Idea & Info Wanted: Is there a way to save Bakshi's Lord of the Rings?

I agree with DrGonzo. The type of animation may not be for everybody, but it is Bakshi style. The film is great in its own kind of way, and like DrGonzo sai, its biggest flaw is ending prematurely and not being the whole story. I don't see much point in trying to change it. And short of re-drawing it I have no idea how you would go about making it look more cartoony.

Just to clarify, I'm talking about making the blatantly "live action" parts appear more in line with the rest of the film. I hate that it stands out so much. It's like Mary Poppins or something. I actually like the film myself -- it's quite true to the books.

There is a lot wrong with Bakshi’s LOTR, but the thing that irks me the most is the appearance of some of the “animation”. The scenes at Bree and Helm’s Deep, in particular, are clearly just live actors with some posterizing effect laid over them. I’ve wondered if it is possible to make these look more “cartoon-like” to blend in better with the traditional animation. I have After Effects, but haven’t been pleased with my results in trying this.

Yep! I've been flipping through it eagerly. I really like the way you end it with "Gollum's Song", which you've managed to blend in quite seamlesly. The only "criticism" I have is that the color grading seems to be too rich. Did you make DVD menus for these? I don't get any on my computer at least.

I think the only extra thing I would've done (and may when I do my edit) is take out the comic relief elements with Gimli. I haven't quite figured out how to do it, but your edit looks like a great template to start from.

I've taken out all the comic relief from Gimli in my version, which BTW will be on its way to you this week!

Info: Anyone want to swap 'Lord of the Rings' re-edits?
Time

I’m finishing up my re-edited ROTK and have already finished the Two Towers. All re-edited to hew closer to the books, structurally and content-wise. I can provide a list of changes if you want. I’m extremely happy with both and looking forward to re-editing FOTR (especially giving Aragorn back the whole broken sword story). Anyone want to swap LOTR re-edits?

I've been working on a series of LOTR re-edits and, I must say, Lord Phillock, your changes mirror mine very closely! Great minds and all that...

I'm very glad you have restored Aragorn's authority as well as the color to Lothlorien. Did you add color correction to the entire image, or just to parts of the image? It looks like you added some yellow and red. I was disappointed by the blue tones seen in the film -- didn't match the books at all IMO. What software did you use for your work?

The only thing I didn't do that you did was to put Boromir's death at the beginning of TTT. It just doesn't work dramatically IMO, even though your version is closer to the book in this regard. I'm very excited about my handling of the Ents and Entmoot.

I also restored Aragorn's broken sword to Fellowship, so that he carries it with him and has it reforged in Rivendell.

My TTT is done -- 4 hours long! Yikes! Now I'm working on ROTK. Compositing work is taking a while to fix the Witch King encounter.

Help: looking for... LOTR - 'Two Towers: Purist's Edit'
Time

A couple of years ago, there was a “Purist’s Edit” of the Two Towers. Does anyone know where it can be found?

I have made a TTT version myself, and believe it goes even further than what I have read about the Purist’s Edit in returning the film to Tolkien’s books, right down to the very structure of the books (breaking it down into Books III and IV for example, ending the film with Frodo’s capture by the orcs after Shelob’s lair).

My version runs 4 hours. Nevertheless, I would really like to see this Purist’s Edit for comparison.

And I see not much to be edited... except the saruman sub-plot that needs to be refurbished...

so what else is there to edit in FOTR?

I'm working on one. Changing the Saruman story (like you), restoring Aragorn's broken sword (with some keyframing), removing any Gimli buffoonery, a couple of things to the council of Elrond. Gotta upload my Two Towers as well... I'm rather proud of it.

there was an edit of fellowship of the ring right on these boards but seems to have dissapeared. I think It was called " The Return of the Hobbit" or "THe Return of the Hobbits".

Do you know what was different about this version? There isn't much (if anything) about Fellowship that merits changing IMO.

I personally am editing TTT and ROTK for my own personal use and don't intend to share them at all.

I gotta ask... what changes are you making? What software are you using?

For myself, I'm making two versions of each film: a "book" version that follows Tolkien as closely as possible, and a mildly edited version that retains 99.9% of the original films but deletes small annoyances like Gimli's buffoonery.

I'm using Final Cut Pro 5, DVD Studio Pro, Cinematize, and Mac the Ripper.

Just kidding

In terms of getting your edit out there for other fans - it will kinda happen itself. There are various avenues to persue such as torrents or by the pay-it-forward system that indirectly operates on various boards - send it to a few key people and the news will spread quicker than you can imagine !

Hollywood will never have an issue, imho, if the tenure of the edit is very much encouraged to be a re-envisioning of the original piece (flattering as opposed to plagiaristic). Similarly an overt message that this is intended as an experimental edit and that it should be expected that all that watch it should own the original work - whilst hardly a legal testament to the suits, will at least show goodwill on your behalf - see GreenCapt's Batman & Robin Edit, CrappyLogo's Wizard of Oz, CBB's edits and just about anything by the "big hitters" of the board: OCPMovie, ADigitalMan etc.

It should be noted that MagnoliaFan was even invited to Lucas' ranch ! So I hardly think there will be much coal-scraping if you enter into the spirit of these forums !

Good luck with the project and be sure to let us know how it's coming along

So if I upload an edit via torrent, do I just go on these boards and say "look what I did!" or is that too brazen?

It sounds a little similar whereby - to my understanding - the fan editor has brought it more into line with the books.

There's also Lord Phillock's release as well - you can find a thread on it a few pages down.

However certainly don't let that put you off doing ROTK - the more the merrier Lord Phillock

Thanks for the encouragement. While I've been a professional editor for over 10 years, I'm new to the world of shared fan edits. How do you get to see other fan edits as well as present your own work without being scraped over the coals by the movie indutsry?

What extraction software can decode multiple channelsand keep them seperate? I'm using Cinematize, which will unfortuanely downmix everything to 2 channels.

I'm curious as to what FanFiltration is doing abuot mixing scenes from the Smithee version with that of the Lynch version in regards to music. The Smithee version has a pervasive soundtrack that won't (IMO) mix well with the Lynch version. For instance, there are scenes in the Lynch version that have no music, while the Smithee version has a constant soundtrack running through the entire scene. Are you going to ujust use the entire Smithee version in such cases? If only there was a way to remove the music from the Smithee version... it's bloody awful.
