General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread
Time

Even with Spielberg, they were never super close, they just work together. It's not like Spielberg ever visits the Ranch just for a beer with Lucas so they can shoot the shit, it's always for a rough-cut-screening or a script meeting or something...

Spielberg would say otherwise:

On his friendship (described as "best friends") with George Lucas,

SS: George doesn't do text or email ever, I've never received a text or email from George and he's never received one from me. He's a phoner you know, it's all over the telephone or it's in person. So it's either eyes on or it's a telephone call, but it's never texting...You know, you get a phone call and it's like here, (Spielberg slips into George Lucas impression) "Hey Steve. (laughter) What are you doing?" "Oh I'm just sort of sitting around working George, making ten pictures a year as a producer, what are you doing?" "Oh. I don't know." (laughter)...The thing with George, when George and I get on the telephone, I have to clear my morning or my afternoon because we talk for a long long time. The only person I've ever talked to at the length I talk to George, believe it or not, was Stanley Kubrick, back when we were friends in the 80s, but George, you know, we talk about everything, we talk about movies, his projects, my projects, we talk about our families and our friendship and it's an enduring friendship. I met George when he premiered THX at the Royce Hall UCLA/USC Film Festival in 1967 I think it was, so we've known each other for a long time.

I'd say there very close for friends who live in different cities

my memory isn't that bad, is it? (in SW '77 - Luke misses with the grappling hook?)
Time

I read the nerd blog Topless Robot regularly and whilst reading the SW Blu-ray FAQ I noticed this conversation going on in the comments:

I saw Empire Strikes Back when I was 9.

I could swear to God, Satan, Jesus, Dumbledore, Vishnu, Allah, Zeus and Tom Cruise's sopping bunghole that in the version I saw in the theater, the scene where Luke falls off the antenna thing on Bespin onto the Falcon, included Lando GOING OUT ONTO THE SHIP to get him and saying, "I got you, kid."

I have never seen that version ever again. Am I nuts? Why would I dream that? Did anyone else ever see that version?

I remember that scene too.

Same here. I thought it was still in the film, actually (can you tell I only watch the originals? ;)). Did they remove it? oO

that's what i remember

I too remember that scene. I think that was from it running on TV when I was about 6 or so (would have been around the time when Jedi came out in the theaters)

I remember that scene too.

ive seen it i though perhaps i was mistaken   thank god im not crazy

I don't think I've heard of this before, but that's quite a few people misremembering the same thing. Is there any explanation to this?

Possibly the novel, comic adaptation, radio play etc?

Cultural impact can't be steered
Time

Since it appears this thread has become about the quality of the blu-ray artwork (solid first post Anchorhead) this is the artist who created it*:

Cliff Cramp

Maybe, if one was so inclined, someone could contact him and ask if he was given instructions on where to place certain characters both OT and PT in the collage or it was simply random.

*The new artwork, not the stuff featured in the Star Wars Visions collection.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

These are all in the source files. I never had an encoding glitch that I'd cause myself.

Harmy said:

I'll see what I can do to fix these (although one of these is from the GOUT, so if the frame is missing there, there's not much I can do about it.)

... but I think I may have found a glitch.

At 48.05 and lasts for about a second:

Did you ever work out if that was an encoding error or is the problem with the original source?

I'm looking for all of them, not just SW. I didn't see final Empire or Jedi covers in the first posts of their threads.

page 42.

OK, now that all three films are out, here are the finished covers:

And here's a download link to full res versions with typos corrected:

Could someone please run these through IMANDIX for me (or something similar - you know a program that puts them into boxes automatically). Ideally with the forum colour background.

The DVD had the original mono, did they get rid of that for the BD?? That would be awful, I can't stand that remixed mess half the time. I think the only place the new 5.1 was superior was when the tanker truck explodes.

They just re-released it in a digibook edition with no original mono mix. For this reason, I didn't get it and kept my DVD. Does anhyone know if the digibook edition is the picture quality as the first release?

