I’d say George actually understands that perfectly. His whole way of creating poetry is different than how most see it. He likes taking an idea and changing the contexts around it to give a deeper meaning within another part of the story. Along with creating visual symmetry between the two trilogies. You can also slowly see the Republic be remade into the image of the Empire through shapes and design. He sees poetry more as lyrics to a song than as a literal prose the Sequel Trilogy mostly takes it to mean. He also writes his dialogue in a very similar way. He has tones he’s aiming for instead of dialogue that’s more modern in presentation. He uses the old fashioned style versus what is considered the normal for an audience today. He finds contemporary storytelling boring.

Examples within Dialogue:

“Your lightsabers will make a fine addition to my collection.” = Intimidation

“It’s only because I’m so in love.” = Devotion

Example within Narrative Poetry: Anakin/Vader physically or emotionally wounds Padme and Luke. Both reach out to Obi-Wan. Luke through the Force. Padme directly by asking him if Anakin is okay. Then you also have the most profound part for me - Luke and Leia are being born at the same time as though Luke and Leia are communicating through the Force when Leia checks if Luke is okay and rescues him. Just as Padme does with checking with Obi-Wan if Anakin is okay and Obi-Wan is rescuing her by taking her somewhere safe. It’s also happening while Anakin is being reborn as Darth Vader and losing his grip as Darth Vader as he spares the Imperial Officers when the Millennium Falcon escapes. Just as Padme is losing her will to live and giving life. The sequence ends with Anakin in his last words before being fully reborn as Darth Vader are of asking if Padme is safe. And naturally Padme’s last words in between are her belief there’s good in Anakin. This carries over to Luke. He keeps Padme’s hopeful belief in Anakin going after being scarred by him as she was but the difference is he survived. She didn’t. Her legacy did though. His journey of saving his father is rooted in his connection with his mother. In a way Leia takes more after Anakin personality wise but Luke takes after Padme in personality. In a more beautifully haunting way of putting it, one life begins as another passes.

I like that the older EU is still in print and can be found on bookstore shelves and libraries . A lot of good stuff , a lot of bad and some mediocre stuff out there both old and new . My personal favorite EU story is the original Marvel Star Wars comics issues 58-63 from 1982 , detailing the rebels finding a new base on a forest world ( second guessing ROTJ for the second time ) and the Shira Brie arc . I consider those 6 issues to be like a movie in my head and would love to see an animated " legends " movie adaptation in the style of the DC animated movies . Also liked the first Dark Empire series , but only the first one . The OG Thrawn Trilogy , Tales Of The Jedi , I, Jedi and The New Jedi Order . From the new stuff , I enjoyed Bloodline by Claudia Gray , Rey’s survival guide , Empire’s End Trilogy by Chuck Wendig , Some of the Vader comics and Doctor Aphra , The Lando comic series and The Obi-Wan and Anakin comic

as a forum member on this here site that was founded with the goal of preserving the original theatrical releases of the Original Trilogy , I have to vote a big NO . As a " Special Edition " which is what they should have remained as an alternative viewing experience to the originals , the only changes to ESB for that I liked were the cleaned up matte lines /transparency issues and also the views outside the windows on Cloud City , as that was depicted in Ralph Mcquarrie’s concept art and production paintings . But , as said on these boards a million times …no one would have an issue with them if we had a high quality High Def release of the originals .

I dislike that its still not available on a modern high definition format in its original form after all these years .

Yeah , it’s an interesting opinion Malgus presents and I think he is presenting it in the right place . I had no problem following Vader’s trajectory when I saw the OT during its original run however , I understood that years had past between the first two films and by ROTJ , I could understand Vader’s motivations and inner conflict .I didn’t need the prequels to understand any of that . I did have a curiousity to see what made him turn to the dark side though ,built up in interviews in various publications at the time . Some of it came to pass and some of it was flawed in execution. Every kid in the 80s knew his back story as the one where he battled Kenobi over a molten pit and fell in ,to crawl his way out of that fiery pool , to paraphrase what was said in publications that were labelled official , such as Star Wars Official poster monthly and even a George Lucas interview in Rolling Stone . Instead , we get Kenobi chopping his limbs off and leaving him at the edge of the lava flow ,to scream and burn to death as he turns his back on him .The damage is done though ,and I hope the Kenobi show addresses it , but I think the OT stands just fine on its own .

Of course it goes for everybody , although, the title of this topic thread implies a solicitation of opinion . Though I disagree with most of what Stardust is putting forth here , he is giving his opinion and he has a right to it . I first read them when Dark Horse comics collected them in the late 90s in a two issue series with the odd title of Devilworlds . I hade been aware of them for years but this was my first chance to read them here in the U.S. I liked them and my favorite was the Story Dark Lord’s Conscience where he played an odd sort of chess game called fire path with a Cthulu like being ( Who Borgullet from Rogue One reminded me of ) . I think that story had the best art out of them . I also liked the Bizzare Tilotony throws a shape and being a fan of the original Marvel comic run , it finally gave an explanation for Leia having a broken leg in issue 35 ,though it’s probably just a coincidence , it’s in my head canon .Overall , they were interesting and surreal stories off the beaten path and fun to finally see , as were all of the other U.K. stories that took decades to be published here .

