STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI &quot;REVISITED EDITION&quot;<strong>ADYWAN</strong> - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **
Time

Hey Ady, I have a question. My apologies if this has already been addressed, but in many of the cockpit shots (for example, when Wedge is about to fire on the tower of the reactor in the Death Star), the engines and ship parts outside in the background are fully lit the entire time, even when there are shadows appearing inside the cockpit, as if the ship is passing something. Will there be shadows added to the background elements as well?

Also, Return of the Jedi, being so incredibly ambitious for its time, shows its limitations today, in regards to the Death Star battle as a whole. One part that particularly stands out to me is the ships flying through the Death Star. Many times the ships give away that they are separately filmed from the backgrounds, since the lighting on the ships do not accurately reflect the changing of lighting throughout the scene.

An example off the top of my head: After Lando destroys the reactor and it explodes, he is still flying the Falcon within the large chamber, but when the Falcon enters the corridor it retains the same lighting, rather than darkening from exiting an open space (that is now filled with an epic explosion) into a more tighter area where light wouldn’t be as bright. I hope I’m making sense?

I’d imagine a lot of rotoscoping would be enough to fix these issues, rather than filming new elements, at least for most of the shots. Just a thought.

Per the WordPress site,
“Remove Yub Nub & Victory Celebration”

That must have been written waaaay back, during the briefest of times i was thinking of ending it on the funeral pyre. The ending is going to be pretty much the theatrical ending. NO planets, no Hayden, no Victory Celebration. I hate the SE planet celebrations and victory celebration music. Victory celebration sounds so out of place musically. Williams just basically ripped off the original animatic guide track ( and didn’t even bother to try and hide the fact) and it sounds so out of place in the OT. The guide track was for a Native American mini series and you can tell it still has that theme.

I don’t know mate. Just panning up from the funeral pyre and cutting to the credits would be epic. I always wanted to see that ending. And given that the galaxy falls back into darkness in the ST, it would be a little foreboding ending on that note. Sort of takes it from “the Empire has been destroyed” to “Darth Vader is destroyed”, and suggests the Empire will still be a threat in some form.

For years these threads have been full of comments like “Ady is isolating the OT from the prequels and his edits don’t have to adjust to them, it should be the other way around” or a variation of that.

So why does the OT have to keep the sequels in mind whatsoever now? I don’t mind at all if Ady wants to make the ending of ROTJ feel like an actual ending, with no hint one way or another toward the sequels.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 <strong>REVISITED</strong> ADYWAN *<em>1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION</em>
Time

This looks amazing in HD!!! Can’t wait to see it. The only thing that still bothers me is when the rebels are flying away after the Death Star explodes, the Falcon always looked like it was flying crooked, like it’s not facing completely forward. I don’t know if I’m explaining it well enough, but the trajectory and the ship’s angle don’t seem to match. This has bothered me even as a kid, pre-Special Edition. Everything else is perfect!

On the splizzeen there appears to be a new 3D release. I know nothing about it, but hoping it is superior to the old file from years back.

Let me know how it is if you get it. We can trade file sizes and see if it is the same one. The one I have starts with the text title card about the intro not being in 3D.

I had a chance to skim through it this afternoon. It does have the text title at the beginning. The 3D seems to have a bit more crosstalk than the older file, but it at least stays in full 3D throughout, instead of slowly becoming a 2D movie in a 3D window the way the older version did.

It is in the form of an ISO, sized 25.03, and luckily I still had a few 50GB discs stored away to burn. It’s a nice package. It even opens with the standard Paramount logo when the disc boots up, like a retail disc. It’s classy, I’ll give it that.

Fascinating. Mine was an mkv but I seem to recall a similar experience. I wonder which came first. I don’t know why more people aren’t dying for this or working to make it right. That said I do give this attempt props. It doesn’t look like the version that used the overseas DVD for one eye and Blu-ray for the other. It looked like a new source maybe even a print?