Same picture quality, in fact same exact disc.

No, no mono on the blu-ray.

I read somewhere that a new transfer was completed or partially completed but MGM isn't exactly swimming in money these days to make Terminator a priority.

You can get the blu-ray for less than $10 but I'll wait. I've still got my DVD.

Spielberg comments on digital alterations to his films
Time

What do we make of this?

Steven Spielberg: This is the best it's ever looked because in preparation for the eventual release on Blu-Ray (applause), we had to go and correct the print again and get the original negative out of the salt mines (laughter) and then we had to do the separations and basically, the files which were just amazing with all the technology today, without changing any of the movie materially, like we haven't removed anything (applause) we haven't added CGI...This is the movie that some of you may remember from 1981, looking at the age of the audience, most of you don't remember it from 1981 (laughter). But it is THE movie, it just looks so much better.

Some are suggesting the guide wires and cobra reflection will be back in but I think they're still digitally removed in the recent HD broadcasts (can someone confirm this?)that will probably be the same transfers used for the Blu-rays.

How do others see the originaltrilogy.com community?
Time

All though they're the minority I wonder out of all those quotes calling ot.com full of nutjobs, how many have benefited directly from this site by people like DJ, Harmy, Adywan et al sharing their work?

I've been registered here since 2006 and lurked before that and while I don't remember how I heard about this place I do distinctly remember hearing originaltrilogy.com being full of hardcore fanboys - in a very negative context. But I actually took the time and looked around for myself and found that not to be the case.

If you can ignore some of the vitriol from the occasional troll and a resident nut job or two it's actually a really really informative place with loads of helpful and technically proficient people.

It turns out when you yourself are a hardcore fanboy and there are people in direct opposition with you, you paint them with your own brush.

^^

It's already being seeded on the spleen.

Thanks for the art Harmy. I was one of those that made the request. I couldn't be bothered with three different covers and one case saves space.

I was already in the process of making my own trilogy cover before you posted this. Can I be a pain in the butt and ask what is the font you used on the spines of this and the individual covers?

Maybe not that extreme. But we'll never see the OUT in the quality it deserves. The damage has been done. They were already deteriorating when GL started making the SE, and 20 more years' worth of damage has been done to these movies. It pisses me off that of all the Blu-rays that will be released in the coming years, the OUT will never be there. We shouldn't resort to preserving these films ourselves, something every film studio has done to all movies that have survived to this day, but LFL ignores because they can't tell they are making a new movie every few years based on the OT, and telling people it is SW, and saying you can go fuck yourself if you don't agree with GL. It's like watching your children slowly die of cancer. I know some of you are going to be upset about that, but that is roughly what is happening to these movies. The quality of these Blu-rays is utter shit and no one can say that because LFL has a gun to their head and telling them to say only good things about this release. Did anyone expect this nightmare scenario 25 years ago? No. No one seems to understand this: I wouldn't be so upset here, on this website, if GL had done the proper work in the first place fuck up the OT with all these SE changes.  ... Deleted... And he continues to show no remorse.

Frevious.

Fixed.

Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD - V3.1
Time

Isn't that predetermined by the data you're burning? I was never given an option to choose the layer change point (using IMGburn), and I didn't notice it changing over distractingly in the middle of a scene or anything. These seem to play perfectly as they are man, I'd say you're good to go once they're DL'ed as they stand without any additional tinkering or bullshit.

Ok, that's why I asked. I didn't want to be in the middle of a scene and find a noticeable pause when the layer change occurs.

If people aren't having a problem with this then I guess neither will I.

edit: Thanks :)

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

People now have this set in hand and while I appreciate the reviews of the changes, picture quality, soundtracks, deleted scenes and other special features there's one thing I must know - what is the costumers feature like. I MUST. KNOW.

It is of utmost importance. I've been waiting for like forever to hear about this.
