There are some inconsistencies from shot to shot, so my current plan is to use one of the Tech grades, and then tune each shot for consistency, such that for example C-3PO is the same color in each shot.

Remember guys… if we’re coming down to minor brightness/contrast/saturation tweaks, all of those are easily adjustable on our video players or displays. What’s most important for Dr. Dre to get right is the levels between red blue and green (or yellow). (And he has clearly done that)

And it looks like from some of the discussion Dr. Dre, we’re finally coming down to the “light bulb” argument/discussion as people are splitting into the “colder/warmer” camps. I can almost foresee there being 4 separate versions of this project: Degrained/True White, Degrained/Warm, Grainy/True White, and Grainy/Warm.

But if we had to choose just one color correction (and I think really we should, LOL), my argument might sound counter intuitive but it would be for the true white version because adjusting warmth from that “center” is a lot easier to re-encode in “freebie” software than to go from yellow/orange to true white. It’s also a one-pass change to the entire film.

My two cents! 😃

Just to put in my two cents. I watched the Technicolor version sample that you posted and found the contrast and saturation levels to be pretty jarring. Watching it just did not feel right to me and I thought 3po was too vibrant and there was too much detail lost in the blacks. Would much prefer one of the compromise versions that you posted earlier

i think the new compromise images in the two pages nails it. it was hard to see because the image was too small so it looked worse even though it was perfect well done drdre.

I’ve started work on doing the shot by shot correction, and thusfar it’s progressing nicely. I want this film to look like it was printed yesterday, and I’m really satisfied with the results. Here are the first four finished shots. For these shots I specifically focussed on getting the correct colors for the mint colored walls of the Tantive IV, C-3PO’s gold plating, R2-D2’s blue panels, and the rebel soldier’s blue/gray costumes.

I like colors and everything!! In my opinion this is the way to go 😃

Very teasing ! It looks so good and the colors are nicely consistent.

However, I wonder something : if that sample is from one print, souldn’t the inconsistency between shot be considered as “original” and preserved, even if it looks less good ? Unless the inconsistency is from the scanning process ?

That’s difficult to know. The inconsistency may have been caused by the scanning process or it may have been an error in one print, but not in others, or it was part of the original run of Technicolor prints (that I use as a reference), but not other prints, or it was always there. In the end I decided to go the Mike Verta way, and make this look as good as it can look, while being faithful to the original photography.

OK, I’m not sure if the colours are correct but the sample “feels” like a 70’s movie, which is of course a good thing

I don’t think we’ll ever know what the “correct” colors are. Regardless though, this looks undeniably fantastic.

Looks very good, but I’m wondering about these green lines (sorry, I don’t know how to put a picture on this forum), so open this link to see the lines I’m wondering about):

That’s in the print. The color channels are not perfectly aligned.

While this certainly no reliable color reference, the regrade is showing the same vibes as this photo taken of a screening of a super8 print of Star Wars:

Super 8? I don’t see any monsters or lens flares…

So does that mean this print is an IB print?

The colors look great by the way! Thank you for all your work.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

No, this is not an IB print. However, the color references are the same scans of an IB print, that Harmy used for Despecialized 2.5. These scans are not corrected to match the print, so before applying the color grade to the print, I first correct the Technicolor reference scans.

Gotcha. So is the print the red-faded Eastman?

Overall I like those colors. But do the rebel soldiers seem a bit orange to anyone else?
