I've got a Commodore 64. It's great. It was the first computer I ever had and it holds a place in my heart, as does my NES.

I also had a Vic 20. I had a really weird game where you had to brush these giant teeth and a very cool text-based adventure game that I really, really sucked at.

The Amiga used on Babylon 5 was known as the Video Toaster. I first heard about it on SciFi Buzz. Remember that show? Those were the days when the Sci-Fi Channel truly rocked it hard. Anyway, I was thinking more along the lines of an Amiga gaming rig. Nothing as advanced as the Toaster.

Hey Bossk, I'm really enjoying the Mac. I've found a couple areas already where they could take a hint from Windows, but for the most part I think OS X provides a superior user experience. Specifically, changing the default folder view from icons to list mode is a simple matter in Windows. Open a folder in Explorer, set its properties to match your preferences, then apply those properties to every folder with a simple button click. In OS X, the best way I could find (on macworld.com) was to use the Automator, which manually opens every folder on your machine in the Finder and changes their attributes. It took literally 10 minutes for the Automator to finish the task--on a dual 2.5Ghz Power Mac. Is there a better way?

Also, how do I copy a file to another folder instead of moving it? I know I can right-click it (I'm using a Mighty Mouse with a second mouse button), select Copy from the context menu, and then paste it into another folder. In Windows, I can click and drag with the right mouse button, and when I release the button it asks me if I want to Move or Copy. Something similar on the Mac or is Copy/Paste the only way? Clicking and dragging always moves for me, never copies.

I love it when threads go entirely off-topic. I hope it means everyone's questions are answered about the forum software.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no better way. And I agree with you, that is one thing that really does bother me about OS X. After a while, I just became accustomed to the annoyance of it. Shame, really. But it's a minor annoyance considering all the other great aspects of OS X.

Jay: I don't know too many people who appreciated Sci-Fi Buzz. That show ruled. Around 1998 that channel was really good, with the new MST3K shows running, Sightings, etc. Then they shook things up and completely screwed us.

Here's a puzzler: how do I get a Windows network share to mount on startup?

Only my main workstation is a Mac. I have two Windows machines on my network. All drives are shared with all machines.

I created an Automator application that uses an AppleScript I found online that tells the Finder to mount the share drives. If I double-click on the app, it mounts the drives just fine. However, when I place it in my login item list, it runs, but the drives don't mount.

I can see the app executing at startup in the upper right-hand corner (not sure what to call this, seems like the Windows equivalent is the System Tray). My suspicion is that it's executing before my network connection is active, so it's not seeing the shares.

I realize I can run the app manually to mount the drives, but I'd really like to automate it because the sites I build in Dreamweaver are stored on my Windows-based development server. Every time I start Dreamweaver it says it can't find the folder. If the shares would mount automatically at startup, I wouldn't get that error.

One more for you. Is there a way in Tiger to put an alias to the Application folder under the little apple menu? I don't want my dock or my desktop overcrowded with applications and I don't like browsing Finder when I want to launch something. I basically want to emulate the "All Programs" menu in Windows. A Mac I used to dabble with at my old job had an Applications folder under the apple menu. It was running OS 9 I think.

Dunno the network questions. Not my bag, baby.

As for the all applications, I had that back in OS 8 and 9. In X, I'm not sure how to get it in the Apple menu, per se. But I have found that an applications shortcut does exist in the "Go" menu when you are in Finder. Does that help at all?

Another go-round would be to open up your Mac HD and do a control+mouseclick (right click if you have a Mighty Mouse) on the Applications menu. Select "Make Alias" and drag the alias down into your dock. It's one extra step to get into the programs, yes, but at least your dock is cleaned up.

I'm still looking to see what else I can find to actually get it in the Apple Menu, but it doesn't look like this can be done as it appears the functions in the OS X Apple Menu are pretty fixed unlike OS 8 and 9.

Okay, the "another go round" idea of mine is suddenly not working. It won't let me drag the alias down to the dock. Damn. Sorry.

Yeah, I tried that already. I found some commercial software that puts the traditional apple menu functionality back. Why would Apple take this away? A quick Google search turns up a lot of complaints about the "locked" apple menu.

Who knows, it may wind up changing. You can only do so much when creating an operating system. Sometimes, you just plain forget to add some piece of functionality in there. Maybe it will go back. I had completely forgotten about it until you mentioned it, and now I realize how handy it was. Although, my dock isn't nearly as congested as it sounds like yours is. Once in a great while, I find myself opening up my applications folder to find something I don't use all that often. Other times, I'll just double click the file I'm working on and let it open the app for me.

You guys definitely should've had the boloney slices ready. Missed your opportunity.

I actually got quite a bit done yesterday and today. I think we'll be in beta Wednesday night.

Count me as disturbed by the thought. What's the status of the new site?

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

I'm about 50 posts off from being a Jedi Knight. I know it doesn't really matter, but I would like to achieve that status before it becomes redundent, and I don't want to spam. How long do I have?

Given what I have to complete at this point and a fair amount of time for beta testing, I'd say a week at least. I'll only have basic forum functionality ready to test tonight: logging in, posting, and editing posts. I need to finish the user control panel and PM functionality.

So I belive that when it moves from beta into gold, production version, the posts that we post for testing will be deleted, right? Because I intend to do some nonsense posts to help testing it.

Also, will the beta have our usernames and passwords? If so, it's better if no one here changes their password afterwards, or else the two databases will be unsynchronized.

The entire database for the beta forum will be scrapped before launch. Nothing will carry over.

Creating a new account is part of the testing, so your current accounts won't be brought over to the beta database. They'll only be carried over to the production version.

Sorry for the delay in posting the beta. I had a job interview today that I needed to prepare for.

I'm working on the forums tonight. Should have something later.
