natedeug's The Last Jedi Polished edit V3 (FINAL) (Released)

natedeug’s The Last Jedi Polished Edition Version 3 (FINAL)

I found The Last Jedi to be a pleasant surprise. It managed to be its own movie, shucking expectations in favor of actually telling a new story while still maintaining the feeling of the originals. The problems I had with it were minor, and now that we have access to the deleted scenes, I decided to see what my personal perfect cut of the movie would look like.

I used Pilusmagnus’s Extended Edition (available over in the FanEdit.org forums) as a base, which included the following additional deleted scenes:
• Luke mourns Han, and Leia feels his pain through the Force. A shot of Leia from later in the film is used for this.
• Poe gives Finn his jacket back and boasts about saving the entire fleet before being slapped by Leia
• BB8 shows Finn a recording of Rey, prompting him to desert the ship and find her
• Additional shots of the Caretakers being angry at Rey
• New Caretaker village sequence
• New infiltration sequence aboard the Supremacy with Ralph Ineson and Tom Hardy cameos

From these additions, I was able to make the following cuts:

 • Cut the Poe/Hux exchange at the beginning
 • Cut the second doughy eyed porg when Chewie sits down for a meal
 • Reinstated the ‘Luke Has a Moment’ deleted scene (Audio transition tweaked slightly by poppasketti in V2)
 • Cut BB-8 spinning around to get Finn’s attention before showing him the recording of Rey
 • Also cut Finn thanking BB-8 for recording that moment, as a hand can be seen moving BB-8. Scene now ends on Finn’s thoughtful face looking at the transmitter, hard cut to black as he opens the locker and tries to leave.
 • Cut a bit of Maz’s communication, no more gun stroking and fawning over the codebreaker
 • Kept little casino character using BB-8 as a slot machine, but cut the belching. This is necessary because later we hear BB-8 rolling around with change in his innards.
 • Cut BB-8 being tossed out of casino
 • Cut BB-8 using coins as bullets
 • Cut a few shots of the fathier escape, trimming the time we spend with them in the casino and on the streets
 • Cut Rey asking if Ben can put on a cowl or something
 • Cut clothes iron “landing scene”, now cuts from mutiny to deleted infiltration scene
 • Infiltration scene lacks long room with Ralph Ineson following our heroes suspiciously. This removes the unfinished roof effect as well as the man moving BB-8 around. Also cut exchange between Stormtrooper and Finn in the elevator. Now Finn straightens the clothes of DJ and Rose, puts a waste basket on BB-8’s head, and the scene resumes as in the movie, on the long shelf next to the elevators with the black droid spotting them.
 • Holdo says “May the force be with you, always” without the cute back and forth
 • Trimmed the heavy, direct hinting before Snoke’s death, using musical score from TFA (courtesy of OT.com user poppasketti)
 • Cut Rose taking way too long to duck behind cover
 • Cut BB-8 controlled AT-ST running through wreckage
 • Cut Finn saying “Oh, they hate that ship!”
 • Cut second shot of porg yelling in Millennium Falcon when running through Crait’s caves
 • Cut Ben giving order to open fire on speeders and Hux’s overenthusiastic echo
 • Movie ends as in theatrical release. As much as I wanted to end on the Falcon shot and include a mid-credits broom boy, it just doesn’t work out. The ending is too fast.

Two of the above edits (Luke has a moment and the hinting before Snoke’s death) come from Hal 9000 and poppasketti.

My edit is not HD; my little laptop can only handle so much. Instead, this edit suits my needs and is of a fair quality. I’m more interested in getting these ideas out there to the community. Perhaps someone else will pick up on the little things I’ve done.

❕ An Index Of Projects & Help Thread for Star Wars Fan Edits and Other Projects... ❕
Time

Not sure if this is the appropriate thread to ask this. In the same vein of what Octorox has done with Episodes I & II (taking the best ideas from other editors such as Hal9000 and L8wrtr, and essentially making a greatest hits), I’ve a personal use edit of Episode III that combines cuts from Hal9000, L8wrtr, and Q2 along with some of my own ideas. However, I didn’t keep track of what cut came from which editor, or a cut list at all for that matter. Would this be something that the community would be interested in viewing? Or does the fact that I have no documentation kind of ruin it?

