Info: Authoring Help with DVDStyler & IMGBurn
Time

Thanks again Spaced Ranger!

It’s just turning out to be a much bigger pain than I expected! I had planned to use a DVD-DL so I could use a larger file for better image quality, but the idea of a pause at a layer break really bugs me.

So instead I used MakeMKV to extract an MKV that would fit on a standard DVD from the VIDEO_TS in the DVD5 version.

It has all the chapter stops, but DVDstyler doesn’t recognize them, instead assigning a break every 10 minutes.

(Grumble!)

But, in theory, no problem. Because I can just change those points to match the ones posted by “oojason” here, right?:

http://originaltrilogy.com/post/id/906589

Yeah…still no dice. The preview pictures still seem to be a chapter off, even though the times seem to be correct for the start of all the chapters.

(Grumble!!)

But DVDStyler does offer an option to assign a frame # for a picture instead of the image it defaults to. BUT … I can’t seem to find a simple media player that will give frame #s for MKVs instead of using HH:MM:SS format.

(GRUMBLE!!!)

Anybody have any suggestions on what to do from here? I’d be happy to post screen shots somewhere if it might help.

Thanks!

Info: Authoring Help with DVDStyler & IMGBurn
Time

Hello all!

Long post. Apologies.

OK, so I have succeeded in downloading all three versions of all three Despecialized films. I’ve even succeeded in burning DVDs from the DVD5 versions.

So if this is as far as I get, I’m still very happy!

However, as amazing as Harmy’s Despecialized Editions are, I miss having any kind of DVD menu and having subtitles that are optional. So I was hoping to be able to author some very simple menus, with nothing but background images, that would let me navigate chapters and turn subtitles on and off.

Trying my hand with Star Wars first, I used MakeMKV to extract an MKV from the AVCHD version that ends up being about 6.7 GB.

I have created a project in DVDStyler using that and one of the SRT files from Harmy’s 17 GB MKV version for subtitles and tried to burn it to a Verbatim Dual Layer DVD with that program. But the menus didn’t seem to burn properly. The buttons didn’t look the same or do what they were supposed to and the background image quality changed for the worse as well.

I thought that maybe it was just the burning part of the program being glitchy. So I saved the project as an ISO and was going to try burning that with IMGBurn. But I get this error message from IMGBurn when I try that:

“Optimal L1 Data Zone Start LBA: None Found! (VTS_01)
This image has not been mastered correctly for burning onto a double layer (OTP Track Path) disc.
None of the cells meet the ‘DVD-Video specification’ criteria for a potential layer break position.
Do you want to continue anyway?”

I take it that means I need to somehow choose a spot in the movie where a slight pause as the DVD player changes layers will be least noticeable.

But even after consulting this guide:

http://club.myce.com/f153/choosing-correct-layer-break-position-imgburn-313692/

I’m still a little unclear on how to do it.

Plus, even after I figure out how, I need to figure out where, and I thought I also might defer to those of you who know the movies backwards and forwards better than I do for suggestions on spots in the center 50% of each of the three films where a layer break might be least noticeable.

Anybody willing to try a little trouble shooting with me? I’m happy to provide more info if needed and post screen shots of what I put together and what I’m seeing if anyone is.

My goal would be to do this without needing to buy a paid authoring program, though that may be a pipe dream. If it is, please let me know, and as I said, I’m still more than happy. But if anyone is willing to see if they have some ideas on how to make what I’ve made work better, let me know.

OR…

If anyone has additional homemade menus that would let me burn the Despecialized Editions from a 6.7ish GB files to DVD-DLs that will play in standard DVD players, with chapter menus and a subtitle on/off menu, and an appropriate layer break, without having to make my own, I’d be thrilled to get that help!

OR…

If anyone has better ideas on how to burn a disc playable on a standard DVD player with the menu features above, I’d be thrilled to get that help as well!

Thanks!

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

WOW! Thank you all for your answers!

I feel like a kid at a baseball game, and four of the star players just tipped their hats to me.

(smiley face)

But just to clarify, if I were to want to download a previous version after a newer version had been released, as long as I still have all the rar links, I’d just re-download it the same way I had the first time, correct?

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Hi guys,

Nope. It is about all three. And I haven’t found anyone discussing this, so I’ll go ahead and ask here.

I’m wondering about continued access to 720p versions, even after possible future releases of 1080p versions.

When ROTJ 2.5 was released, the links to 1.0 were removed from tehparadox.

That’s all well and good, since they were both 720 and 2.5 was more polished. But I’m concerned that if work on 3.0 1080p versions is completed somewhere down the line, that the links to the 2.5s will be gone and people will lose access to the 720p versions. And that might be a headache for those of us wanting to make DVDs instead of Blu-rays.

So if that were to happen, are there any plans to maintain a publicly posted list (similar to HanDuet’s list at https://goo.gl/5Sif60) but with 2.5 links even after 3.0’s are out?

And if not, will the 2.5 rars at least still be posted on uloz, mega, etc as long as we save the links?

Thanks!

I’m looking for a better way to search for answers in these threads before posting.
Time

Hello all,

I’m thrilled to have discovered the Despecialized Editions. I’ve downloaded all three formats of the SW and ROTJ 2.5’s, watched the ESB 2.0 MKV, and am anxiously awaiting the 2.5 release to do a full ESB download.

I have some questions about disc authoring and I haven’t yet found them already asked in the threads. I’ve skimmed all 63 pages. But I suspect they are there somewhere.

So before I clutter up the place with questions others may/probably have already asked, I’ll ask this:

Is there any better way to search for information here than manually searching through the post titles one page at a time?

They aren’t perfect, but I went ahead and tried my own hand at it.

Here are the results, if anyone is interested:

Hey these are AMAZING! Almost just like the VHS copies I had as a kid! And it’s awesome that you have versions for AVCHDs and Blu-rays too!

Might it be possible for you to post versions with a standard DVD logo on the spine?

LYou know, like this or some variant of it?:

I realize this is a fairly old post, but I didn’t think it would hurt to ask.

Thanks!

There is a noticable wobble on the lower left fusal thrust engine of the third X-wing to come into frame.

I searched this thread before posting, but it doesn’t look like anyone else has mentioned it.
I’m not sure if this is an artifact from 1977 or not.

I don’t have the film handy, but I assume this is the first shot of the fleet? I actually thought this was an error in Harmy’s composite too, but then I looked at other original sources (I think TN1’s video) and this is what the original composite did.

Yep, that shot exactly. And huh! What do you know!

If that’s the case, by all means, please disregard my earlier post. I’m in full agreement with this project’s consensus to preserve the original film “warts and all” as someone around here said.

Perhaps I never noticed it, because before you guys, I never had such a high quality copy!
