Tomorrow seems like a meaningless day to mark a release of a restoration. It’s not actually related to anything that is Star Wars related.
Anyone expecting any kind of announcement is just asking to be disappointed.

Back to the 4k restorations. Since we know that the SE versions are preserved, but not sure when those will come out, there are plans for fan restorations of those also.
SE prints are relatively easy to find. Expect some news on the 4K SE of Star Wars in the other forums on OT
at some point. Sure, not everyone cares for those, but there are still people that enjoy them, and would like
those preserved also.

I’ve taken the raw files and tried to improve a few things with them.
*Removed duplicate frames from reel1
*gout-synced all the reels into 1 file
*tried to set better b/w points, improve contrast
*increased saturation
*There was AN ATTEMPT to color correct to the PRINT ITSELF.
*included the 1977 mono and stereo dts tracks from Harmy’s Despecialized.
The encode should be blu-ray compatible. I’ve encoded at such a high bitrate to help retain grain. All colors and levels adjustments are a single pass correction.
I’ve also included the avisynth script used to create this so if you have the raw files that were available awhile back then you could recreate this or try to improve upon it.
This can be found on the usual sharing site (Myspleen).
There will be scans of all the SE versions at some point in time. Star Wars will be the first.
The Prequels will also be addressed eventually too.

The source files still exist, but no further work was done on them.
Stills are posted from the original sample video files mentioned earlier. These were shown at industry shows, and to other vendors in the video restoration field. The source files I have are 1080p, which were scaled down from 4k. Of course, to protect the sources, they will remain anonymous.
The source clips in the Vimeo link are from the same source, with the same scenes. However, they did not post the Grain comparison clips.
All clips are WIP. Whether they finished them or not is unknown.
Most mentions of the SE, and since then refer to a private Technicolor print used by Lucasfilm.

In fact, it was a private print lent to them for use in color reference.
The current 4k Technicolor scans are being used in private projects, one of which was started on OT,
but the thread is locked, and moved to a private forum. All these projects are hybrids of multiple sources
used to overcome the shortcomings of just one print.
The grain removal tests are decent. There are also black and white test shots too.
Some seem a little too scrubbed though. Also, note the color correction is not
that consistent.
The stories of a personal Technicolor reference for Star Wars, is actually the
same one from a private individual who lent it to Lucasfilm, since they didn’t
have one available at the time. This print is the one that has been scanned
and is the basis for current fan restorations in 4k.

Yes, the flashes are the same as the ones from the SE, so that is definitely a sign confirming the SE.

I can’t confirm the Star Wars clips are from the SE, since they don’t contain those scenes,
however in most likely scenarios, they are in my opinion.
I will post some other shots from them, and more from the ESB clips.
They aren’t publicly available in the higher bitrates, and are scaled down to 1080p.

2016 saw big growth in the number of 4K televisions in consumer homes, and the introduction of the 4K Blu-ray disc. DEG says there were 10 million 4K UHD TVs sold in the US last year. As well, 300,000 4K UHD Blu-ray players were sold. By the end of 2016, there were 110 UHD Blu-ray titles available, with another 250 promised by the end of this year.
Despite all this positive news, disc sales and rentals continued to plummet. Disc sales were down 9.6% on the year (to $5.5B), a slightly better performance than the 12.5% decline in 2015. However, physical rentals were dramatically lower, with store rentals down 21% and kiosk transactions down 17%. Last year they both fell 11% and 9.5% respectively. The entire physical disc rental market spend was $2.5B, down from $5B in 2011.

😃 This shouldn’t be a problem: it probably means that more people are spending on digital downloads rather than on physical media, but 4K movies will still be released no matter what.
Actually, all sales are trending downwards, even though there are spikes in formats.
Not all movies will get the 4k treatment though, and studios do look at numbers before evaluating
what gets released.
Sure, there may be 4k releases of comedies, and dramas, and thrillers, but that’s not the category here.

Getting back on topic with 4k restoration. (Maybe someone can post a separate thread to move all the Celebration speculation out).
The shots did not have SE elements in them, but in all likelihood, they were SE ones.
Working on the fan 4k77 will get pretty good results, and there will definitely be more
options than an official release.

Just to add to the post about the 4k scans, there are samples of the tests on the Scans for Star Wars, and Empire Strikes Back.
Both samples have grain reduction tests, and some are grayscale. The colors have been altered from the GOUT.
These were shown at several trade shows, and other industry shows which was the source of them.
