Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!
Time

I decided to test it out last night on the Criterion & Arrow versions of Dress To Kill. Caps were grabbed from DVDBeaver.

Here's the Criterion Blu-Ray.

Here's the Arrow Blu-Ray.

Here's the Criterion Blu-Ray Color Matched to the Arrow Blu-Ray.

Other than a slightly pinker shade to Michael Caine's skin tone, the corrected image looks very accurate to the Arrow Blu-Ray.

First of all, props to all the hard work you've put into these releases. I appreciate it.

As far as color correcting goes,

1) The 97SE takes on a light purple tint.

2) The workprint seems more beige.

3) Blu-ray takes on a light blue tint.

4) The "New Colors" seems like an effort to combine all of the tints together.

Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't, but overall I think it's the best you can do short of painstakingly color correcting every single shot.

Methods for colour matching/colour grading

Both of those 2 previous methods look interesting, especially the java program that has built-in automation.

As far the PureImage front goes, I'm still trying to figure out what to do. I can create most of what I need to do using a simple Search and Replace in Notepad ++. The hard part is figuring out how to replace frame numbers in the ping images. I found a program (payware) called Advanced Find and Replace that has a feature called Cycilic Replace From File that looks like it could be the trick. Unfortunately the program costs $30.

Here's a video demonstration.

Youtube:

Megaupload

Download video is 1280x720p H264 in MKV. I recommend VLC Player or Mplayer.

Here are the images. SW3 is Dark Jedi's. swtech is Lee Thorogood's. swXXXX are the pureimage conversions.

The PureImage trial version leaves a message at the bottom, but that can easily be removed by using crop() and addborders() in avisynth since it's only in the black bar area.

I was able to find a way to automate pureimage.using a program called AutoHotKey in a small test of 11 frames.

It's a program that automatically records keyboard, mouseclicks, and mouse movement and creates a script that can be called automatically.

Together with a batch file using the delete, move, and rename commands I was able to process 11 frames automatically. It's pretty slow though. But at least it's automatic.

It will take more work to setup a batch file to process an entire movie. I might be able to do something using Notepad++ or another similar tool.

AutoHotKey is free and open source. I used version 1.0.47.06. You can download it here. http://www.autohotkey.net/programs/AutoHotkey104706_Install.exe

Which version/release of the Star Wars movies do you watch and why?

Out of interest, what is it about the GOUT-sourced versions that you find objectionable?

Although Harmy's versions are probably my preferred option too at the moment, they are not without their own problems.

The Low-rez mostly. That and all the smearing and aliasing. It doesn't look good on an HDTV in the living room since the LCD HDTV brings out all the problems that come with a low-rez source.

If I had a CRT, it wouldn't look as bad. CRT's have a way of making harsh sources look better than they actually are. Unfortunately, nobody sells new CRT HDTV's anymore.

The only versions I actually watch in my living room are Harmy's Despecialized versions. They are the only versions that replicate the OUT while looking good on my HDTV screen.

I also like Dark_Jedi and LeeThorogood's Technicolor Gout sourced versions, but I simply cannot watch them on my HDTV without shaking my head.  They're great for normal CRT's though.
