I don’t know if you’ve noticed but we’re in a Rogue One thread.

I agree and I’m aware that it’s hypocritical of me to talk about TFA when I myself pointed out previously that we’re not in a TFA thread.

With that said, I’ll say that I feel there’s a legitimate discussion to be had about whether or not Rey comes about her abilities too easily. I think she’s written quite well but I can understand how those who disagree would think otherwise. My problem is with the term Mary Sue itself.

And with that said, I’ll stop talking about TFA in this thread.

Max Landis popularized the term, which was taken from some obscure Star Trek fanfic parody. Regardless, pairing a criticism of the first female Main Character in Star Wars with a trope that also takes a woman’s name is rather stupid, if you’re trying not to come off as sexist. And not a great many people respected Landis’ viewpoints until his association with RedLetterMedia came to be.

I think she should have just stuck with the confusion due to Luke’s abilities. Crying sexism seems like she’s trying to compensate due to not having an argument.

Crying sexism because it is a female name is silly, crying sexism because of the way the female name is used is not silly.

I agree though most male Mary Sues are just called overpowered so there’s not a huge difference.

I agree with this. Male characters that are absurdly good are usually criticized by the people that care enough to examine characters, maybe not with the term “Mary Sue”, but they’re still criticized. Most male Mary Sues are in the action movie genre, and the average public really only expects dumb-fun from action movies, so they don’t really think about it. But if you sit down and examine action movies, almost all the leads are Mary Sues. TFA isn’t a dumb-fun action movie, though, so people do examine the characters and the story.

All I wished is that people would examine Luke the same way they do Rey. Terms don’t really bother me but some of the hypocrisy does. With that being said I’m not going to talk about this anymore as this conversation and Star Wars in general is bumming me out.

Uh-oh! Flink has a problem with an incredibly deft, economical and incisive trope designation, used effectively to deride shit writing!
Better stop using it immediately!!!
C’mon, people, fall in line! FLINK’S OFFENDED!!!

We examined them the same way. They are superficially similar due to TFA’s attempt at rehash OT. However, technically they are very different in the important details.

You really should elaborate about that in another thread. If I’m looking for a headache I might just engage with you if I decide not to run through Stranger Things for the third time 😉

EDIT:

The only thing I will say is that the OT didn’t invent the Hero’s Journey so get that shit out of my face.

Ok.

It takes Luke 3 years to awkwardly “Force get” his lightsaber in the snow. A few hours after having touched the very same lightsaber, Rey succeeds in “Force getting” the saber (I really don’t know the english term) in an even more spectacular way (someone else - someone with years of Jedi/proto-Sith training - was also trying to “Force get” the saber, but she easily beats him).

It takes 4 years to Luke to master the Jedi mind trick. He succeeds with Bib, fails with Jabba. Rey fails her first attempt (which occurs only a few hours after being told the existence of the Force) but a few seconds later - for some reasons which are never explained - she succeeds.

Luke almost got killed a few times (sand people, the cantina, the trash compactor, Vader in the trench, etc.) but got saved by someone else (mostly Ben and his Force protection). Rey… hum… well, at one point she’s in danger but she manages to escape (thanks to fast learning Jedi mind trick) or in other scenes she stays alive because she knows how to shoot, to kick ass with a metallic stick, to fly the Falcon, to climb, to bypass electronic devices, to use a lightsaber (just… because the script needs her to use a lightsaber), etc.

Rey might be the most powerful character ever seen in a movie; her only pain is to witness the death of someone she only got to know a few hours. Luke struggles to get a few things done and nevertheless cannot prevent Ben, Beru, Owen or Biggs from dying.

Post this in another thread if you really want to talk about this

There’s no evidence Luke hasn’t been able to grab his saber with the Force before ESB. That’s it’s difficult for him is due to being injured, cold, and hanging upside down. Ditto for the mind trick, which if IIRC, Hutts are supposed to be immune to?

And let’s all continue this in the proper thread?

I tend to see movies first in standard, 3D and finally IMAX 3D

TFA was the only movie I did the pre ticket sales for and I wont be doing it for Rogue One. I’m not even taking off work to see it. But don’t get any ideas; I’m still very pumped to see this movie.

I really dislike 3D feature films, but i also really like a big event feel if i am going to opening night, and IMAX delivers that. (at least in my local theaters that is how it breaks down). So i think i will probably be getting IMAX 3D tickets for opening night. and then if i go again (of course!), i will choose the standard showing down the street.

I didn’t used to be that big into opening night, but its a fun excuse to do something out of the usual these days, but only for a select few movies that is!

One also doesn’t have to worry about idiots spoiling the movie for you once you’ve seen it opening day. 😉

Really hoping there will be some 70mm Imax showings as with TFA.

I’m not big into 3D either but 3D IMAX was an incredible experience. With that being said I will probably never watch a movie in 3D IMAX with the exceptions of the main Star Wars films.

We should take this Luke v Rey thread to the TFA Review thread 😃

If someone hasn’t I’ll make the transition once I get home and after I’ve smoked a few bowls.

The last time when TFA tickets went on sale the only thing they had available was either IMAX 3D or AVX 3D and that was it. Last time I bought those exclusive 3D glasses but they couldn’t go over my actual seeing glasses so I ended up watching the movie in double vision and I didn’t have time to run out and get the regular 3D glasses because the movie was already playing so this time I’m not buying exclusive glasses.

By the way Han shot first.

Yep. That is actually the number one reason I hope to catch this on opening night.