The Last Jedi : a Fan Edit Ideas thread
Time

I enjoyed the movie more on second viewing, which was a pleasant surprise. I also seem to be in the minority when I say that I loved Yoda here. Maybe he looked a little too muppety in order to invoke nostalgia, but I think this is the best he’s looked since RotJ. And his mannerisms were way more on point. He felt old and goofy again, instead of moody and slick. On the whole, I’m happy to see the series testing new waters instead of re-treading the same pool. Mixed metaphors aside, I didn’t enjoy it as much as TFA, but thought it far outshined Rogue One.

Info Wanted: The go to definitive prequel cuts?
Time

Right now my personal favorites are:

I) Octorox’s The Phantom Menace: Faster, More Intense

II) Either L8wrtr’s The Republic Divided or Octorox’s Attack of the Clones: Sanded Down

III) A personal fanedit I made combining bits from Hal9000, TM2YC, and Q2.

Hal9000 has produced probably the highest quality fan edits out there. L8wrtr has made some great narrative decisions, and Q2 has both removed a lot of time and gotten rid of Darth Vader in Episode III, which I think is an absolute must if you want to watch these things in numerical order. I was never entirely happy with any of these fan editors’ series as a whole, and was wont to pick and choose amongst them (a feeling I think most on this site share.) I began to edit together L8wrtr’s and Hal9000’s cuts and was happy with my result until I heard of Octorox’s project, which is essentially taking the best choices from Hal9000, L8wrtr and the Phantom Editor, and making a master cut. The Phantom Menace: Faster, More Intense did everything I’d done in my personal cut and a few things more. For me, it’s nearly perfect. L8wrtr and Octorox’s edits of Episode II are good for me because getting rid of as much of that movie as possible is really the best bet. And I think they’ve handled the romance the best (Octorox especially so with an unorthodox love “montage” that I think works really well.) The only thing keeping me from naming Octorox’s Sanded Down as my favorite Episode II is that the music transition after the love montage is a bit jarring and the pacing and music during the Battle of Geonosis feels a little off for reasons I can’t quite pin down. I’ve combined cuts from Hal900, TM2YC, and Q2 for Episode III. Unfortunately, I wasn’t a “good” editor and failed to keep track of which cuts come from which editors. My main concern with Episode III, which is my favourite of the PT, is removing Darth Vader, which Q2 did quite well, and while I liked the idea of keeping Padme alive, I kinda feel that her funeral with the necklace payoff is one of the more moving moments from the PT, so I wanted that. The deleted scenes showing her in meetings with Mon Mothma and Bail Organa fleshed her out a bit more and made the idea of reducing the only real female role to a plot device by killing her a little more tolerable.

I only got into this community about a year or so ago, but once you’ve watched a few edits and download lightworks, you’ll be ready to start cutting your own edits as well. (Or, hell, I don’t even know if that’s the go-to program, it was just free.)

Maybe a different angle would work better? I think having the ship pointed directly at the planet is more intimidating… possibly breaking through the clouds with TIEs coming towards them.

The effect you did is very convincing and well done but I quite prefer the other angle.

I agree. At no other point in the series are ships that are that close to planets at a perpendicular angle to the planet’s surface. This kind of establishes the ships, while that close, are affected by the planet’s gravity in such a way that they have to remain parallel.

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread

When Padme is in her queen garb and is talking in her “low formal voice” redub her with a different language that is subtitled. So essentially when she is the queen she only speaks in the “traditional Naboo dialect.” might be able to use this to change some of the politics of the TPM.

Not that this is a bad idea, but the redubbing has to stop somewhere, right? In OT, subtitles and other languages are used sparingly, but enough to immerse the viewer in the idea that this is an alien place. Now you’ve got the Neimoidians redubbed. And Jar Jar redubbed. And the Queen? Feels like a quarter of the film at that point would be making use of subtitles. Which would not be enjoyable.

When will the preview be and how can one watch it ?

Hopefully sometime next week. And I’m thinking I’ll do a private vimeo link and post the password in this thread. If not vimeo, it’ll be dropbox or something like that.

