Info Wanted: A question about public domain works...
Time

As I understand, the new transfer features some things that were not in the original theatrical Version? In this case it may be under copyright law.

http://www.copylaw.com/new_articles/PublicDomain.html:

Whenever you rely on the PD status of a work, it is important to make sure that the particular version you want to use is actually in the public domain.
Later versions or adaptations (e.g., translations, revisions, annotated and illustrated editions) of PD works may be protected by a separate copyright.

That’s what they did for Beneath the 12 Mile Reef, the restored release is an extended cut, and of course they’ve yet to bother restoring the original.

The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints (a WIP)

Agreed! Another thing that frustrates me that I think about a lot is the fact that they won’t even allow the originals to be booked for shows. Most other films a cinema can select whether they want to screen a print or a DCP.

yeah me too, I was reading awhile back on a website for how to license movies, that star wars hasn’t been available because of rights issues, hopefully with disney buying out parts of fox that’ll change.

Easier to answer than you think.
In order to copy the disc you must defeat a digital copy protection scheme. That is a crime by itself regardless of the movie’s copyright status.

Generally, but I bought the bluray of the Vampire Bat on bd-r from Film Detective, which was unprotected.

Also there are exemptions for fair use, but I’m guessing the poster wasn’t talking about those

According to several people at archive.org it depends. Just a new transfer and minor work generally don’t qualify, but major work might. some releases are clear on this matter for example my copy of “the brain that wouldn’t die” says specifically that the bonus features and the disc artwork are copyrighted. By the way archive.org has had a decent high definition copy of that long before the criterion release.

Snow Kill - 1990 laserdisc (Released)
Time

Snow kill was a harcore 1990 tv drama that has never been released in any format other than laserdisc and vhs. Not even a bootleg until now. I got this from ebay while searching for collectibles and captured it with a vtop usb capture and a Pioneer cld-1080 player.

Description from the back

Taking on the wilderness can be brutal. But taking on the wilderness and a gang of killers is war!
David Duke(The Winds of War) and Patti D’ Arbanvill(Wiseguy) star in this thrill-packed adventure that crackles with suspense and sudden violence. The excitement begins when five urbanites on a weekend of survival training cross paths with murderous drug smugglers. One by one the city dwellers fall victim to the thugs. Finally only beautiful Lauren(D’ Arbancille, the lone woman in the group, is left to outsmart them.

Inconsistent use of "the force"

That line of Vader’s makes me think of Matthew 17:20:

He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

Technically anything would be possible through the Force, it’s the fabric of the universe after all, but actually mastering it to that level is another thing entirely. At least that’s how I’ve always understood it.

good point.
