I’ve lingered here for a few years, joined a while ago, and this is my first post. I am doing so for two reasons. One to express how awesome your artwork is, and the fact that it was pirated AND sold is just disgraceful and disgusting. My sympathies for that.
Second, I finally am getting around to creating my own box set, and rather than use the art someone else provided I decided to make my own. Especially since this happened to your set and I would hate to use another case someone else made that may or may not be from said actual person posting it. But, that’s it. Your work is awesome, and it inspired me to get off my lazy arse and create my own. Cheers, mate!

Thanks so much. Very kind of you to say. I will someday post the sleeves (but not the box).

But that said, the kind of slow down you’re describing sounds like the throttling effect that happens when you have downloaded a large amount of data.

Maybe try waiting a day or two to give your isp quota a chance to recharge?

And are you waiting about 6-8 hours between sets of ten files to prevent such throttling in the first place?

That could very well be it. I HAVE been downloading the files in order and since everything was fine until the TESB extras, it could be my ISP throttling my usage. Good call!

I only download during the day though, so I’ve been giving it at LEAST 8 hours rest every night… more during the week since I’m at work during the day. Perhaps they’re throttling based on overall usage?

How heavy is the card stock use to create the boxes?

If you didn’t have card stock to create the slipcases, what did you use?

It’s not card stock. It’s chip board. This is thick, thick stuff. You can buy it on Amazon…

But I am curious about the digital material you used for your “Making of Star Wars” Disc.

What documentaries did you use for content?

Well, that’s the issue. I’ve been having trouble burning the disc. Half the content is HD, the rest SD. I’ve tried burning it several times and the SD content keeps getting stretched across the screen instead of pillboxing the sides. It’s extremely frustrating.

At any rate, here’s the content:

Original Star Wars casting videos (about 90 minutes)
Robert Guenette’s three docs on the three films
From Star Wars to Jedi: the making of a saga
The Star Wars Holiday special
John Williams - Creating the score for ESB
Outtakes from all three films.

I’m also still finetuning the sleeve, which is why I indicated its a WIP.

Best,
Ron

Follow up on the making of disc. I was way too ambitious in the content. I ended up culling it down to the auditions along with a great video I found on YouTube of the MidAmerica WorldCon, a panel from a 1976 convention with Gary Kutrz, Mark Hamill and Charles Lipponcott. Really fascinating seeing them explain what a “light sword” is!

What kind of sticker paper did you use for the box? When I made mine I used sticker paper with a matte finish, and I like the way it feels, but sometimes the colors aren’t very vibrant. Do you have any suggestions for some better sticker paper? Thanks!

I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on glossy sticker paper. None of them work. If the stock looks good, then the adhesive is weak and begins peeling off within hours.

I gave up on adhesive printer paper. I decided to go with regular glossy printer paper and used the rubber cement dry mounting method. You can Google it, but essentially you apply rubber cement to both surfaces, let them both dry. Then the resulting dry mount is SUPER sticky. Only drawback is you have to position perfectly; there’s no re-positioning once the two surfaces touch their adhesives. I have not checked, but I’m sure there are dozens of videos explaining it on youtube.

Ron

Packaging looks absolutely fantastic Ron, the kind of set this film deserves - like Warners Ultimate Collectors editions of Wizard of Oz, but with the dial turned up to 11!

In terms of pillarboxing, I sometimes find the best option is to hardcode the pillarbox bars into the video so that everything is 16x9 - just removes any doubt that the player / tv is going to try and stretch to fill the sceen.

Thanks. Any idea of how to hardcode a movie file on a Mac?

Hello everyone. I’m excited to share my ultimate Star Wars box set 2.0. It’s even more ambitious than the first version.

As a professional art director, I take the design very seriously. This includes the letter spacing and kerning, matching the original typography, good or bad, as closely as possible. I’m obsessed with it. Sometimes I’ll see someone elese great sleeve design, only to have it wrecked by imperfect kerning or a font which is not true to the original trilogy. I’ve striven to be as close to the original marketing as possible.