It’s definitely watchable, and I will be keeping the disc in my collection for sure. Hell, I might even print me a cover for it and toss it in a case to place on the shelf.

I highly agree that the demand for a retail release is surprisingly quiet. I’d say Jackass 3D is another one that I’d gladly buy if it were sold, but at the same time no one seems to ask for it.

Just as a test, here’s the beginning of the sail barge sequence with flipped shots put back:
https://vimeo.com/238829311
It’s more jarring than the original, without a doubt. Although, I do like that Mark Hamill’s face is flipped back to normal now. I think that’s the main giveaway.

Can’t say I found any issue with those shots flipped back, I followed along fine with where the barge was heading and the other ships location to it.

.Val

I believe that because we are so familiar with these scenes we feel like we can follow it fine with shots flipped back, but that’s like being able to walk along a well-known trail without having to watch every step we make because we’ve walked it so often.

If the movie were released with those shots unflipped, it would have hurt more than helped upon a first viewing.

A great example of showing how important the 180 degree rule is, is to watch the “film” that plays at the end of Super 8, the one made by the kid characters. There are intentional breaks of the 180 rule to make it feel like a true amateur film made by kids.

I don’t think these flipped shots were being pointed out as needing to be flipped back, but that certain elements in the shots can be corrected.

That’s my take on it, but I know a lot of people who never heard of the rule would jump to the conclusion of flipping it back, thinking that is the only way to fix it. Just wanted to explain it a bit to spread awareness. 😃

Most common reason a shot is flipped is to avoid breaking the 180 degree rule.

This is never the fault of the editor, as they have to work with the footage they have in order to make a scene work shot-to-shot. Breaking the 180 degree rule is far worse for flow of a scene than a reversed image, hence why they tend to pop up a lot in many movies. We only notice them more in Star Wars because we observe them repeatedly, much more than any other film.

I would not be opposed to seeing the deleted scenes restored and put into the missing places in the film.

For all the great counterpoints to why they should remain cut, I have to agree.

Ironically, I DO wish to see at least one shot of the Falcon turret gun operators added in during the battle. One could argue they are the least necessary of the deleted scenes, but I feel it lets us see the inside of the turrets again, and shows another rebel playing his part in the fight, and reminds us that the Falcon takes a team effort to be useful in a fight.

Any Hooo…
This is as much for AR:SE as for ROTJ:R, what with Rogue One having very polished reflective floors in key rooms is it possible or desirable to do something similar for Death Star interiors in other films?
The floors are quite reflective in both films but not to the same mirror effect of Rogue One and I quite liked the effect. It makes the rooms look other worldly and obsessively sterile and buffed. So many OT Death Star sets have dents and scratches and scuff marks. Jedi has some very tatty cobbled together sets which are kind of forgivable for the Rebels but not so much for the Empire.

Wouldn’t we need actual reflections of EVERYTHING to make the floor reflective?

Not necessarily accurate reflections. There is a loss of resolution with any reflective surface. What it would take would be someone to make a sample of what is already reflected, Create an abstract reconstruction of the reflection with a bit more detail and blend that with a black background and then rotoscope around the existing surface. It wouldn’t be a perfect mirror but it would be closer to the Rogue One look. Though it would also be a lot of hard work 😄

Eh, I can’t speak for ANH, but at least in ROTJ it can be assumed that it’s still a place under construction and they haven’t gotten around to polishing the floors yet. 😉

“…the story really is of a primitive society–apparently a weak society–who is able to overcome a very technological society.” GL.

Asymmetric warfare is what Lucas is touching upon with the Ewoks vs Stormtroopers (and a powerful and pertinent lesson that is, as we’ve seen in the past decades with the West struggling to combat the Taliban and Al Quaeda), but the fact that they are the “best” troops is actually neither here nor there. You can remove the declaration that they are the “best” elite legion of Stormtroopers and the sequence still admirably achieves the intended goal.

