I own the original theatrical cut on both VHS and LaserDisc. I will be doing my own preservation of it as soon as I get my new capture card. While an HD restoration would not be possible because no large versions of the non-GCI frames exist, I will at least attempt to preserve it up to a Progressive DVD format (MPEG-2 DVD, 23.976fps Progressive)
Here are all the versions I own and will use:
• Japan Theatrical LaserDisc, ShoPro (main source)
• Japan Theatrical VHS, ShoPro (may be required to fill the Side A > Side B transition on LaserDisc)
• Japan Kanzenban VHS (TV Tokyo print with Ash’s Journey intro), ShoPro (reference only)
• Japan Kanzenban DVD (DVD print without AJ intro), ShoPro (for Japanese DD 5.1 track, Japanese DD 2.0 track, and reference)
• US DVD, Warner Bros. (for reference and for English audio & subtitles)
• Japan Blu-Ray from Pikachu The Movie Premium Box Set, ShoPro (may use Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track)
• 2016 US Blu-Ray, Viz Media (Cartoon Network remaster, English audio contains fixed errors such as wrong Pokemon names, may use audio as a bonus)
• Ryuu-Rogue fansubs (for Japanese audio)
