I made my own cut which had the goal of changing as little as possible from the Donner Cut, except to remove obvious 21st century technology and a couple other things. Many, many people have tried to make the best cut out of the two versions. And I think all those projects are great. But if I’m going to watch a cut, it’ll generally be the Lester cut I grew up with. The goal for my edit was just to get the Donner Cut into a form that I find watchable, but I do not try to correct the ideas for the cut itself. This means:
There are many impressive S2 fan edits out there, but sometimes I feel like they tinker too much. I REALLY like towne32’s fanedit for only ironing-out a few rough patches (especially the screen test footage and the ending). It’s really well-done – simple and effective (and my go-to version of the S2 now).
Of course, I understand the urge to tinker with these cuts, especially for dedicated fans (which I am) with film editing skills (which I lack!). For example, I wish the DC didn’t retain the shot of Zod levitating the shotgun. I believe there’s a fan edit that makes it look like Zod uses super-speed to retrieve the gun instead – that’s clever!
And while I like the memory kiss over repeating the end of S1, part of me wonders if the Supes/Lois storyline shouldn’t just end with the balcony breakup. Too depressing, I know… but narratively, it’s elegant.
