Have you tried downloading DaVinci Resolve Light?  It can run on some low cost gaming cards.  You will need an accurate color monitor for reference.  That's the expensive part of the system.

An OLED Flanders Scientific is one of the best.  Ideally you have a K-10 probe and something like CalMan or Lightspace to align or calibrate it.  The probe is just as expensive as the monitor but you can rent them. 

But for practicing you can work off an aligned LCD using a lower cost probe.

If you are good at reading the scopes and you can get access to a proper monitor even for a short time you can probably do some stellar work on a lower cost system.

That opening shot looks nice blue but then the Tauntaun goes green.  You can't win with these old prints.

Why did they scan it at 2k/4k if you already did the scans though?

-1 Has been holding on us this whole time!  I wish I had the time to make a film.  I'd love to interview you guys behind the scenes.  Is team -1 cool with you using their scans?  The film needs some drama.

Very interesting.  Do the programmers have any interest in creating an open source version of their software for the general public?

It's amazing that these tools can now be developed.  A shame film isn't being used as much.  But there are many many films that need this type of TLC that could benefit from using these advances.

Getting Empire and Jedi finished this way would be great but I doubt Disney will care.  But who knows.  They would make a lot of money putting out an alternate fan version. 

Where do you find time for this?

How long does it take to work on the average shot?  Have you loaded in all the film scans you have an then pick and choose your tools in one piece of custom made software to repair a sing shot?

Will the people that helped to develop these tools eventually sell this software to the public?

We all do this for our own reasons, mine are different to Mike's and different to the -1 teams, and probably different to Harmy's and Adywan's and everyone else's motivations. But we all love this stupid film, and spend insane amounts of time and money on it. I sometimes have no idea why, but then I remember sitting in that cinema in 1977 and just being removed from this world for 2 hours, and it all makes sense to me again, and I go back to my control surface and get on with things.

Why not share the scans of the LPP with them?  Or was it not their print when you got it?

Are you keeping the grain in the film?  Maybe just reducing the grain in the opticals?  I'm guessing the Reliance version will be very grain free.

Very nice. It's hard to tell but is the noise reduction softening/burring the smoke a lot?

Disney should put out a Bluray set of fan films and restorations.

Did the empire show up?

Ha. Yes, exactly, fairy tales get pretty dark. Hansel and Gretel anyone?  Grimm's Fairy Tales?  I guess it all depends on what someone's definition is for themselves. I don't think the prequels got dark enough. Jedi's were meant to be hunted down and murdered by Vader. That is pretty dark to me. Sex, swearing? No. That's tacky. We don't need that unless it's true to the character. The dark I'm talking about is like an honesty with the characters. Pixar movies can get dark. Disney movies like the new one Big Hero Six has the parents die in the first 15 minutes can get dark.

But yeah it all just comes down to some good honest storytelling. A lot of bad stories are made just because they are rushed into production. So many movies are not ready to be made. Lucas was in a position where nobody thought he would be successful so he had to make the best movie he could. The whole idea he could fail helps make Empire. He knows he can't pull this shit off so he brings in help. Then later he tries to come back and make the movies himself where even if he sucks he still makes money!  

So maybe my title is wrong for this thread. Maybe we don't make multi age Star Wars movies. We make really honest movies about really bad and good people and everyone else that falls in between.
