The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

Ive just watched TLJ on dvd today. I didn’t see it in the theater (because reasons). So today was the first time I saw it.

I have very mixed feelings about it. But with the end of the skywalkers episode 9 has come early for me.

I really don’t care what happens to the crew of the falcon enough to actually see an episode 9.

I’m out.

Lucasfilm Creates A 4K Ultra-HD Restoration of the Original 'Star Wars' - Gareth Edwards
Time

Don’t know if I’m the first to spot this or not. Apologies if I’m not.

https://entertainment.slashdot.org/story/17/01/01/1942213/lucasfilm-creates-a-4k-ultra-hd-restoration-of-the-original-star-wars?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Slashdot%2Fslashdot+(Slashdot)

Mod Edit: the above information is taken from the ‘Gareth Edwards: The Last Detail’ 2016 article from 'Little White Lies

Interviewer: “When you went back and watched the original films did you take copious notes?”

Gareth Edwards: “On day one, we were in Lucasfilm in San Francisco with Industrial Light and Magic and John Knoll, our supervisor, he said that they’ve got a brand new 4K restoration print of A New Hope – it had literally just been finished. He suggested we sit and watch it. Obviously, I was up for that. Me, the writer, lots of the story people and John all sat down, we all had our little notepads, we were all ready for this. I’ll add that I’ve seen A New Hope hundreds of times. So I was sat there, ready to take notes and really delve under the surface of the film. You have the Fox fanfare, then scrolling text with ‘A long time ago…’, and then the main music begins. Next thing we knew it had ended, and we looked around to one another and just thought – shit, we didn’t take any notes. You can’t watch it without getting carried away. It’s really hard to get into an analytical filmmaker headspace with this film. It just turns you into a child.”

So here I am in the spoiler thread, without having seen the movie. Why? I’ve decided I’m not going to watch it at all, ever. Or any spin off. I think I’m just “getting too old for this sort of thing.” I saw ANH in the cinema in 1977. I hope the movie is a success though. I will be watching the main releases. I just hope these spin offs don’t dilute the main movies for folk.

May I ask how old you are? I’m 43 and I really enjoyed it. It didn’t dilute anything, if anything it enhanced the OT.

I’m 47. But jaded, obviously! I know somebody in real life who enjoyed it too, so maybe I’ll watch it on blu ray. We’ll see…

At the end of the training remote session with Luke talking to Ben, what are the green ovals in the top right with white scribbled lines for?, in the last sentance or so before you cut to the Death Star board room

I think those are just reel change markers. It’s something we no longer see in digital projection, or on home video, but would definitely be present in 1977. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cue_mark for more info.

Hope that helps. 😃

Or you can watch this scene from TV’s “Columbo” …

…when the detective gets a crash course in reel changes. This is where I learned what that bright colored oval flashes were. 😃

Woa. That brought me out of lurking. That’s exactly where I learned it too.

Pity me. I still have a HLD-X9 laserdisc player.
Time

Today I watched rotj definitive collection laserdisc on my hldx9. It’s currently hooked up to a very old crt tv though.

I couldn’t enjoy it because of the lack of detail which Harmy has now spoiled us with.

I paid a lot for it, so I’m not about to get rid of it.

I just wondered if anybody uses laserdisc anymore and has used it with e.g. an upscaler on a hdtv. How would it hold up to harmy’s efforts?

Disney Acquires LucasFilm for $4.05 billion, Episode 7 in 2015, 8 and 9 to Follow, New Film Every 2-3 Years
Time

When you say that you wouldnt be able to accept anyone else playing han, luke, leia can i remind you that youre probably like me: OLD

Do you think Disney cares about that demographic? Seriously? Its nothing too do with us anymore. It's basically a reboot for the next generation of kids. We've been told goodbye as an audience.

Tales of woe at which the reader is permitted to laugh
Time

I think it was Oscar Wilde who once said "There is nothing more cheerful than listening to a tale of woe at which the listener is permitted to laugh"

So as we could all do with some cheering up from time to time, I'll kick off the tales of woe while giving you permission to laugh with this:

I was invited to the wedding of the girl I always secretly wanted to marry.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Is there a list of how many SE changes that Harmy has corrected? 005 seems to have the defintive list of actual changes here

http://picasaweb.google.com/doubleofive/StarWarsSpecialEditionChangesHD

The only reason I ask is that Harmy has said he'd prefer not to have to do a v3.0, so I'm wondering if there's a checklist of 005 items that have been corrected.

RSS feed would increase pageviews
Time

Currently I can only subscribe to a thread and get email alerts , but as the mobile phone generation likes to use RSS feeds it would be nice to have an RSS feed which gave e.g. the last 20 comments spread over all the threads on every forum. This would also increase your pageviews for ads because I'm sure there are comments people would view if only they knew they had been posted.

Idea: GOUT V3 and DVDO ISCAN upscaler/processor?
Time

I don't own a ps3 but apparently (according to a website i just came across) it has an upscaler hidden in it's configuration settings somewhere. Has anyone checked out the results this gives? I assume the DVDO EDGE will kick it's **s. But while we're waiting for some screenshot and/or clips from the DVDO EDGE , it would be interesting to see the results the PS3 gives.
