AoTC teal tint

Does anyone have any information on why the tint was added?
My really amateurish guess is that since there is some blue noise from the digital camera in the untinted film, they tried to negate that by tinting it.
I’m probably way off.

I don’t think the tint looks bad, but it does give the movie a very different feel.

I believe everyone’s guess at the time was that it was done to make the movie look less like a cartoon. Which it kind of did.

When you un-tint it, much of the background CG looks even worse than it already is, so I think your original supposition is probably right - that it was hiding the limited technology of the time.

Despite its failings, it did try to apply a number of innovative approaches to film making. Shame they had to do it to star wars though, and not just make Ed the Duck 2 and screw that up instead.

Iunno about the AOTC teal tint, but I’ve become convinced that the ESB blue tint on Hoth was deliberately added by GL to try to capture the color scheme of the Ralph McQuarrie concept paintings.

Same idea with zooming in slightly on all the ESB Falcon cockpit footage - retroactively correcting the “mistake” of building the set slightly bigger than in SW 1977 to accommodate the actors better.

Some changes to SW really are attempts to capture what Lucas “really wanted” way back when. Doesn’t make them good.

ANH on BD looks terrible color wise, but I think ESB looks great. My only frame of reference is the old unaltered VHS, and color wise, it looks much closer to it’s VHS than ANH from VHS to BD.

Of course, the VHS colors are probably very far from accurate.

My eyes initially glossed over the lowercase letters to try and find a hidden message in the capital letters. And now I’m stuck wondering who this “BARVCO” is.

I think they honestly just thought it looked cool.
