Maybe a little too saturated Reds/Oranges.

yeah i think maybe that might be the only problem i’m not sure there’s anyway around that though

I ended up lowering the overall saturation slightly, but particulary the oranges, and I added a little more red to the skin tones:

I think I liked that one better before the red boost.

You can evidently see the red in the walls.

Nothing was done to that frame, except for a reduction in saturation. Also, no red boost was performed in any of the frames. I fact they are now reduced. Only the skin tones were altered in the frames with the soldiers, making them less orange and more red. There is some magenta noise in the walls, but this is inherent to the print, and varies from frame to frame. This is why it is more apparent in one frame, compared to the other. Other than that, it is exactly the same frame I posted before with a lower saturation. You just compared it to the wrong frame.

The same magenta staining can be found in the bluray:

…and if you look carefully you can also see it in this photo of a screening:

Sadly, nothing can be done about it.

h.264 this time, presented in both 4k and 1080p, DNR and no DNR. The first clip was shots 18-40, this is shots 16-70 and I included Hairy Hen’s stereo mix. I also made a third cleanup pass.

The color is based on the latest LUT that Dre sent me (which was last weekend, so it’s obviously 30 or 40 generations old!)

Thoughts?

Absolutely beautiful. Bravo.

Edit: May I also say I think the saturation levels are at their most pleasing here. Again, truly phenomenal work. Thank you.

I think the clip looked better with some more saturation. The faces of the troops running around the corner look a bit yellow, and the older trooper’s face in the closeup might be better if less red.

Keep 'em coming with the videos; I think they’re really helpful, not to mention nice to see in general.

I’m really digging it. I know work has been done on the color correction/color grading since the LUT used, but has it been decided whether to keep the inconsistency between shots or to unify the color between shots as much as possible? Watching that sample I love how it looks in terms of the quality of the scan and cleanup work, but the varying color really takes you out of the experience, which is not what should be happening. I personally don’t think there’s any problem with making sure that the color between shots is consistent.

Also, not sure if this has been altered in the newer LUTs, but the first shot of the ships seems really blue to me.

The color grading in the video Williarob posted is not the latest. Overall it is too blue. The variation in color is the reason I decided to tweak the colors on a shot by shot basis. The latest color grading is represented by the stills, and the shorter 720p video sample I will be posting soon.

The colours look really nice.
However there are some problems in the DNRed video. Watch closely the white door and the white panels behind R2 - it almost looks like some “mist” going from the bottom to the top. It’s not in the “no DNR” version

I’m just amazed at the upgrade this is over the SSE. Great work everyone!

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

I’m thinking I might abandon the DNR version. I’m just not liking it as much as I thought I would. Would anybody here be too upset? If anybody needs to use scenes for Despecialization, it will be easy enough for them to add the DNR to the shots they need to mix with the blu-ray…

It is always easier to remove detail later than add back in lost detail. I, for one, am fine with going forward with a focus on the most true to source image possible, and let people take the results in other directions if they feel the need to do so down the road.

It can look nice at times, but yeah, it’s more hassle than it’s worth. Let’s just keep things simple: 4k and 1080p versions.

I’m very much interested in the DNR version, but what I’ve seen of the grainy one looks like I could live with it easily. It’s hard to tell having only seen stuff from the first reel, though. There were swaths of the SSE where the grain was just out of control, IMO, and that really hampered my ability to enjoy it. Authenticity is well and good, but at a certain point it just doesn’t look good when you’re watching it on a screen.

Of course, in the event we get a slick official release for the anniversary, I’m on board for grainy with no reservations.

I wouldn’t mind. I’d rather see the time and energy being put into 4k Jedi than a second 4k SW.
