How come y’all have a problem with this but not Luke’s expert piloting and his ability to use the force to target a laser torpedo into a narrow exhaust port with like ten minutes of training from Ben?
Edit: the only difference between the two characters that would make Rey a "Mary Sue " but not Luke is that Rey is a girl, and it’s really hard to pretend otherwise.
At the beginning of the film he’s shown playing with a model of his T-16 while his full size ship is in the background:
He tells Han, “I’m not such a bad pilot myself.”
Finn: "We need a pilot."
Rey: “We’ve got one.”
He mentions during the briefing his experience with his T-16.
Rey says after they escape that she’s used simulators before.
Although cut from the theatrical release, Luke is questioned about his piloting skill and Biggs vouches for him, “Sir, Luke is the best bushpilot in the Outer Rim territories.” This scene would later be reinstated in the SE.
If we’re talking stuff from beyond the movie, a quick look at Wookieepedia shows that Rey has spent most of her life learning about ships, working on them, and using simulators.
As for expert piloting, in the opening moments of the battle Luke almost kills himself after flying too close to the surface.
Remember this?
Rey almost crashes the Falcon as soon as it takes off. Most of her maneuvers could be considered luck (or perhaps Ben would say the will of the Force guiding her) and are done with little precision.
Later he’s almost killed by a Tie Fighter until Wedge swoops in and saves him.
Falcon gets a couple hits in the chase too.
Luke is a flawed character that makes mistakes.
Rey on the other hand, never makes a mistake and is the best at everything she tries.
Not quite. Rey unleashes the Rathtars on Han’s freighter by accident. Her main flaw is her insecurity, causing her to run away from Maz’s castle and the initial call to the Force (and Han’s job offer). She’s confident in many ways, but isn’t cocky (having to repeatedly encourage herself while piloting “I can do this, I can do this.”). Is she the best at everything? I don’t think so. She’s not even the best new pilot in this movie (Poe can fly anything). Is she good with a lightsaber? Kinda, at least enough to beat a guy who’s got a pretty gnarly wound. Does that make her the best? Don’t think so. Is she the best at repairing shit and knowing her way around a ship? She’s up there, but fuck man she must have been doing something all those years on Jakku.
She’s highly skilled, sure, but she’s not perfect. She feels real, to me at least. Her incredible Force abilities are of course a whole other thing entirely but this is a fantasy film and I’m interested to see where the next episodes take her from here. Remember Luke’s impatience wasn’t a real factor until ESB. I mean it’s there in SW but it doesn’t change anything, he still does everything he sets out to do and never makes a mistake.
