What do you want to happen in the the rest of the ST?
Time

With The Force Awakens mimicking the original Star Wars so much I’m not sure where else the story could go other than continue to copy the first three films.

I don’t want the rest of the Star Wars tropes to happen. Luke should live. Kylo should have no redemption. No more heroes getting their limbs cut off. No more super weapon surprises.

What I want is the best explanation in the universe for how the old heroes botched things up after Return of the Jedi. I suspect I won’t be getting any of that.

I also want the Empire to be completely and utterly defeated by the end. No sequel-sequel trilogy where they sneak off yet again to come back later.

(Spoilers)How could The Force Awakens have been more original?
Time

Get rid of the Death Star and don’t make the original heroes incompetents who let their child/student turn into the next Darth Vader. If anyone would have been wary of this type of thing, it would have been Leia, Han, and Luke.

Whatever antagonists that showed up should have come out of left field for the heroes. Not been one of their own that they nurtured.

My point with quoting and responding in this manner isn’t to be dickish. It’s to show that those points could easily be applied to the real world.

If we’re talking about how threats appear in Star Wars, I remember George Lucas saying there were parallels between U.S. foreign policy in Vietnam and Iraq when compared to the rise of and actions of the Empire. With a not-so-covert statement on it all in Revenge of the Sith. Rag-tag groups of terrorists/freedom fighters/insurgents weren’t the idea behind it.

Abrams has gone on to say the First Order are basically Nazis somehow rising out of their hideouts in Argentina. It didn’t happen in the real world and its equally implausible in the Star Wars universe.

If there’s a new trilogy after this one, I want a new threat. One that doesn’t diminish previous movies.

Had there actually been a new threat to the galaxy, rather than just the Empire with a public relations name change and a large bucket of black paint for their spaceships, it would have worked better for me.

As it is, somehow the Rebels didn’t really win and the Empire managed to sneak off and make an even bigger Death Star.

My hope for the final two movies of this sequel trilogy is that we do finally see an end to the Empire/First Order. No jumping off point to more sequels with Stormtroopers and black robed figures with red lightsabers. At least give me that.

I mentioned this in my review of the movie in the review thread, but this movie’s biggest sin is taking the happy ending of Return of the Jedi away. Effectively retconning it out of existence.

While I still like the movie for what it is, a Star Wars film made by fans of Star Wars, I’ll probably end up considering it along the likes of Expanded Universe tales. Old EU already ripped away the happy end to Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens is no different in that regard. The only difference is this tale is extremely expensive and stars (or cameos) the original protagonist actors.

Why were they able to see the Hosnian system get destroyed from Takodana? You’d think they’d be right on top of each other for that to make sense… but according to the new maps of the galaxy there is some considerable distance between the two systems.

I assume it will never be explained, but I will go ahead and say the hyperspeed laser light reaches other systems much faster than regular light. So its possible to see it as it happens.

Maybe it should have been pinpoints of light rather than a fireworks show, but that’s Star Wars for you.

Does everybody in the Star Wars galaxy understand droid beeps now? I could have sworn Luke required C-3PO to understand R2 when he wasn’t hooked into an X-Wing and giving text responses.

This bugs me too.

I assume its because there was no interpreter droid around and they had to keep the movie going, but it is a weird shift.

It’s going to take a lot to make Kylo Ren deserving of redemption in my eyes after what he’s done.

I doubt it will ever happen, but Chewie ought to be the one to kill him.

I can only see a redemption through death thing like Vader happening. Unless they say he’s brainwashed like the Stormtroopers and one movie is spent deprogramming him.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Just came back from the theater.

It was okay. Certainly not as good as the OT, but good enough for a sequel set so long after them. The film moved like one of the originals. A roller coaster ride of barely squeezing out of danger. Harrison Ford was good again as Han. I was a bit worried given that he just did not seem to care for acting over the past several years. The new cast was pretty good. Rey and Finn were acceptable as new heroes.

I do have my gripes. It is as if Return of the Jedi never happened as I’ve stated about my fears here before. Somehow the Empire/First Order is an actual credible threat and the Republic is so weak they just have a tiny “Resistance” force. The movie also rehashes the Death Star for the third time. Luke showing up for the last minute of the movie and not speaking did nothing for me, either.

