I’m still waiting on some restoration news already!

Nothing to report at this time. All files are in the same state as they were several months ago and are on my hard drive but I have not reconnected my editing suite since the move to my new place. I’ll update you all here if there is any progress in the future.

Any update on this? I thought this restoration was supposed to be done in April and now it’s July 😕

I had originally estimated it to be complete in the spring. It was at about 80-90% complete, but then I went through a seperation, was forced to move out, purchased my first home, which ended up making me seriously ill because we found out the home had massive mold problems. The home had to be abated for the mold issue and while all this was happening I developed mono, lost my job suddenly and had to find a new job, which I just started in the late spring, and the new job has really sapped my time. I plan on reconnecting the computer I use for restoration within the next couple of months. But I couldn’t even tell you when it will be done. I will update you when it I have restarted, as it nears completion and when it is complete.

I’m so excited. The restoration is almost finished everyone!

First off: The Sound. I got the Dolby Digital 5.1 DVD mix loaded up and cleaned up and synced with the 25fps version corrected to 24, then did some re-mixing into 6.1 DTS ES. I have done a few sound effect pans into the surrounds when appropriate and re-mixed thunder and lightning for the nightmare scene/rain sequence. There were also some vocal issues on the musical number so I did some tweaking to make the vocals easier to hear. I have also of course included the original 5.1 DVD mix and the original stereo mix for those who don’t like revisions. (This is Original Trilogy after all.)

I digitally rotoscoped and cleaned nearly 600 separate shots in the movie, and also completely digitally redid the opening and closing titles. The final result is a pretty big difference. (The PAL transfer itself is a pretty big jump to begin with.)

I also added a title card for myself to the end credits for restoration work, and added the blue Disney castle logo from that era to the beginning and end. (I know Disney treated this film like crap upon release, so it’s my way of pretending they didn’t.)

I know some of you may not like the “revisions” to the film, but outside of the opening and closing logos, I just did a heck of a lot of dirt and spot removal. I did use some noise reduction in shots but I am very selective in my use of it. I hope you will be pleased with the results. I also have been working on a short 5 minute video documentary about the restoration of the movie… Which I will premiere here when it is complete. I expect to be done with it in April. I also have finished the cover art and will share it at a later time. Next time I’ll post some before and after video samples.

I have already started a restoration of this film based on upscaling the superior PAL transfer and removing de-interlacing and ghosting artifacts. I am converting to 25fps progressive then applying slowdown to get back to the appropriate 24fps and remixing the soundtrack in 6.1 EX using the original theatrical stereo track and the original soundtrack album that was released Fairly recently. After that I am doing spot and dirt reduction using the German restoration software Diamant. Should be done hopefully by March.

Cool! How far have you gotten?

I'm actually fairly far along with it, still using the DIAMANT dustbusting software to remove dirt frame by frame. The main thing that is taking so long is stabilizing the image. So much telecine wobble. I am digitally redoing the titles and correcting several issues. Should have it done in the fall. The images I posted above pale in comparison to what will be the final product. Also was able to create a 6.1 DTS discrete EX mix using the original theatrical audio, the 5.1 DVD mix and the soundtrack CD to create some separation. Artwork is coming together as well.

I'm looking for the DTS track to Disney's Flubber. I know it is on laserdisc. I even own it. Just don't think I can rip it to my mac.

This thread is for cinema DTS, not home video DTS.  The 2 are different.  There are tutorials in the help section on capturing bit perfect audio.  You might want to try there.

:)

Sure. But is there a DTS theatrical track somewhere? I'm much more interested in that.

And the British version and US version have the same lyrics.

Pretty sure the YouTube clip had the uncensored lyrics, but I'm too lazy to check.

Are you releasing this as a DVD5 also, or only as an upscale?

Sounds the same to me. Lyrics differ on the soundtrack album but aren't "censored". Haven't decided on release time or format. Just focused on making the highest quality picture and sound release possible.

Looking good, maybe slightly oversharpened? I seem to see more ringing than on the dvd.
Which upscaling algorithm did you use?

No sharpening applied, and no algorithm used. Just use my own "secret sauce" approach for my upscales. It does look better in motion at 24fps and 1080p. Also isnt quite finished yet. Just a rough cut. Should be done by March.

Already signed up anyways! Here is a link to my YouTube comparison shot of my restoration. FYI, This is a fairly low res (720p) highly compressed video. And it has the American edition on the left, with the PAL edition on the right after image correction and frame by frame restoration on DIAMANT. Obviously this is nowhere near the full quality of My final 1080p product, but at least you can see dirt and spec removal.

Yes, please post screenshots! So how did you do the upscaling?

There are a few frames that seem to be somehow blended across all the different versions/telecines (I wonder how that happened), did you manage to do anything with those?

Like this frame:

Oh, and what R2 release did you use?

What would you suggest as the best way to post images for the forum? I'm a newbie!

I have noticed those "blended" frames. They all seem to occur 3-4 frames before a hard cut Between two different shots. Usually I will double the frame right before it or after it and cut the blended frame. Visually during playback that seems to be less distracting then the blended frame. Also I am using the out of print Carlton UK dvd. More importantly I am removing dust specs and scratches. I find these to be much more distracting then the blended frames.

I have synched it to the 5.1 mix from the American DVD which lined up perfectly with the audio.

You do know the American DVD has censored audio, right?

I was fully aware of the censored shot mentioned previously on this thread, but not aware of any sound related censorship… Care to elaborate?

Update on the restoration process. I have completed the upscaling to 1080p and conversion and PAL 25 to NTSC 23.976 slowdown process and removed all interlacing and ghosting artifacts. I have synched it to the 5.1 mix from the American DVD which lined up perfectly with the audio. I am doing some audio work and have completed frame by frame restoration on the opening title sequence restoration and the shot where the appliances venture out into the world through the front door. Both of these shots were in pretty awful shape even on the PAL transfer (which looks pretty spectacular in most other shots by the way.) I may post some screenshots (if I am allowed) Don't know the rules on screenshots, and also didn't know if anyone had any image hosting/posting recommendations when using this site. (Still a newbie to this particular forum.)
