For what it’s worth, in the novelization, Poe sets a hyperspace entry point before Leia and Holdo retake command of the ship. That entry point is never changed, so when Holdo is alone on the ship waiting to die, she notices it - and because the ships have kept moving that whole time, the entry point is now behind the First Order fleet. That’s what gives her the idea to try it - because the ship will be accelerating to near lightspeed prior to hitting the hyperspace entry point.

So the “hyperspace ramming” actually occurs before the ship enters hyperspace, while the ship is accelerating to near-lightspeed in realspace.

It was basically her seeing where the entry point was plotted in relation to the position of the fleet, getting the idea, and going “Huh, wonder if this will work? Can’t hurt to try since I’m dead at this point anyway.”

Huh, that’s a fairly good in-universe explanation. So it’s not the hyperspace travel itself that makes the collision but the “flicker of pseudomotion”, as Zahn puts it.

EDIT: That could also go some way towards addressing my biggest problem with that scene - why no one thought to do that maneuver before losing 90% of their fleet. They couldn’t until the entry point was sufficiently far away behind the First Order.

You’ve undermined your thesis that people are merely conditioned to like lower frame rates. People readily accepted talkies and color.

Not even slightly. Both colour and talkies were fiercely resisted at first. Chromophobia was the popular position among artists of the time. Of course, all three advances make the films appear closer to real life and therefore further diminish the illusion of stepping away from reality for two hours. Amusingly the same happened to a lesser extent with the migration of television to HD - people complained how sharp and fake it looked.

But I’ve probably derailed this thread long enough. Do you think we’re likely to see more weaponized hyperdrives in canon now?

Held back from what? Ugliness?

Wait, trimboNZ… New Zealand? Defending HFR filming… are you PETER JACKSON‽

Heh, no. But I also defend the use of sound and colour in film, even though they have been said to detract from a real cinema experience.

The soap opera effect has held back cinema by decades. If we hadn’t had low-quality TV presented in a watchable frame rate for the past fifty years then people would stop complaining about movies filmed at anything faster than the horribly juddery 24 fps looking “cheap”. Give me 48+ fps any day.

Another question for Ady when he gets Internet service back:

Concerning the Star Wars Rebels finale:

Now that we know who does and doesn’t survive Star Wars Rebels, do you have any plans to insert [spoiler] into the battle? Rex is already on Endor, retconned as White Bearded Rebel (not a spoiler - that was suggested in March 2016 and all but confirmed in April 2017).

I’m annoyed by Rogue One’s abrupt end, if you compare it to the rest of Star Wars. I wonder if that’s going to become a Anthology thing and Solo will also end sort of abruptly.

That’d be a weird tradition to have. Seems more like a result of the story Rogue One was telling.

It’s not inconceivable for Solo to end with Han landing at Mos Eisley or going into the cantina.

I expect the last line to be:

“Clear to land at docking bay 94”

Pretty sure the Emperor’s tower is supposed to be at or near the North Pole of the DSII

I had always thought it was closer to the South Pole, as the Emperor points upwards (roughly ten o’clock) when gesturing to the sanctuary moon, and Luke’s gaze follows in that direction.

Assuming, of course, that DS2 isn’t orbiting upside-down. I thought it was only flipped horizontally in post 😃

From memory he even says, “your friends up there on the sanctuary moon are walking into a trap”, though I’ll have to re-watch it to confirm it. Online quotes record him saying “out there”, “down there” and “up there” depending on which version you read!

According to this Bothan intelligence, the Death Star is oriented along the same axis as Endor:
Huh
Who are you going to believe?

The footage :p

It may well have looked like the diagram when the Bothans got their intel, but it’s clearly not the case by the time we enter the movie:

Huh
Huh

In the meantime Jerjerrod may have decided to finally point it away from Endor, or Palpatine may have fed the Bothans bad intel, for whatever reason.

I wish Luke, Han and Leia would still be seen together in the ending.
Since it’s much more sad in hindsight in The Force Awakens, since that would be the last time they were together in a main movie.

Why not have the Ewok celebration, the planet celebration, the shot of Han, Luke, and Leia together, and finally the ghosts and then Luke by himself, in that order. That way, everything can still be there.

So, Luke just left Vader’s body chilling on Endor somewhere while he partied with his buddies?

Yes, stowed in the shuttle that he used to escape the Death Star.

There’s a female pilot in the battle already who speaks with a man’s voice. She’s going to be redubbed, and new pilots will be filmed and added.

Oh really, I didn’t know that. Wow that’s weird. I need to watch ROTJ again.

Look for the line, “Got it”.

I updated my post with a link (2:29 in):

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

Here’s my random thoughts after my recent first viewing:

Snoke’s abrupt end was a surprise and he was well animated, but he was still just grandpa in a bathrobe. I’m actually a little disappointed after seeing his over-sized hologram in TFA that he was more than a few inches tall in the flesh.

Yodas moments were nice, and a wonderful example of the younger master still needing to learn. But that puppet, holy crap it was terrible. Thumb Wars puppet terrible. I get that they wanted to build an exact replica of the ESB model using the same techniques (and somehow screwed it up) and let Frank do the puppeteering for nostalgia’s sake but this really is a situation where CGI should have been chosen over practical effects.

Leia’s spacewalk, I could take or leave. It was a nice moment for her and a good reveal of her connection to the Force, but might have meant a bit more if it were to some end other than self-preservation. Like save Ackbar or repair something outside the ship.

The lightspeed attack was spectacular and truly heroic. BUT. It would have been nice if one of those brilliant military strategists had thought of doing that earlier in the piece, before three quarters of their fleet were destroyed for absolutely nothing. This is going to make re-watches difficult.

I like the full-circle direction they’re taking the Force. In ANH and somewhat in ESB, the Force is presented as a connection between all living things, Jedi had mastered the ability to use it and, with time and patience, you could too. In subsequent films, once it was decided to make Leia and Luke related, it became a special ability only accessible to an elite few across the galaxy and perhaps their offspring. In TFA we saw Rey with her seemingly ridiculous mastery of the Force over a short period, but now in TLJ we see broom-boy casually do a force-pull, implying a genuine, wider, awakening taking place. This pretty much removes any importance in who Rey’s parents actually were (whether Kylo Ren was lying or not).

The casino brings to focus a culture of decadence that we haven’t seen before, except perhaps at the Opera in ROTS, but it’s a little too close to Earth to be convincing. Tuxedos and cups of tea took me out of the galaxy far, far away.

The porgs were cute and stayed out of the way enough not to bother me.

Luke… took an interesting arc. We now know he had no connection to the Force when Han died so some bizarre questions come up (like why did Artoo wake up at that time in TFA?).
