Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1 — Page 129

I think it reads that way because there aren’t any supporting arguments for it. Unless you count the weirded out thing. But I could be weirded out by fewer commentary tracks compared to SW and suggest we record a commentary track.

Wait, that’s actually a way better idea.

Okay.

But I have an even better idea.

How about an audio commentary by Harmy for each movie, detailing the changes in the Special Edition and how Harmy restored each scene to it’s original state as well as the sources of each scene.

It would be interesting to know how each scene was Despecialized while watching the movie.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

I think that would be good for the absolute final version of 3.x since all three films would be completely despecialized at that point. That way Harmy could potentially talk about each part as it went through all versions of DeEd.

I would love to listen to a track like that! Would really complete the despecialised experience.

Yes, I’d definitely be interested in that someday. He’s become quite adept at recording material compared to earlier on. Always interesting and entertaining.

I actually tried recording a commentary like that once but the problem is that in some sections the changes go by so fast and so close to the next one, that there simply isn’t enough time to talk about them and then there are whole long stretches, where there are no changes and I didn’t know what to talk about there.

I guess you would need a script so you know how to summarise the complex parts and what more general topics (e.g. color correction, matching the different frame rates etc.) you can talk about in the other parts. Besides, it’s not unusual for commentary tracks to have silent passages.

What about some kind of documentary that talks about your (Harmy’s) thoughts on the state of the original trilogy, public perceptions, historical importance, and also the technical process of creating the Despecialized Editions? So kind of like a longer version of the existing 20 minute one (which I’ve watched numerous times). Like it could be something that newer fans might watch and realize that there’s more to Star Wars than just the Lucas-approved Blu-rays.

I think the solution is to do something like the “enhanced commentary” on Star Trek Into Darkness and many other movies.

I’d rather have a commentary. The 20 minute doc is fine as it is.

I think a script or at least notes is a good idea. Normal commentaries don’t cover every detail, you just need to prioritize things. It’s okay to talk about things ahead of when they happen on screen, sometimes, or continue on after the fact.

Having a second person who is knowledgeable kind of moderate and move things along often works well, but not sure if it would help in this case.

I also have a suggestion to make a lossless version (either DTS-HD Master Audio or LPCM) of the isolated score for each movie.

It can really please the audiophiles who want to watch the movie with the isolated score and don’t want it to be in plain lossy Dolby Digital.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

Where?
It’s still plain Dolby Digital in this project.
Can you give me some info on this?

Don’t go getting reasonable on us now, we won’t know how to deal with you.

I’m thinking a duet with Harmy and George Lucas. It would be interesting to hear a “commentary track” of them bickering for two hours. An audio grudge match. Lucas, of course, would never validate Harmy’s work by participating, but it would be amazing.

I have some other suggestions:

  1. I think the English mono tracks for Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back should be LPCM 1.0 instead of DTS-HD Master Audio since there is little difference in quality and/or size and LPCM has increased compatibility compared to DTS-HD Master Audio.

  2. I also think that the English 35mm Stereo mixes should be Dolby TrueHD instead of DTS-HD Master Audio so that there can be surround matrixing similar to the LaserDisc audio.
Dolby TrueHD has this Dolby Pro Logic capability but for DTS-HD Master Audio, I’m not sure.
There was apparently something called DTS Stereo which was used on some LaserDiscs and theatrical releases but I’m not sure if it can be used in the modernized DTS and DTS-HD codecs.
I also think that the alternative English LaserDisc mixes should also be in Dolby TrueHD, if it is still allowed in the 48MBps bitrate limit of Blu-ray.

  3. What do you think of the isolated score being in LPCM 2.0? Already posted about it but barely anyone replied to it. Again, only if it’s still within the 48mbps bitrate limit of Blu-ray.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.

Wait. I also forgot:

  1. I think the 5.1 mixes should be in 6.1 or 7.1 instead (most likely 6.1)
I actually talked to hairy_hen about this, he said he probably couldn’t perfectly test this as he only has a 5.1 system and is not entirely sure on how good it would sound.

And I’ve loved every pixel of it.
