OFFICIAL: Library of Congress had original prints replaced with 1997 SE

Nosferatu

Nosferatu

What's interesting is how the world almost lost the chance to see Nosferatu at all. Unfortunately for production company Prana Films, this unlicensed adaptation of Dracula was too thinly veiled, and Florence Stoker, widow of the late Bram Stoker, sued with the help of lawyers from the British Incorporated Society of Authors.

However, Stoker and the BISA weren't the only people pursuing Prana-Films: Prana was a sinking ship running aground on a financial reef. Just as the BISA sued Prana, it went into receivership and all materials and debts were taken over by the Deutsch-Amerikansch Film Union. The BISA then pursued the Film Union and demanded that all copies of Nosferatu be surrendered. In July 1925, the issue was settled and all known copies of Nosferatu were handed over to Stoker, and destroyed.

Or so Stoker thought. In October of that year, the Film Society in England asked her to endorse a classic film festival, and first on the list was the infamous Nosferatu. Stoker was furious and demanded that the Society give her their copy, but the Film Society refused and legalities followed. By 1928 Universal Pictures owned the screen rights for Dracula, and therefore all adaptations of it, including Nosferatu. Initially, Universal allowed the Film Society to keep the print, but after pressure from Florence Stoker they acquired the print, and it joined its departed kin in 1929. Then came a sudden spurt of American copies of the film under the name Nosferatu the Vampire, but Universal had them all destroyed in 1930. It finally seemed as though this pesky film had met its end.

This was not the case though. Following Florence Stoker's death in 1937, copies of the film started cropping up again, as if the celluloid itself was among the immortal undead.

Nosferatu truly regained its popularity in 1960 due to American television screenings, and in 1972 Blackhawk Films released the uncut original to the collector's market as Nosferatu the Vampire, which brings us up today. Now, due to it's availability via the Public Domain, it's damn near impossible to find a DVD horror collection that doesn't have a copy of Nosferatu!

See the hole thing here.

My mistake. The thing used in Rescuing Star Wars look a lot like this thing http://www.google.com/imgres?q=Transfer+Telecine&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&tbm=isch&tbnid=fnOeRoYUETF2EM:&imgrefurl=http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php%3Ft%3D120560&docid=_wdHC8l3HpZu7M&w=1053&h=898&ei=lHaETp2rMcihtwfUpOlE&zoom=1&biw=1254&bih=580&iact=rc&dur=967&page=5&tbnh=169&tbnw=206&start=49&ndsp=10&ved=1t:429,r:9,s:49&tx=62&ty=77to me.

To Puggo

From what I understand you’re transfer uses a video camera pointed at a slow projection?

This is good for getting to 16mm projection look.

But what I meant was a scan of the film sell it self.

to

Mavimao

Ok so 16mm prints of 70s films are of some of the lowest quality prints in existence.

That would mean that ESB and ROTJ would be better as they are 80’s films

But you said that

most 35 and 70mm prints of 70s films are pink faded and missing feet of film.

That being the case for STAR WARS

we need to make HD scans of every print we ever fined. Be it 16mm, 8mm, 35mm or 70mm

And with hope and a lot of work it may be possible to put together the best of all prints.

And I would not say that the print is a

turd.

Mistaken for toilet paper maybe but not a turd.

Just because it's film doesn't make it a holy grail of quality. So people have to remember that the puggo 16mm projects are an interesting, and I find, highly enjoyable project. But if you're looking for a pristine copy of the OT... Get harmy's despecialized or Dj's gout project.

I understand that a 16mm print is not the best.

But is it not better then 8mm?

We all know the best thing would be a scan of a 35mm or 70mm print.

But even it we had a 35mm or 70mm print.

We do not have a scanner for it.

But there is a better chance of finding an HD,

16mm or 8mm film scanner that is privately owned by some one that could scan it and “ avoid any Empyreal entanglements”.

I know the 16 and 8 mm prints would be littered with dust and scratches. But this could be cleaned up in a computer.

Of course doing this for the hole 3 movies may seem like to much work, it could still be used in part for projects like Harmy's Despecialized Edition . For ROTJ It could be use to get an HD copy of Lapti Nek.

Also not the same thing but similar :-)

Well in the case of your Despecialized Edition

It would be funny to do a making of how the digital enhancements where digitally removed. Fore example the 1997 VHE tells a bout removing the orange blob under the land speeder, well for this tell you tell about restoring it.

The opening would go like this

In 1997 producer director

George Lucas created the Star Wars trilogy special Edition

And changed the way we watched Star Wars.

Years later using advanced

digital video editing software, Harmy has restored these classics to there original form to create the Star Wars trilogy Despecialized Edition.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

One last thing.

I remember seeing a split screen comparison of DVD and Blu ray in a store. I know fore shore they did there best to make the DVD look its worst. But to me the blu ray was almost to clear. With such a hi resolution you could have seen every things Even things that you should not see.

Like strings making people fly or mat lines.

I don't have a BluRay player for many reasons.

I do not want to torcher my self! If blu ray is so much better than DVD

Than it would be torcher ever time I had to use DVD after getting accustomed to blu ray.

And even if I had an the $$$$$$$$$$$ to buy all the BluRay movies I ever wanted. I still would not be able to fined over have the movies I now have on DVD. And even with DVD I still every now and than have to go to VHS for movies that do not have DVD’s.

I do have a HD LCD TV but it is a 32” 7:20P and with up scaling and the right settings I can make the GOUT look slightly better then one of those old SD Projection TV’s.

The reason I got the HD LCD TV was because, I hade always wanted a big screen tv but in the small room I had I could only put a 20” 4:3 CRT. And will

Letterbox on a 20” 4:3 looks like… will you know.

I do have 5.1 surround sound. Well 5.0 surround sound I cant have a sub woofer in the building I live in.

Idea: 35mm Transfer - make a preservation project from it?
Time

stupid

Question?

We know that there are 16mm prints of the OT.

If they where scanned in HD could they be used for fixing crushed blacks?

I know they are cropped but if you combine GOUT and 2004 DVD and maybe blu ray could you get something that look good?

I know a 35mm Transfer would be the best but would the be a better chance of finding some one that could scan the 16mm. Seeing how the 16mm is legal to own.

Well unfortunately do to family complications. I will not get to go to Wal-Mart at midnight tonight. To bad I was looking forward to NOT buying the blu rays.

But if any of you fined your self at Wal-Mart at midnight tonight.

Stand buy the big cardboard display and tell any one that is going to buy it.

“You do not want to buy these blu rays.”

“ They are not the films your looking for.”.

Hi,
here are some screenshots. I saved them as jpegs to reduce the file size. As I said it is heavy on the red but while tinkering with it I got some good resuts.

Hope this works.