I have this set of the letterbox tapes and they come from the same video master as the Japanese Special Collection, the same as the US first issue widescreen laserdisc releases. With the same misframed image to fit the Japanese subtitles which aren’t on the video but they never corrected them.

Jedi is the worst effected. And it wasn’t corrected until the remastered THX releases which began with the definitive laserdisc collection and faces laserdisc, and also the widescreen tapes.

^ I bought that set when it first came out , would often tell people who were against the black bars on the top and bottom that this was the directors intent and that when watching fullscreen 4x3 movies , you were only seeing a portion of the whole image , a movie screen is rectangular , not square . They would look at me in complete bewilderment . Funny how things changed over time . I still have all the tapes as well as the book and certificate it came with , but lost the box and my TESB tape in a move . You are right , its not rare , and it pisses me off that people are artificially inflating the price of this set on Ebay . I would like to replace what I lost . The same thing is starting to happen with the prices of the red hi-fi label individual tapes . What makes me laugh the most is when I see articles about " The most valuable vhs tapes of all time " , and they show a picture of the 95 faces fullscreen box set , which is literally the most common and widely available set out there .

Showing the actual clone war on screen, the purge of the Jedi by Vader. All the things hinted at during the filming of the OT.

^ yup , and I will add , Anakin telling Obi Wan that he wanted Luke to have his Lightsaber when he was old enough , Anakin falling into a molten pit while dueling Kenobi being an accident, rather than getting his arm and legs chopped off by him in self defense after which he stands there and leaves him burning to death , the Clone Wars being plural and happening on screen and not just the start and the end of them , with the rest being filled in by a cartoon . These were the things that stirred the imaginations of my friends and myself in the 80s while playing out the scenarios with our action figures in the sandbox and talking about them .

and Qui Gon was a late addition to The Phantom Menace , a lot of concept paintings by Doug Chiang show that It was just supposed to be Obi Wan by himself . He is even depicted wearing a modified version of Luke’s Jedi tunic , which was what many thought the traditional garb of the Jedi was supposed to be . And 20 years is not that long in the scheme of things …I am 50 years old and remember events from 20 years ago in vivid detail ."a certain point of view " was just something Lucas pulled out of his ass when he backed himself into a corner writing ROTJ , as was Leia being the other/Luke’s sister , as evidenced in the documentary From Star Wars To Jedi The Making Of A Saga .

That was cool to view , thank you ! Wow , seems like the Holdo Maneuver in TLJ was lifted from the ROTJ storyboards ! I have the OT storyboards book but don’t remember those two shots being in it . Will have to take another look .

I have had these feelings on and off throughout my life . At times it was due to situational depression . Something a friend said to me years ago actually helped a bit , he said , " maybe it’s not you that’s fucked up ,maybe it’s the world . " another thing that has helped me in recent years is that 5 years ago , I suffered from a severe systemic infection and lost my lower right lobe of my right lung to it , as well as being diagnosed with type 2 adult onset diabetes . I almost died and it took me a year to recover . It was hard to find motivation to do anything for a bit , I knew I had to do what exercise I could to get my strength and blood sugar under control and found the solution in music …uplifting , motivational music . I started out by just walking for 15 minutes at a time and within a few months I could do a full aerobic work out and use light dumbells . I would suggest talking to your doctor about what kind of exercise you can do …it takes a while to get going as well as a bit to feel the results ,but it gives one a healthy dose of endorphins which can vastly improve ones mood and outlook . I am also here if you need someone to talk to . Feel free to pm me .

It worked , thank you . It was an interesting read . I also found it peculiar that George’s sequel treatments that have recently come to light ,if true , would have heavily used ideas from the conception of NJO ,while at the same time , cribbing heavily from the old EU and placing characters out of their original time and context , like Darth Talon etc .

for most of the past year , my main way of watching them has been either the 92 VHS letterbox versions or the full screen "faces " Vhs set , all on CRT televisions linked together with a soundbar hooked up to one , computer speakers to the other with a long aux cord running to the back of the room from those computer speakers, and going to either my Sony boombox ,or , lately , a portable speaker . I created my own thrifty little surround sound system and have gotten a lot of enjoyment from watching this way .

That’s a good way of approaching it. Star Wars is like a buffet. You enjoy what you like and leave the rest for others. It’s not really worth it to get caught up in which stories are canon or not, since they’re all works of fiction, anyway. The old EU’s “softer” approach to canon, with the different tiers and all that, was more supportive of that “buffet” mindset, since you could take or leave individual stories based on what you preferred. Disney canon is more monolithic by comparison, though that may be starting to change now with stuff like Visions and the KOTOR remake.

yup , it is like a buffet , and with the current canon , I also take or leave individual stories based on what I prefer ,as I do with the old EU .