Adding more firepower to the Rebel Strike team actually would water down that intention.

The Ewoks water themselves down if anything. I think this is the reason Ady plans to remove the sillier aspects of the Ewoks during the battle. Less is more with them as characters.

Adding more rebels wouldn’t necessarily dilute their impact, especially if in the new footage they were mostly losing to the Empire. That’s what I would like to see, as it would make the Stormtroopers look like an actual threat before they are defeated.

I remember an early suggestion for ROTJ:R being that to sell the size of the new Death Star by not having it be the first image you see, but rather something built up to, by first showing Vader’s Star Destroyer which then gets a shadow over it, cutting to the reveal of the Death Star dwarfing the ship in scope.

This was posted long before Star Wars went to Disney, so Rogue One hadn’t done a similar idea yet. The idea could still be used here, and using Vader’s ship could make it unique.

Are you planning on replacing Artoo’s beeps? He sounds nothing in ROTJ like he does in any of the other films and it annoys the shit out of me every time I watch the movie.

THANK YOU!!! I brought this up in another thread once and was basically told I was insane and R2 sounded fine and that nothing was different from the other movies.

First post in this thread… exciting in a way, since it’s so nice to finally see the ROTJ:R thread officially exist!

My first few suggestions (of many, maybe?) is to include the turret operators in the Falcon during the big battle.

An idea I had a long time back was to have a long shot with no cuts showing the Falcon flying through the battle, shooting down Ties and such, while dodging fire from enemy ships. It would be similar in style to the intro scene of Anakin and Obi Wan entering the Coruscant battle in ROTS. This would be an epic way to showcase that Lando is a helluva pilot in his own right and that he knows that ship as well, if not better, than Han. It could end with a cut to Lando in the cockpit pointing out that the Star Destroyers aren’t firing.

I wonder if it would work better if Luke only said.

“There it is”

?

Just a small thought. Perhaps that would establish it better as a hidden strange world nameless and unchartered in the Dagobah system?

Dagobah star system…

But Obi Wan called it Dagobah by name when he came to Luke on Hoth. The name is established. It would be rather difficult to change his dialogue, and even if it could, I feel Ady would be moving away from doing a superior special edition and ESB:R would start becoming a different beast altogether, along the lines of a new fanedit.

Forgive me if I sound crazy about this, I swear I’m not lol. I remember a couple years ago watching breath smoke test for the the first few minutes of dialogue on Hoth. I thought it was a cool new effect and added a sense of coldness to Hoth. It was on Youtube. I assume it got taken down due to copyright. I was expecting when first watching ESB:R then nothing. So I was just wondering if anyone know’s why this didn’t make the cut, or maybe it was for another fan edit ? Other then that it was amazing through and through. 9 years of work defiantly paid off and it showed.

I remember that too. You’re not crazy! I too wonder why this wasn’t used, but also have no problem with it not being added. It is only because I learned that when you are in Antartica, you do NOT have a cold breath due to how dry it actually is down there, despite being surrounded by ice and snow. I just take that into consideration when thinking about which climate on Earth is most like what Hoth must be like, and then the lack of breath doesn’t bother me.

Overthinking it? Yeah, maybe I am, but it keeps me from being disappointed in the lack of the breath effect.

Is anyone keeping track of any boo-boos found so far so that Ady doesn’t have to search the whole thread?

I haven’t see it yet, but I saw some posts elsewhere that was saying the volume was going high to low in scene between Ozzel and Piett and some scenes between Leia and Han on the Millennium Falcon.

Any one else notice this, or is it b.s.?

The only thing that really bothers me at all is that Wedge’s speeder has a shadow when it first starts circling the AT-ATs legs, then in the wide shot it lacks a shadow entirely.

It is literally the only thing I have found so far (out of a meager four viewings). Other than that, it looks and sounds great on my setup.
