Just got through with a play through of ocarina of time. Damn that game is like a spiritual journey for me. I always have to fight tears at the end. With high definition texture packs and ran at 1080p on project 64 it even looks beautiful.

I’m in the process of acquiring what I need to set up a 120 inch projection screen, and paying this game in hd on it is one of the first things I’m gonna do. It all started when I saw an amazon listing for a used projector that normally runs for about 700 dollars for under 300 used. Native 1080p resolution. Now I’m just going to drop about 45 bucks on a 120 screen and I already have a surround sound system… I’m excited. Probably why I’m talking about it in the wrong thread from getting side tracked.

OOT is a yearly playthrough for me. I love it.

Me as well, Majora’s Mask about every other year too. I like it almost as much, but it’s alot ‘heavier’ so I can’t handle it every year lol. There’s a really good HD texture pack for it too by some guy called Bluedart.

Or you could just get the 3DS version.

If I wanted to pay on a screen that’s a couple inches long sure. But I honestly think the n64 versions with texture packs look better anyway. From what I’ve seen the remakes only upgraded the modes but with the texture packs everything looks beautiful and detailed.

That’s why Nintendo made the XL. Plus resolution doesn’t really matter for a game that old.

I’d say that I actually prefer the original to the version with texture packs. Opinions are weird lol

Well the 3DS version upgraded textures and cleaned up a couple of animations not to mention that can play the game in 3D which is more naturally than one would expect. I think for the price it’s the best version of OoT one can play.

Couldn’t be more wrong about that. Not only do the texture packs make the graphics legitimately HD and detailed, but when you’re playing on a screen that’s plus 60 inches having the graphics generated at a higher resolution (which is much different than upscaling) makes a fuckload of difference.

Here’s something I did up real quick to show this. I don’t have the proportions exactly right, I got the one on the right too small I think but that should actually make it look better. Enhanced texture packs displayed in HD on the left, regular game displayed at N64’s native resolution but resized to the same as the enhanced one. The screenshot I took isn’t a very good example it’s just from the title screen. Not the exact same frame either but close enough.

zelda

I mean if you would rather look at the one on the right, that’s your business I guess lol.

That’s a great texture pack because it keeps the original feel of the game. I’d definitely play with that one.

I actually compiled it myself from two other publicly available texture packs. I’d be happy to share it though just not publicly side it’s just a combination of two other texture packs.

The mm pack my bluedart is heart as well and also very faithful. Just increases the image quality and detail without changing the vibe.

That’s my biggest issue with texture mods and remasters in general.

Still looks like shit either way. It’s not as though we’re talking a modern Morrowind visual overhaul. Now those changes are astronomical.

I weep for my brethren and sisters as well.

EDIT:

Well let me say this so there’s no confusion…looking at it now yes the texture pack looks better than the original. However it doesn’t look good enough to warrant an installation.

You might feel differently if you were playing on a big screen.

You might be right. I run through OoT at least once every two or three years so the next time I do I’ll play it with a texture pack. I just hope one of them fixes Link’s face. Above all I’m glad that OoT made Link’s face not uncomfortable to look at.

Well it doesn’t change the shape but it does make his expressions a lot better.

Good because to overly surprised and the “I’m on the verge of crapping my pants” look while funny at first gets distracting eventually.

I’ll never forget this but my Mom watched me play OoT once and she yelled “It’s just an ocarina! Why are you so amazed by an ocarina?”

Yep, exactly.

I use the Painterly Pack for Minecraft when I play because it keeps the lofi vibe of the game whereas the other popular ones just make it too “HD” and it fucks with it.

Yeah, I agree. It’s still a bit too Sphaxy to me.

Man, they sure got a lot of use out of that Wolfenstein 3D engine. I have no idea what that is.

I wanna say it’s Elder Scrolls: Arena or something similar.