I know Carrie Fisher in real life has her problems, but they’re unfortunately very visible in this movie. Her looks and voice changed so much its jarring coming from the original movies to this one.

What was with the advertising playing up the role of Captain Phasma? She did nothing. I suppose she is just like Boba Fett in RotJ. She said and did very little and had an ignoble end (unless she survived somehow).

I haven’t read it for good reason, not sure if it’s just the same as the MSW stuff or not.

It basically is.

If this is the story I have to say I’m glad I spoiled myself on it. I would not want to be surprised with this material. Its not worth it.

Where was this posted?

I saw a TFA coloring book at Walgreen’s last month, and avoided it like the plague. How accurately a coloring book can reflect the actual plot of a movie I have no idea.

Sorry. Not a coloring book actually. A kid’s “look and find” book. I guess like Where’s Waldo. Here’s the link to the images.

Last night images from a kid’s coloring book containing lots of plot details came out that basically verified everything from the Making Star Wars spoiler website plot summary for The Force Awakens.

Six months ago when I read the Making Star Wars spoilers I didn’t think they had legitimacy because the story sounded so weak, Luke is barely in it, and it contained yet more hero/villain family feuding drama.

I’m still going to see it, but everything about this movie appears to be a nostalgia trip with very brief baton passings from the original cast.

Didn't Yoda tell Luke to pass on what he learned in Return of the Jedi?

Han talks of the Jedi as if they're regarded as myth in the trailer.

Is this movie really making our heroes as lazy as I fear? 30 years on they're still fight imperial types and Luke has seemingly trained nobody else in the ways of the Force.

One off putting aspect of the trailer was the feeling of gloom and doom throughout. The characters were either serious, distressed or scared. I hope there are some lighthearted and fun moments in the film to lighten the mood a bit.

With what we've read of the Empire almost not existing I guess we're going to see a lot of antagonist success to make them appear an actual threat. So I'm expecting a gloomy movie.

I really hope Rey wasn't crying for the reason I think she was crying.

I suspect she's crying over Max Von Sydow's character biting it. Hopefully.

Looks like it's snowing though :(

I know. I'm hoping that's not the case.

Notice the scene with Luke and R2 in this trailer. Just after it you see Kylo's shuttle landing in what looks like the same fiery environment. I doubt Luke is running around where Kylo is at. So right now I'm of the mind that its not a snow scene. Just a similar looking one. I could be very wrong on this, of course.

Maybe an injured/dead Finn? He is seen fighting Kylo at the end. Might have got his arm chopped off.

My other thoughts. Same Luke scene we had with the second teaser. Nothing new with him.

The guys crowding around Kylo in the rain in the middle of the trailer are probably the other Knights of Ren.

No Snoke.

Lots of action sequences.

Looks like we wait two more months to find out anything else.

More concept art just got leaked. More spaceships. Said to be V-Wings, C-Wings, U-Wings, and an alternate X-Wing.

http://indierevolver.com/2015/10/18/ir-exclusive-some-early-looks-at-concept-art-of-the-ships-of-star-wars-the-force-awakens/

All the new ships appear to have astromechs. Again a return to nostalgia rather than going forward with the astromech-less designs of the A-Wing and B-Wing from Return of the Jedi.

I know it's something supposedly minor but am I the only one who is very disappointed at how bland the new Imperial, ahem, First Order vehicles look like?

The TIE/fo in particular (it's been practically confirmed that's the official name based on the X-Wing board game and Bandai's upcoming scale model), it's just a normal TIE-Fighter with some very minor detail alteration and negative colour scheme! White radiator/solar panels and black hull! ... Meh.

Some aircraft & spacecraft designs don't change very much over time. And the TIE is probably hard to improve on.

In the real world, B-52's are still flying, and Russia's still launching Soyuz space capsules.

I don't mind the design itself (in fact, I love TIEs) and you make a fair point.

What bothers me is that essentially they discarded the evolutionary path already established in RotJ with the TIE Interceptor and just went with a new paint job. One that also really screams "it's a toy!" to me.

I doubt we'll see any explanation as to why TIE Interceptors are missing in the movie. The real-life marketing taking precedence over continuity is already frustrating me with the Interceptor's exlcusion (among other things).

I've made up my own head-canon that the factories and plans for the TIE Interceptor were destroyed by the Rebels during the 30+ years between episodes.
