“grotesque”), I’d say it is Dr. Phil who is mentally ill:

Shelley Duvall’s Controversial ‘Dr Phil’ Interview

I’d say Shelley should consult with a real doctor, a medical doctor, who also knows nutrition and deficiencies that may cause the body to malfunction. And with Shelley still in her right mind, I hope she and her agent negotiated a good cut from the TV show’s take.

You go girl! 😉

I know that documentary by heart. 😃

Vivian shot nearly 40 hours of behind the scenes footage for that, but any scenes of Stanley and Shelley having polite conversation on set probably wasn’t as compelling. People have exaggerated the conflict we do see into something on the level of Christian Bale blowing up at that guy on the Terminator Salvation set.

Silverwook, good news, the ‘lost’ print from Canadia has turned up, and I’m scraping some money together to get it shipped to the scanner in the US.

On that, the scan of your Shining Print is completed, but I do not have any drives left to send to the scanning facility, or funds for the second print to be scanned. If people are interested in seeing both the prints scanned, let me know. Nothing would be going to me, it would be going to the person doing the scanning for me in the US. They need an SSD for the scanner to be able to continue scanning prints on my behalf. The one I had donated to them from my own pocket two years ago needs replacing, and I simply can’t afford to replace it myself at the moment.

From what I heard Stanley approved of everything shot and everything that ended up in the documentary. There is one wild fan theory that the documentary was really an extension of the film. I saw one guy show parallels between the documentary and the film.

He suggested that some of the subtext of the film was about the Native American genocide and both Shelley and Scatman were Stanley’s representations of that, hence why he was playing the big bad American on set and being mean to only the two of them.

At any rate I would say any mental health issues Shelley has now would not be as a direct result of her experience on that film. The people in the town she lives in have known for at least 10 - 15 years Shelley has been unwell (I spoke online to one of her neighbours), many have tried their best to look out for her and just make sure she is okay.

Unfortunately the fade is severe, the colour and contrast have mostly gone, if we fed it through a scanner with an adjustable light source and better dynamic range, we could get a bit more out of it, but not really enough to warrant it. We would need a less faded print to start with.

However, the open matte lets us see a lot more, and there is just enough colour to know what colour things should have been, like this shot for instance…

The ProRes file for that exact seqment is 8GB, if anyone wants to take a crack at colour recovery, PM me and I can send you the 8GB file to play with.

Here is a 16bit TIFF image if anyone wants to try.

I must say even the raw, faded print has a certain style to its colour timing, even if it is all horribly wrong.

Yeah, it has a spooky ‘old photo’ feel to it.

Reminds me of the faded '70’s family photos I have. Certainly more than watchable, and not as bad as I thought it might be. And the tennis ball is a proper yellow for once. 😉

This can certainly be used for any rough patches on the soundtrack of the other print.

Is there any more or less image area as the other print or exactly the same? Also, note the tape marks on the carpet at the very top of the first shot.

I don’t know re the image area, the sample I posted is everything out to the edge.

Here is the same scene with the colour over-saturated to see what is there, the main problem is the lack of contrast left on the print.