Definitely understand that it’s a preview and not the final cut. I’ve been very excited since seeing the working snippets you’ve shown so far. Especially the color correction. It looks worlds better than the color clusterf— that’s going on in Phantom.

Smithers' Prequel Fanedits (a Work In Progress)
Time

I like a lot of your ideas, particularly opening Ep1 with the escape from Naboo. If I can throw my two cents out there, I’ve got to say that the opening crawl you’re working with is a little lackluster in comparison to the really interesting things you’re planning on doing in the film proper. I think it has something to do with the phrase “time of foreboding” (I’m paraphrasing, but iirc, that’s what you had written). It’s a bit heavy handed. Like foreboding generally is something you get a sense of when you’re in a particular situation, not something that lasts long enough to call a “time.” Or even if it does last that long (say the decade in Germany prior to the rise of Hitler), putting it in that term, a time of foreboding, still feels stilted. And I don’t feel a sense of urgency from reading the rest of the crawl, either. I’m no poet, and you may not care too much for this, but I just looked back at the OT opening crawls and tried to write something that would set up your characters as they are escaping Naboo in a similar style.

After a thousand generations of peace in the galaxy, the separatist Trade Federation has thrown the might of their dreadful droid army behind an invasion of the peaceful planet Naboo.

During the turmoil, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi managed to rescue Queen Amidala, leader of the Naboo, from the clutches of the certain doom.

Pursued by the separatists, Queen Amidala races to Coruscant to plead for the support of the Galactic Republic. Unbeknownst to all, there are more sinister forces at play…

It’s essentially a mad lib plug and play of A New Hope’s crawl. But one thing that always bugged me about the PT crawls was the lack of pulpy suspense language. They’re all a bit sterile, except for Ep3’s “War!” opening. I kinda think something like this fixes that. Things like “dreadful droid army” sounds a bit kitsch, but so do all the OT crawls.

Anyway, use it, don’t use it, whatevs. I think your project looks hella promising.

Info Wanted: Episode 1 Q2/l8wrtr hybrid question
Time

After recently getting into the PT fanedits, and trying to decide which ones I like the most, I found that I prefered elements from various faneditors. My favorite three PT fanedits are those by Q2, l8wrtr, and Hal9000. In Episode I, I really liked the pacing of Q2’s and the idea of saving the Sidious reveal. But I prefered l8wrtr’s podrace, final battle, and closing shot on Palpatine at Qui-Gon’s funeral. I decided that editing the two together shouldn’t be that difficult, so I did just that.

My question is two-fold. I’d like to share the hybrid with the community, but I’m questioning how safe it is to upload it to MySpleen. (Getting caught, etc.) Further, is it kosher to upload something like this? I didn’t alter the credits to reflect both Q2 and l8wrtr’s contributions. It opens with Q2’s banner at the beginning of the movie, and l8wrtr’s credits roll at the end.

I also attempted to do some color correction, giving it a cooler, less red palette. Just FYI.

I prefer Q2’s heavily trimmed Episode II, and I am working on a Hal9000/Q2 hybrid of Episode III.

4 simple custom blu-ray and DVD covers to hold I-III, IV-VI, VII, and Bonus Materials
Time

I need to find better resources for Episode I-III concept art. I’d love to make the whole thing concept art like you suggest. If you can point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it.

I’ve tweaked it a little bit. I didn’t care for the burned Darth Vader mask on the Force Awakens cover either. And I couldn’t find very good concept art of Rey. But I did find a McQuarrie painting from around March 1975, when Lucas had temporarily changed Luke to a female lead. The other sketches of female Luke pretty obviously played a role in how they designed Rey. And in the painting you’ve got Han Solo with a Lightsaber, who reminds me a lot of bearded Luke. And of course there’s Chewie and the droids. The Death Star in the sky even looks more like Starkiller Base than the final Death Star. I think it works pretty well.

There are potato pics of how I’m storing it. Re-using the 2004 DVD set cover. And showing how I labeled the Despecialized Editions.

I’m using easily found blueprints of 1) a lightsaber 2) Han’s Pistol and 3) the Millennium Falcon as interior art for I-III, IV-VI, and VII, respectively.

If anyone can point me towards better resources for concept art from I-III and VII, I’d really appreciate it.

Thanks!
