SW Episode III - Reign of the Dark Side (* unfinished project *)

WOW!

Unexpected... really unexpected...

Honestly,  I don't know what to say about the Phantom Menace clip. At this point, I think everyone's waiting for drastic, mind-blowing changes. But that intro is sort of kind of what we've already seen before [in other fan-edits].

Not that it isn't good, or hell of a lot better than what we originally got, it just doesn't seem radical and exciting enough. You know, like the stuff you did with ROTS?

But this is still awesome news! I'm excited as hell!

Good luck, man!

Info Wanted: How to cut unimportant stuff and still make sense?
Time

It's actually rather simple.

What you do is - right after Vader orders his men to scout the absolute shit out of everything - you cut to this very first shot of them in the desert:

Cut out all the arguments and them splitting up. Just right away have C3PO noticing the sandcrawler and insert the line "It's transport!... Over Here!" from this scene:

... into another shot where the background doesn't cause continuity errors (or you can simply try and paint it out).

Then cut to the scene where StormTroopers are raiding the desert:

And then go right to this shot of the sandcrawler:

... followed by C3PO saying "It stopped!" and trying to wake R2 up & shit:

And that's it. You remove all the arguments, them splitting up, R2 getting abducted... saves you a lot of time. The only thing that might be a tad too convenient is the fact that it all - them crashing in the desert, getting bought by Luke - happens in one day.

Other than that - you just have to do some editing magic and it's all done.

Good luck.

Haven't visited these boards in over a year now, but with TPM in theaters again, I finally got round to (trying to) edit the space battle at the end of TPM.

I always liked the design of TPM (not that there was anything else to like), especially the Naboo starfighters (visually and audibly) and the "Death Saturn" (as I like to call it).
By all logic, that space battle should have been awesome, but I have only seen it once or twice as I really just can't stand the way it plays out.

This was an attempt (more a proof of concept) to see if the battle itself could be made a bit more enjoyable (aka make Anakin a bit less useless/annoying)

Biggest changes:
- Anakin flying a starfighter is now part of the plan
- Anakin no longer arrives late to the battle
- Anakin knows how to fly
- Anakin _decides_ to take out the generator (instead of doing it all by accident)

Don't pay too much attention to the audio; it's a rough cut, and I'm not an editor, so I do mean ROUGH...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWNFfFLnESM

Love it. Although there are a few things I would do slightly differently.

- Anakin flying a starfighter is NOT part of the plan, but he decides he wants to do it, and proves himself to be an exceptional pilot in the end. After all, he is the best starpilot in the galaxy.

- I'd take out the "This is tense!" and the "Aaaaaaaaah!" lines.

Actually, Anakin being part of the plan is genius. Shows how much faith Qui-Gon has in the kid, and makes his actions less suicidal.

Nah, man. I think it should be Anakin's decision. It makes more sense and makes the scene more intense. Cause you don't know what's gonna happen, what that kid has gotten himself into. If it's already pre-seen and predicted by Qui-Gon then the tension is lost cause we know for a fact that that old dude knows what's up.

That's what I think, anyways.

But either way, this is an awesome edit. A serious improvement over the original!

Kudos!

Idea & Info: Reshooting Ideas

First, you need someone who's willing enough to redo prequels. Then that person must get his/her story straight and make up a list of scenes and shots that he/she has problems with and let the fans start coming up with alternatives and scene suggestions.

Cause sitting around and just making scenes up without any sort of direction is basically what we already have - The Prequel Radical Redux Thread.

It may have 240+ pages of posts that a lot of people think no one will ever read, but if someone truly decided to fix Prequels - that someone wouldn't have a problem reading through all of them.

So, there's no need to make more threads and scatter our ideas.

Just my opinion.

Hey, dudes!

I think I've just come up with an enormous problem solver!

Yesterday I started watching NightStalkerPoet's "The Phantom Hour" and simply couldn't get through it. But not because the editing was bad, but because I've seen that film so many times (in an edited form, of course) that it just felt unbearable.

So I opened the film using VLC player end sped it up by 1.10x... and HOLY DOG SMOKES was that an enormous fudging imrovement!

The whole thing flew perfectly! Amidala's voice didn't sound half as annoying and all those boring static shots became ALIVE! You could just feel the camera moving and stuff happening.

Sure, the even more fast-paced lightsaber shots made me puke my ass off, but other than that - it was exciting as hell! Cause it didn't make it seem like a Benny Hill parody, it literally made the film flow as fast as it should've originally. The fact that it was cut down to 70min also helped.

I dare you dudes to give this method a shot. I dare you!

I just cannot stress this enough - all this time we've been messing around with cutting crap out when all it needed really was just speed.

Seriously - check it out, let me know what you think.

That being said, I think the best thing to do is throw some ideas out there and see what people think.  Normally throwing out ideas will get more feedback because more people will read brief ideas that a finished script, and people are probably more up for chatting about an idea than ripping apart a script you spent a lot of time on, so yeah, share some ideas and I'm sure people will join in.

True.

The only problem, though, is that some of the cool ideas tend to come up in other people's work... which can be quite depressing for the person who came up with them first.

But since this isn't that big of a community and everyone's basically striving for the same thing (an awesome, new take on the prequel trilogy) and enjoys sharing ideas, I think it's safe enough to post at least those ideas that you're not that sure about.

My only question is - what is your ultimate goal: a book, a comic-book, graphic novel... cartoon? What's the final format you're aiming for?

Yeah, I saw that 3D Vader mannequin. Truly impressive...

BTW, I'm sorry if I come off as overly fanatic (every post I've made so far is just me yelling how awesome everything is), but, you know, I was already excited when I read the cut-list for this. XD And now - after all these cool suggestions and new visual effects ideas... I just cannot wait for this one to come out!

In my opinion this scene is far superior to the shortened version in the movie. "... you saved my life..." Wow. So much more powerful. Something to consider for edits.

Damn... there are quite a lot of deleted scenes on that guy's channel. It's interesting to see what got cut out - what wasn't good enough even for the prequels.

Here's hoping there's some stuff that will come in handy for fan-editors.

I'm all for dubbing aliens and Jar-Jars in the prequels, but I really don't think that alien languages is the answer.  Cause alien languages mean subtitles. And subtitles mean bunch of jibberish that puts you out of the film.

*facepalm*

I was talking about them talking jibberish. Not subtitles being bad. I mean, like, if they said "Zapper papper? Maba baba waba zaba!" and then a phrase "Are you brain-dead? I'm not going in there with two jedi!" would appear in a subtitle form.

Wouldn't that take you out of the film? The fact that you have to listen to jibberish and read subtitles instead of just seeing them talk and interact with each other?

I mean, seriously, Jor-El spoke English on Krypton and no one complained. Odin and Thor both spoke English in Asgard and no one complained...

Besides, those prequel movies are already cold, inhuman, fake and unrelatable-looking - so, why add an unintelligible language and alienate, say, Nemodians even more?

MagnoliaFan did an outstanding job dubbing Jar-Jar (in that YouTube video). And, personally, I think that's the way to go.
