4K restoration on Star Wars

^^Blade runner style release sounds somewhat likely to me. Disney did pay 4 BILLION dollars. They are known for making excellent digital negatives out of all their movies (even if the releases don't always reflect it) So most likely they wanted a digital negative of the OOT as well now they own it. (and the '97 and '04 release)

Do they own it though? It was my understanding that Fox still owns the original movie. Disney bought Lucasfilm and the rights to all sequels, new prequels, reboots and spin offs to Star Wars and Indiana Jones, but I don't think they own the original films.

20th Century Fox controls all theatrical and home video distribution of both Star Wars Trilogies, and they own A New Hope in perpetuity.

For 4 billion dollars? Eh, Disney will work out a deal with Fox on the side ;)

I mean Disney wants to market their new movies, they need the first movie to hype it up, sure they can spend some extra cash to restore it and strike a deal with Fox for distribution. (Especially since Disney would be doing all the work)

I recon an interpositive (one removed from the negative if I got my terminology right) Should still be pretty sharp and detailed enough to splice into the footage to make a reasonable OOT release. (correct me if wrong)

I fear most likely they'll just use the recomposited shots wherever they can though and only scan/clean older footage that was cut out of the '97 release. (seems like the cheapest way to do it)

Think about it. They'd have to redo all the effects done for the 2004 edition like the updated jabba. (well they could do it crappily I suppose...wouldn't be the first time) But also they'll piss off:

This is not true. The O-negs of the films are still conformed to the 97 theatrical versions. All post 97 changes were done to the 2k digital master. If they did a new scan of the O-Neg it would be the 97 version. From there, if they wanted to restore the OOT theyd have to scan IP prints or the cut pieces of the O-Neg and reedit them back into the film. If they wanted to recreate the 2004 or 2011 version in 4K, they'd have to rerender all the post 97 effects at a higher resolution and reinsert them into the film.

Thats what I was trying to say with "they'd have to redo all the effects done for the 2004 edition like the updated jabba" though. I realise that a new scan would be the '97 edition. I was merely pointing out I'd doubt they'd regress back to it (since it's outdated), but I also don't think they'd want to update the effects updated for 2004 AGAIN.

I really hope they do the original version. In fact I have my doubts wether or not they'll regress back to the '97 version.

Think about it. They'd have to redo all the effects done for the 2004 edition like the updated jabba. (well they could do it crappily I suppose...wouldn't be the first time) But also they'll piss off:

Fans of the 2004 version of the SE.
Fans of the OOT

Pretty much the only people who'd win are the select few who specifically like the '97 version.

I wouldn't be suprised if we get the original cut, but most likely with recomposited effects from the '97 edition.

Team Negative1 - The Empire Strikes Back 1980 - 35mm Theatrical Version (Released)

I agree with the sentiment it should be available in highest quality. Even though not everyone will be able to enjoy it because of crappy internet connections, its stil a preservation project and as such we need to get some copies of the highest quality into as many hands as possible. (that way the high quality copies can't be "lost" in time)

Of course a lower quality version is also needed for those not blessed with awesome internet connections.

Here is a previously posted partial comparison, between the Bluray (Top), and our cleaned and stabilized version on the Bottom:

Note the many missing frames from the Bluray, and the overly bright color correction.

While there is more detail there, this does not seem to match up with what would have been projected in theaters.

Ah finally, remember me saying that a certain project looked kinda yellowish in the desert scenes in the Indiana Jones thread? :P (granted its not the exact same kind of yellow, but skintones definitely take a more "golden" hue)

Before on the blog, they would have videos showing different parts of their project. There was the opening credits, the entrance to Mos Eisley, etc. they had a counter of how much footage per reel they had cleaned up. This is far from being 1) a hoax and 2) a private venture a la Mike Verta.
Is there any way I could see these samples?

I have them on my computer, but I don't want to post them without the team's permission.

Maybe they are like M.V. and will never release it?  Or maybe they just like taking pictures of prints they buy.  I have been going through the forums and wow this has been going on for a long time.  It's either fake or these guys have real, real dedication.  I applaud them.  If it comes out I'm sure it will be awesome.

FWIW, I'm privy to enough "behind the scenes" stuff to convince me that this effort is 100% real.

Since I was lucky enough to be invited enough to the blog, I can also confirm that at the very least they like taking videos of their private prints :P

I'm 100% convinced it's real, you people need to lighten up :P

I recall team negative saying that they also tried stabilizing film using the sprocket holes, but this did not work perfectly due to the film actually having some gate weave of its own IN the film. Might be a similair case.

...but two mastering houses scanned the OCN and they came back with the same result independently, that cannot be just a coincidence

And the argument that the teal and yellow tones are some new sort of coloring is not quite accurate either, but this simply brings me to post this link, as it was already argued to death there, which is why I stayed away from this debate here, but I just couldn't do it any longer :-)

I also mentioned in that thread that the desert scenes in a certain movie we all know very well. Seem to have a similair orange tint in desert scenes. At least on certain scans.