Before anyone asks, I will be sharing the sleeve cases only at some point. Without further ado, the pictures…

First, the new slipcase. Unlike version 1.0, it is not a double slipcase. However, I’ve built it on thicker chipboard, so it is more solid and sturdy.

slipcases

Next, new & improved sleeves. The cover logos are a bit closer ot the theatrical posters now. Also now feature the official taglines from each film. Printed on a new paper stock, double sided glossy, which holds the fine lines of the text better.

sleeves

The new extras include miniature stickers replicating the early pins released 1977. And the big new addition: a reproduction of the original program book at a scaled down size. Tried to match the glossy stock as best as I could as well.

anh

In the Empire case, I have the returning mini-poster reproductions along with an invite and credit brochure handed out at the advance previews in 1977, including a reproduction of the typewritten invite on Star Wars letterhead. Also, exact copies of the early Star Wars fan club membership cards, one of which was completely recreated from scratch.

empire

In the Jedi case, we have a reproduction of the cover of Marvel Comics Star Wars #1, along with my original Topps cards featuring myself, Harmy and original poster art.

jedi

And a new addition,a WIP of The Making of Star Wars, based on the cover of the excellent book. Inside this case is a painstaking recreation of the original 1977 press kit, including the typewritten letter and press materials from the studio, tear sheets for the film and all the black & white AND color lobby cards from the movie.

Again, while I won’t be releasing all the files this time (blame the pirates!!!), expect the sleeves to be posted soon. Enjoy!

Dealing with People Selling Fan Projects

JohnStewart said:

You people crack me up. You F* around with copyrighted material then you cry when you see people selling the s*! Just stop, ok you make yourselves look stupid. Maybe if you made the “free” versions easier to get the masses out there would not resort to paying for them. Not to mention it might not be wise to keep brining undo attention to this site as well. I had no problem getting these but to your average non computer person its a pretty difficult task.

What about me designing a box set and posting the files online for free, only to see someone selling them?

As for the movies, WORK for them. I didn’t know what uloz or myspleen was. I figured it out. I wanted it badly enough that I put in the research. I didn’t beg others to send me the files.

Then as repayment to the community, I designed a box set and put it all online for free. That’s my labor, my design that I shared for FREE and some asshole is printing them out and selling them on eBay. Damn right I’m reporting them.

I also had to remove my designs to try to stop the profiteering. So some assholes ruin it for EVERYBODY.

A few months ago I created a custom box set, cases and goodies for Harmy’s Despecialized Editions. I even made a set for Harmy.

Since I’ve also created other versions of the Bluray cases, I decided to make a new thread for just my designs. I’ll add more here as I design them. Future cases include Despecialized prequels and of course cases for the new trilogy.

NOTE: While I’m happy to provide download links for all my designs, please do not repost elsewhere without attribution. Also, these are meant to be FREE. Please do not create sets for sale using my designs.

Thank you!
Ron

Has anything changed sense you posted this??? 😦 no artwork is better than the ones you took down that were in harmys unboxing video and I want to use them. NOT SELL LIKE THOSE IDIOTS

There are no plans to repost these files. There’s a slim chance I do a future run of the entire set, sans discs. If I do, I will post here. Please do not PM me about this boxset.

best,
Ron

I’m new to the forums and it seems that I’ve just missed being able to download the files for this beautiful box set (I’m crying on the inside (╥_╥) ), but I just wanted to stop by and say how impressed I am with your work ronwlim. I’m sorry the ebay vultures had to ruin the party as usual, but I completely understand why you pulled them. These are stellar sir and you should be VERY proud of them.

Ron, will you be doing another production run of your set once you update your covers?

I doubt it, but you never know.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Since he’s using some artwork I created, I’ve reported him as well. It’s guys like this that made me pull my box set off the web. They really ruin it for everyone.

I’m not sure if this is the appropriate place for this, but since I’ve seen discussions regarding ebay sellers in this thread I thought I’d ask.

The above seller has listed a very expensive set of Harmy’s Despecialized edition blu-ray’s at the link above (at least he credited Harmy I guess…). From the looks of it, he has sold quite a few. Does the community actively look for and report these sellers? And if so, where would one post links in the forum for others to report them?

Ronwlim,

We understand and no need to explain or to justify your prices. Sharing your files with everybody was more than generous.

Believe me, if I was in this for the money, I could keep making these. I stopped at the initial five I offered 18 months ago. I have a wait list of 8 names if I ever decided to make more.

DIY! It’s the most satisfying. Google how to burn discs and make your own box. There are so many tutorials on methods on YouTube.

Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set (Released)
Time

I went ahead and made myself a set. It has cost me about 125+ to make with professional printing, buying criterion cases, the blank blu-rays, etc… I asked ronwlim here on the site to see if he could make the same box set that he has produced and he quoted me $200. So to ask for $200 isn’t that unreasonable.

I think your post is misleading.

You forgot to mention that I was only selling the bluray cases and the box set I designed. I specifically said it did not include the discs. I’ve also been quite clear that the price is only so high because the boxes are a pain in the ass to make, so I price it high as both a deterent for you to buy, worthwhile for me to make and encouragement for you to DIY, since I’ve made all my files available for free.
