As promised here are shots 71-80, No DNR:

This is HEVC again, but this time using the MainConcept encoder which should be better than Handbrake.

The cleanup looks great.

This is before additional color work by Dre? I predict we’re going to have a bit of discussion about how green R2’s corridor should be. 😃

That is correct. Dre gave me a single LUT to correct the whole reel, which has been applied here, and then he makes some more shot by shot corrections from there.

I’ll let you guys and Dre hammer out the final colors while I move on to shots 81-90 which includes a couple of shots with some frames missing in some of the prints…

What green color? 😉

Three more shots are done. Here’s the complete set:

Damn… I’m glad you went for the bluer Artoo panels. Those corrections are very spot on and the consistency between shots looks great

It doesn’t hurt to offer help, but it always hurts to disregard those that do.

“Looks great” is an understatement. Those are, without a doubt, the best grade I’ve seen yet.

Absolutely. Please don’t change a thing!

Pretty images.

A bit grainy, though.

LOL!

What specs are you working with?

Well, Mike Verta has stated they’re slightly green/mint, and check out these screengrabs from the Japanese Special Collection laserdisc:

Possibly, though trying a different player might fix it.

Can you recommend a particular player for Mac OS? I’m currently using MPlayer X on my MacBook Pro from 2012. As HEVC decoding is done solely on the CPU, playback is nowhere near realtime (more like 5-6 FPS). Or would you mind uploading future videos in 1080p H264 as well?

This is HEVC again, but this time using the MainConcept encoder which should be better than Handbrake.

This Encoder barely bad, smoothing/killing fine grain and encoding latency. Optimize from grain and 40+Mbps datarate. This 16Mbps bitrate too small in 4K. Previous HB versions 60Mbps sample encodes better and great quality.

small grain
encoding latency

Used MPC-HC from playing/capture the image. (and very old P4 PC. :S)

Thanks

I use VLC on my 2012 MacBook Pro and it played ok for me.

First of all these are just sample videos. Second of all, the whole point of H.265 is that you don’t need such a high bitrate to achieve the same quality as H.264. The Mainconcept Encoder offers quality rates between 1 and 30 where 30 is the best possible quality (unlike Handbrake where closer to 0 is higher quality). This was encoded at 27. The last 4K H.264 Handbrake encodes were encoded at Placebo quality and were still just 20 MB/S. Thirdly, there is no tuning h.265 for grain or anything else. It’s just not an option.

I considered uploading a ProRes version but I don’t think anybody here really wants to download a 3+ GB file for just 48 seconds of video. And I don’t really want to upload it either. It’s way too early to start worrying about the final encode settings, but don’t worry I’ll make sure the quality is as high is possible.

Sorry, I should be more precise. I wasn’t talking about this, I was talking about the green in the scene where R2D2 receives the plans from Leia
