Non-anamorphic widescreen is a 4:3 (square-ish) letterboxed image designed to be shown on a square-ish 4:3 TV.
HD widescreen images aren't designed for old square TVs- they're designed for newer widescreen TVs, so they're anamorphic.

Yes, but don't forget that anamorphic DVD's will also play correctly on old 4:3 square TV's.

I know you were just making a joke :-) BTW Soylent Green is one of my 70's favourites. CH made some damn good sci fi in the 70's!

Personally I hope GL has many happy years to come and he doesn't get done in by diabetes or anything. Heck maybe he'll even have a change of heart over the next dew years, realise his directorial failures and let somebody talented do the next ones :-)

Hmm, regarding the fixed final cut, not a good idea to rush the guy, that will only produce a rushed lower quality job, better to let him do it properly at his own pace, even if it is a bit slow coming out.

Can I ask how the XO will beat the GOUT? Or even moreso, how it will beat an anamorphic "fixup" of the GOUT?
Thanks for all your good replies :-)

I’ve been a reader on this board for quite a while (and used to post under an old forgotten id). I followed all the fan preservation threads with fascination.
But now that the non-anamorphic official DVD’s of the original trilogy have been released I have to ask, are these preservation projects valid anymore? Is anybody going to be able to improve on the official DVD’s?
I look forward to hearing your views 😃
